We know this particular member of the media has long been a huge admirer of Coach Harbaugh.

The thing I got out of it was a greater understanding of the fans on here and their negativity. Because the point Cowherd makes is valid.

A bar has been set by a variety of factors. Many set by Coach Harbaugh's behavior and track record. Many set by program history. Some by a media on the hunt to bring down a big name and a big name program.

Whatever the source, the bar is there and undeniable. And with the standard, comes expectations. And it also brings upset posters after losses.

I have been guilty of quickly dismissing the negativity on here as unreasonable. But the expectations aren't based on nothing.

If you read the comments on this blog, you'd think Michigan lost to Notre Dame 24-0 on Saturday night.  Michigan didn't play well and had a few stupid penalties and gave up some really big plays that could have gone either way.  But in no way did Michigan get blown out of the Stadium.

A lot of people want to bet against Jim Harbaugh this year, it seems, for reasons of pure spite. He's 28-12 at Michigan after 3 years and 1 fucking game.

Maybe some historical perspective is in order.

Consider that Lloyd Carr was 29-9 after 3 years and one game (entering his 4th year 1998 No. 5 in the country with all of his recruits), and then proceeded to have his ass handed to him in a high hat by Notre Dame 20-36 in South Bend. A week later Donovan McNabb and Syracuse shredded him and Jim Herrmann's veteran defense 28-38 in Ann Arbor, also in front a national TV audience. Carr's Wolverines finished 10-3.

Moeller was 29-5-3 at the same juncture.  Entering 4th year in 1993 UM beat Washington State, 41-14, but lost to Notre Dame in Ann Arbor a week later 23-27. Michigan was ranked No. 3 and finished 8-4, despite being one of the most deep and talented teams in the country.

Entering Schembechler was 28-5 entering 1972 season and barely beat a depleted Northwestern team 7-0 in the season opener. That same Wildcats team later went 2-9 after a successful 1971 season.  Michigan righted its ship as the season progressed and went 10-1. Only loss to Ohio St. in finale.

Harbaugh has played his 28 wins starting with a shitty hand and a fucked up deck of cards left by his predecessors.

He is definitely accountable in year 4. No mistake.

But I think it's really stupid to damn Harbaugh for another season opening loss on the road in this way, as if this never happened before in Michigan history.  Let us allow this season to play out before casting judgement.

There were stretches where Bo went 1-4-1 against OSU (1970-75) and Lloyd went 1-6 against them (2001-07).  Also, we went 7-7 for a stretch during 2004 and '05, while Bo had a 6-6 season in '84.

Michigan historically would almost never fire a coach, unless it was for some kind of off-field issue (like Mo's drunken episode, Frieder taking the ASU job and Fisher enabling Ed Martin).

Supermodel Dabo Swinney was 25-16 after his first three full years as Clemson HC, going 16-8 in the conference.

He did lead Clemson to the conference championship game in his first full season in 2009, and took the conference championship in 2011.

When Harbaugh took over Michigan he had much more talent than Dabo had at Clemson. Hoke was a shitty coach but he was not a shitty recruiter.

Also when they both started their current jobs Clemson had much lower expectations than Michigan did, so I don't think it's odd that the media's on Harbaugh. Is it justified? IMO yes, but we won't know for sure until after the season.

This is where using reason to formulate expectations, rather than the media, really comes in handy.

Plus in my reasonable mind I don't correlate Harbaugh with a super model. Maybe Coward likes trannies not sure.
