Tips for East Lansing?

Submitted by CTSgoblue on October 16th, 2018 at 4:59 PM

The mgowife and I will be heading up to East Lansing this weekend and we've never been to a football game up there.  The wife is pretty leery based on a prior bad experience at OSU several years back.  Would appreciate any tips from the folks that are more experienced...

**How bad is traffic in EL on game day?

**Any tips on where to park / where not to park?

**How bad are the fans on the walk to/from stadium? At the stadium?

**Our seats are Sec 120...bad? Terrible? Awful?

**Any other piece of advice?

How bad is traffic from AA to EL usually? Planning to drive to the game Saturday morning, and I'm just wondering what time I should leave to beat the rush. After I get verbally and physically assaulted, black out and pass out in a ditch I'll probably just stay the night..so no worries about after game traffic.

That or get off 96 in either Williamston or Webberville.  Straight shot down Grand River and It really isn't more than a few minutes longer when there is no traffic.  There is a shuttke run out if Hannah Plaza by Pizza House I believe.  It is free and drops off right by the stadium.  A few other places run shuttles but the Roadhouse one charges $5 I think.

1. Take 6 (full) cans of Axe Body spray.

2. Lock yourself in the bathroom and spray every last drop from those cans.

3.  Wear whatever you want, they won't notice you.  You could wear a maize tuxedo and your scent will camouflage you. They're like Jurassic Park dinosaurs, but instead of only sensing movement, they only sense non-Bros.

4. Profit.

I live in Lansing and wear my Michigan gear everywhere. The town is probably 30%+ Michigan fans so it's not completely one-sided. Park in the commuter lot where you can tailgate and there are regular shuttle buses to and from the stadium. MSU fans are nowhere near the insanity level of Bucknuts. You won't get harassed in any major way walking around. I was there in 2016 and they were pretty down the whole game. Hopefully we get a lead early and they will be quiet. I wish they had lost to PSU so more would have sold their tickets to Michigan fans.

I’ll be there as well with my buddy in 120.  A couple of things:

96 can be a bit of a nightmare coming in from Metro Detroit if you’re coming from that direction.  If that’s the case, hop off in Williamston and take Grand River in.

If you don’t have a pass, there are a few pay lots to park and walk, but if you’re going to walk anyway I’d suggest going to park at Frandor Shopping Center (usually free).

This will be my 3rd UofM @ MSU game and I rarely get much more than some good natured ribbing (all kidding aside).  I avoid the students.  The only time I’ve remotely had an issue was when I pet some guys dog and he was hammered and told me not to touch his dog because I was a Michigan fan.

As I mentioned, I’m in 120 also.  It’s a little smaller stadium so it isn’t the total nose bleeds, but it is pretty far down the sideline.  Being higher up will help the sight lines.  The upshot is you’re on the side of the stadium that was upgraded.  The other side is a death trap.

I’d recommend keeping an open mind overall.  If you’re looking for a dive before the game, try getting into Crunchies for some burgers and beers.  It is small and there is usually a line so arrive early.

Lastly, my MSU fan wife tells me there are pat downs to get in (that’s new).  Apparently, being pregnant (which she is) doesn’t exempt you either.

Traffic isn’t terrible if you get in there early enough.  Like most places, 10% of the fan base can make it miserable but most of them are fine.  I’ve had good luck parking at the Islamic center on Harrison, close to Breslin and it’s an easy out from there after the game.  Good luck.

East Lansing is to Columbus as Winnie the Pooh is to a rabid grizzly. Run into confrontational MSU fans? In the words of Crash Davis, "They're kids. scare 'em."

As for where to park, the Hannah Center on Hagadorn North of Mt. Hope and South of Grand River. Lots of good restaurants, free parking, then a free (plus tip to the driver) Pizza House shuttle to and from Spartan Penitentiary.

Another excellent option that surprisingly few consider is to park at one of the half-dozen ramps in downtown EL, then walk through campus to the stadium. If weather is good, it's not a bad hike, and all of the downtown EL bars and restaurants are there for celebrating and gloating after the win.

I sat with friends for the 2016 Michigan vs MSU game in the MSU student section.

* Traffic on game day - not bad. Taking the highway from AA to EL is easy and we didn't run into any traffic until we got off the highway.

* Are the fans bad? Not really. Large groups sometimes heckle you as you walk to the stadium, but I experienced nothing more. In the stadium was a bit different. The people around me in the first quarter would boo at me whenever I cheered. Granted, I was in the student section. They stopped pretty quickly though, and overall I had a good time (plus the W)

* I would say section 120 is probably fine. That's about where I was in the student section. If your seat is closer to the front, I think you'll enjoy it

I parked at “Municipal Park” in 2016. It’s on the northeast corner of Clippert and Kalamazoo. It’s about 3/4 mile west of Breslin. It’s free and easy to get in and out.

For food I recommend Deluca’s. It’s on the other side of town but you probably won’t have to wait for a table.

Sec 120 is ok if you are low enough. In my experience, MSU fans are a little better than OSU. They’re MUCH better if they lose than if they win. Or maybe I just tolerate them better after a Michigan win.
