What would you change about college football?

If you were in charge of college football what would you change?

I would start with scheduling. Each team must play the same amount of conference games; preferably 9.

All non-conference games must be played before conference play starts. No more Bama vs The Citadel in late November.

I would like to see the Playoff expanded to 8 teams. First round games should be played on campus of the teams ranked 1-4. Would make the regular season just as important and meaningful as it is now.

My teams would include the Power 5 conference champions, the highest rated group of 5 team and 2 at-large bids.

In non-playoff bowl games, I would make sure there are no rematches from at least 2-3 years. Nobody wants to see UM/UF for the 100th time. This would prevent the Bowls from getting stale and would guarantee new matchups every year.

Targeting needs revamped. I would say if you are called for targeting and the replay confirms it, there is just a 15 yard penalty. If you commit another targeting, then you will be ejected but not suspended for half of the next game. I would only suspend a player if they accumulate more than 3 targeting penalties.

Clock should not stop after a 1st down until the final 2 minutes of each half. A player should not be called down if he slips/falls unless he has been touched; like the NFL.

Referees need more accountability. I would like to see some sort of grading system made public and only the highest graded ones should ref the big games-playoff, NY6 Bowls, and rivalry games like Mich/OSU and Aub/Bama.

I know it’s all about money, but the amount of commercials is insane, especially on Fox.

Also, i would find a way to bring back the NCAA video game. This doesn’t have much to do with this post, but damnit, I miss the game and I am bored at work.

Im sure I missed some stuff, but just curious to see what your perfect college football world would like.

I’d like to see the BTN east and west realigned. The idea of Northwestern playing for the BTN championship pisses me off greatly. I hope OSU beats them 100-0 so Delaney gets off his ass and does something. We might go to Pasadena in that case. MSU should trade places with Purdue.

I've been trying to wrap my head around a realignment that isn't the Leaders and Legends debacle, but balancing the divisions seems difficult doing it based on geography. North/South might work, depending on where and how crooked you draw the line. The best I can do is:

B1G North: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue

B1G South: Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State

That seems to balance 3-4 traditionally strong schools in each division (bold), but the weaklings all sit in the South now. If anyone can improve upon this, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Your 1st suggestion is fine and I agree on couple others.

I like 16 teams for playoff with no more CCG's (I know that aint happenin anytime soon).  BCS type ranking where the polls and computers determine it - top 8 seeds get home games week after reg. season sched. ends.  That leaves 8 teams standing - use traditional 4 big bowls for these games + add 1 to be the host for the two weeks following for the championship rotationally.  This adds all of ONE game to what we have now.  The 8 teams that lose in the first week games will all get to go to pretty decent bowls - Gator, Citrus, Holliday, Peach, etc.  So this year that would look like - 16. WVU @ 1. Bama, 15. UK @ 2. Clem, 14. UT @ 3. ND, 13. WSU @ 4. UGA, 12. PSU @ 5. OU, 11. UW @ 6. OSU, 10. LSU @ 7. UM, 9. UF @ 8.UCF.

So that is 2 SEC home games, 2 ACC home games (ND yes), 2 B1G home games, 1 Big12, and 1 AAC home game.  Teams have to share PORTION of their extra home game with conf.  Conferences should be rewarded for having more teams.  TV rights to games need to be spread evenly.  In this scenario you have 5 SEC teams, 3 B1G teams, 3 Big12, 2 ACC, 2 PAC12, 1 AAC.

CFB used to have the BEST replay system.  It may have even been the 1st?  Now I feel like it's the worst.  I remember it was fast.  (Hockey may have had the puck over the goal line replay in place for a while before)  Having refs stand on a sideline staring at a tiny monitor is beyond idiotic.  I don't care if they are describing what they saw to replay officials in a booth.  What we see on camera is what we see and considering we have multiple angles usually the refs opinion of what he saw is moot.  That being said - penalties need to be reviewed.  There needs to be a time limit on all reviews but they need to be made impartially by say 9 people not even on site in a matter of 30 seconds with the video available.  Click a button and majority rule.

Targeting is a debate forever.  I thought Metellus' targeting was actually legit because he stuck out his forearm and you could imply some intent from that.  Hudsons from the next week was Ree Dick.  There have been many crazy ones since the rule was implemented.  If a ball carrier lowers their head at the last moment and a defender has already committed and their helmets hit - I don't get it.

There should be a commercial break after a score, after a change of possession, ONE extended timeout per half, and at the end of quarters.   Commercial - kickoff - touchback - commercial, should get TV execs hospitalized pummeling's.

I like the clock stoppage on 1st's.  Like a couple of the variances between CFB & Pros.  Might bring back the if he woulda came down in bounds receiver it is a catch - that would be part of the review described above.

Everyone is talking about the playoff, so...

1.  Clock does not stop on first downs, unless the runner goes out of bounds (and in that case, only in the last 2 minutes of each half).  I love college football, but I'm sorry, 40 seconds from your own 25 should not seem like an eternity.  If that reduces some scoring, especially late in halves and games, and speeds up the game, ok.

2.  PI is a spot foul instead of 15 yards.

3.  Any pass caught behind the line of scrimmage is counted as rushing yards (I actually do not care much about this, but it is annoying when you see a QB credited with a touchdown pass when they tap the snap to the receiver in motion who then runs 80 yards for a score).

4.  Give the lineman more leeway downfield before calling illegal man downfield.

5.  Fix/stop/actually call the pick plays.

#1 the college rule is fine (better) about stopping the clock temporarily on first downs (to move the sticks), out of bounds,

The games have gone over three hours because: more commercials; halftimes extended to 20 minutes; replays; longer injury time outs; and on of the largest factors rarely mentioned, more passing means more incomplete passes means much more stopping the clock.
So treat incomplete passes like out of bounds plays and first downs- get the ball, and start the clock when the ball is set. (I'd make it stop until snap the last 3 minutes of the half instead of two)

#2 or maybe spot foul plus 5 yards (and automatic first down) for anything under 15 yards. But there also has to be a maximum,

#3 while you're a it, maybe fix the negative sack yardage counting against run totals?

#4 is a bad idea, making the situation worse. More offense is fun, but not when it comes because the defense has no way of telling a pass from a run.

#5 I agree

8 team playoff

two feet in bounds for pass receptions

FCS wins don’t count on your record

no fair catch on kickoffs

refs for rival games must be out of state for both teams and have no school affiliation

Athletic directors cannot contact a coach until his season, including post season, is complete. Keep coaching staff intact through bowl games. Push back national signing day by a month to make up the time for coach change craziness.

Change targeting rule. Penalties accumulate throughout the season. Just a 15 yarder for the first of the season. Second of the season, out for a game. Third, out for 1.5. Fourth, out for 2. Etc. Targeting can genuinely be accidental but if a player is doing it multiple times throughout the season, something is wrong.

Have a grad scholarship program. Graduates who played for 4 years and graduate with a 3.5 or higher can apply to the NCAA for grad school funding. Alma Mater must pay for grad school if approved. Encourage continuing education. Universities make so much off these players, it is a reasonable way to give back.

Fewer commercial breaks. Increase cost per commercial.

Let the players unionize. Negotiate for image rights, etc. that go into a collective pool for all scholarship players to cover long-term health insurance, advanced education, etc.

Schools sign each player to a standardized 5-year contract that includes an education scholarship and a reasonable stipend (the total value of which is not less than a full-time job, which it is). A player gets injured, he's covered. The NFL want him to come out early? They negotiate with the school to buy the rights to his contract, and then negotiate with him directly for the big payday.

The clock does not stop when a player is tackled in the field of play, why should it stop for an incomplete pass in the field of play?

The game takes too long, and as more teams go with passing offenses this is really dragging it out.

I would change the rule to not stop the clock for an incomplete pass in the field of play.  Let it run.

I would keep the clock stopping for a first down.  I would also let the clock stop on an incomplete pass that goes out of bounds.  These two things are enough to allow clock management at the end of the game, to preserve the exciting last-second finishes we are used to.

I would very much like school football leagues to allow betting. I place bets on the site https://1xbet-gh.net for a very long time. Not always winning bets, this is understandable. But the odds are always off the scale!
