ESPN Reports Rashan Gary to Start Own Sports Agency

ESPN article on Rashan Gary Sports Agency.  Rashan decided to change the economic model of sports agency to reduce the agent burden.  His Mom, a licensed agent and a marketing employee seem to be involved.  He has signed one other athlete besides himself.  Go Rashan.

This article provides a lot more color and detail than the press release in December. Gil Brandt comes of as a real prick in the article, seriously fuck him.

Wasn’t there a professor/program at Michigan that was a big deal in the Hand recruitment that was focused on Sports Marketing/Management?

It makes for a real nice recruiting pitch when a kid chooses Michigan for the academics and it actually benefits them. Really rooting for the success of his agency.

Truly wish Gary the best in his journey and a long, successful career in the NFL. However, being a Wolverine fan from Ohio, his Michigan legacy will always be a 0-3 record against Ohio State. Just a shame he and those teams couldn’t finish the job in those games!

Best of luck to Rashan, hope it works out for him!

Was wondering about the rules (if any) of professional athletes having equity in a sports agency. Obviously, it appears it is allowed in the NFL if Rashan has gone this far. To me it seems like a bit of a slippery slope. In theory couldn't you funnel additional compensation to players under the guise of a "marketing deal" to incentive a free agent to join the active player/agency owner's team? Ex. Player X (Member of Team A) has a majority equity stake in agency, Player Y is offered a 4 year maximum contract from Team A & Team B. Player Y is incentivized to join Team A because he knows that he will get a $5 million marketing deal from Player X's agency.

One high profile instance was the NBA investigating Lebron and a potential equity stake in Klutch Sports (Run by his longtime friend Rich Paul). Perhaps there is a *wink wink* agreement that LeBron takes a stake when he retires from basketball. So the NBA prohibits agency ownership but apparently the NFL does not?

Again, I am fairly certain Rashan + Ms. Coney have done research into it and I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit. Does anybody have any additional insight on the topic?
