Marcus Ray Takes More Shots at Michigan

Submitted by Clancy's Hands on October 5th, 2018 at 6:01 PM

Marcus Ray took yet more shots at Michigan football yesterday on "The Spartan Beat With Rico Beard" radio show (it can be found on iTunes - it begins at @ the 1:17:20 mark). Among the lowlights:

"Ohio State is about getting stops. I think Michigan is more about getting stats....when you can't win championships like Michigan can't, then you have to hang your hat on something else."

"[Michigan says] we got the number one defense in the world. Against who?"

"Northwestern should have blown Michigan out."

"Michigan's problem is that they out-athlete the bad teams and get out-coached against the good teams."

After trashing Michigan fans, he claims that he "dropped the mic in Ann Arbor" because he would rather talk to Rico Beard of The Spartan Beat.

"Michigan fans are trapped in this twilight zone of 'even when we stink, we smell good'."

Marcus Ray is about 40 years old and obese. Sure sometimes obebe people become fit. But more often they stay far forever or go up and down in weight. If you let yourself become obese at any point you likely have a problem.

You're quoting third down defense from last year? You're a bigger idiot than I thought. UM finished 1st in opp 3rd down conversion rate in each of Don Brown's first two years. Were 3rd downs in the OSU and ND game you mentioned ugly? Sure. So. Carolina was 2/14 on 3rd down and Wisconsin was 5/15. FOH troll.

Why do you still troll this site Michwolve21? All you ever do is criticize Michigan football in every way - coaches, players and fans. If you actually consider yourself a Michigan "fan", here's a newsflash - you're not one.

Yep you’re right - UM should have included a mandatory provision in all coaching contracts that all 3rd and long situations must result in the defense immediately leaving the field.  Eventually we’ll find the perfect HC and defensive coordinator combo - still a work in progress.  Courage....

More proof that Fatty Ray doesn't know crap. You make a state like Northwestern should have blown them out you better have some data to back that up.

All this because Harbaugh kicked him out of practice?

Why was Northwestern supposed to have blown us out? That one doesn't make much sense.

I don't understand why he has to keep talking. Out of one side of his mouth he says how much he loves Michigan, and then he goes into enemy territory and rips the entire program and fanbase? Marcus, you were a Michigan legend and you are pissing on all of it. What's left that you still love?

In that interview with Chris Howard he seemed to indicate that he had been trying to get on the staff and it didn't work out. Seems like he's bitter toward Harbaugh and possibly a little unbalanced. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people here who sound a lot like him. These are college kids, folks. You just gotta support them and push them to do well. If they don't, it's okay to be bummed out, but if you're really angry you should probably check your priorities in all aspects of your life.

"Marcus, you were a Michigan legend ..."

Um ... was he really a "legend"? Since I avoid the sports talk world, I had to remind myself who Marcus Ray was: Starting safety on the 1997 NC team, twice All-Big Ten, 2nd team All-American in 1997. A co-captain and pre-season All-American pick in 1998 who got suspended six games for associating with a sports agent. Ranks 7th on UM's career list with 10 INT's. Played eight games with Oakland and spent a season in NFL Europe.

So he was a very good college player whose success didn't continue in the NFL. (No shame there, since many college players' don't.) After that, he coached several Ohio high school teams, was a grad assistant at UM and CMU, and wrote a book of inspirational thoughts published by his own company. (In other words, a "vanity press" book.)

So - a "legend?"

No. Woodson was a legend. Tom Harmon and Bennie Oosterbaan and Ron Kramer were legends. Ray was a good college player who had some time in the spotlight 20 years ago. Now the spotlight has moved on, but Marcus is still chasing it. And if returning to that spotlight means throwing shit at Michigan under the guise of "expert analysis," that's a price he's willing to pay. Just as long as you notice him again.

“Marcus Ray was a LEGEND.”

”If you express anger towards the Michigan program or any player (even in general terms), ALL priorities in your life are screwed up.”

Worse than various critical hot takes about the program are the smug concern troll exaggerations by those who think the only appropriate comments are those that blow sunshine and claim that the 18 - 23 year old MEN on the team are actually delicate “kids” that we need to protect from mean words.

Marcus thinks he his the only person on Earth who can break down a game.

If you listen to Jamie Morris on Monday, he has a former OL on his show this season who breaks down the film as well as anyone I have ever heard. He actually said he wanted to start the show with a negative because he wants to end with a positive. This one of the better segments on that station.

He’s the kind of asshole that will start rifts in the fan base. He’ll rip the program up and down if we lose a couple of games and call for Harbaugh’s head. Why? Because he’s an asshole. Just watch, if we lose any of these next four games (statistically likely) he’ll start saying Harbaugh has to go (if he hasn’t already).  This kind of shit pisses me off.

Fuck off Marcus.

I don't know about "Northwestern should have blown Michigan out" but besides that they seem like fair criticisms of the fanbase. You guys don't like it because you're the kind of fans he's talking about.

Incorrect sir. Clare (thanks Faux Mo) just likes to talk shit for the sake of talking shit.

Wanted Butch Jones instead of Harbaugh because he thought he would get a gig on that staff.

He's just a bitter ex player...and he's obviously trying to stay relevant. A poor man's Braylon.

“They seem like fair criticisms of the fan base.”  As a member of that fan base, you’re an asshole and this fan requests that you please speak for yourself.   Marcus Ray’s comments don’t accurately describe anything at all about my fandom or likely the vast majority of anyone else in the stadium on Saturday.  You know nothing about me or anyone else in this fan base other than yourself but keep telling everyone what a genius you are.  I wouldnt purport to extrapolate out to ANY other fan your shitty point of view but then that must be fun and exciting.  If not, why do it?

He was one of Lloyd's guys...definitely not one of Bo's...did take a good shot at Boston from OSU during the 97 game, other than that...meh.

Opinions are like assholes...everybody has one, and they always stink. Marcus's opinions smell like the buffet at some crappy run down Vegas casino.

I think that Sports Illustrated cover got to his head a long time ago. (You'll see the dimmer MGoBlog posters cite that as proof of his toughness. Really.)

From Marcus:

"Michigan's problem is that they out-athlete the bad teams and get out-coached against the good teams."

That pretty well describes almost every team from "Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan" post-(John)Cooper.

Yes...pushing a mouthy over rated OSU wideout who was airborne reeks of manhood!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing Boston getting a shot after starting the crap with Woodson early, but not exactly a skull crushing hit.

Why do so many of Lloyd's guys think they SHOULD talk crap about the program? Griese and some of the others should tell them to STFU. Marcus says he's just telling us what we need to hear, in reality he's showing his disappointment that Michigan hired Harbaugh rather than Butch Jones...fucking Butch Jones. I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Apparently he is trying to fill the void left by the late Drew Sharp and be the designated Michigan Guy Who Bashes His School All the Time.

Let me start by saying Marcus Ray obviously has more claim to being apart of the Michigan family than I could ever hope to, but his remarks lately are just fucking cowardly. These hot takes from him and Braylon are pathetic and don't help the program at all....if Bo were still around they wouldn't dare speak out on the Michigan football program like they have been. Of course they are free to criticize a program they have been such a huge part of, but be a fucking man and go talk to the coaches if you have some questions/criticisms, go talk to Warde Manuel, have some constructive talks with the current players and try to offer some advice or mentorship...don't take cheap twitter shots, talk shit about the fans, and blast the program on radio shows like a fucking coward. Charles Woodson had some words about the program as well, saying we don't treat the OSU game serious enough, but he did so in an honest and respectful way...he wasn't firing off drunk tweets or yelling over radio hosts to trash his alma mater. Notice the true Michigan Men like Woodson, Hutchinson, Griese, who come back to Michigan and raise money for charity, the countless former players who still tailgate at the games, and the men who represent the program so well in other areas...these are men that are helping the program continue to be what we all love. If the Michigan football family is even half as strong as it once was, some of the leaders of these past teams, or Llyod Carr himself need to step up and talk some sense into these guys.

This is exactly right.  The former players and coaches don’t necessarily need to take up for Harbaugh, but they should shut Marcus and Braylon the hell up.  It doesn’t help Michigan win games or recruit better.  It’s just toxic behavior.  It doesn’t mean he doesn’t occasionally make a point, but the delivery is just horrendous.

It feels like Carr has essentially abandoned the program.  Despite that the program - its (his) alumni, the AD, the school, the fans - have honored him and helped his family immeasurably (Chad Strong, anyone?).  Yet, where is he when its time to reign in Braylon and Marcus?  Where was he when the split (nearly) destroyed the program because of a coach hiring he did nothing to help with?

I'm losing my love for Carr.  That makes me sad...  I hope I'm wrong.

His Northwestern comment says a lot Northwestern should not have been in that game had not for all the penalties that we committed Phantom or otherwise. Their first 3 drives were basically half of field because of mistakes and penalties commited by us. They had basically 200 yards of total offense I've never seen a team blowout anybody with 200 yards of total offense you can say that stats or whatever he wants to say but it was 200 yards of offense get over yourself Marcus
