Joey Velazquez on commit watch

[ED:BiSB - I modified the tone slightly. Let's try not to be unnecessary assholes to commits on the very day they commit, eh?]

I agree with your comment about highlights.  Everyone looks impressive on a 3-5 minute highlight film.  The fact is often college coaches get ~2 full game films to break down as part of their evaluations.  24/7, scout and rivals don’t do this for every prospect they evaluate and give their star rankings to.  I put some stock into star rankings but it’s not everything.  They missed on Dixon but according to Browns evaluation, this guy was #2.

This kid look even better on the single game reels (at least on defense) than on the highlights - absolutely everywhere and perfect tackling form.

Dixon is going to going to be a great player at WILL LB for whoever ends up playing for.  I still think we will have a shot at Dixon if this season plays out like I think it will.  We have flipped plenty of PSU commits over the past 2-3 cycles.

Khaleke Hudson was a composite 3* ranked in the upper 300's by the time signing day came. Miles Sanders was the #1 player in Pennsylvania with an overall composite ranking of #21 or somewhere around there.

And this was AFTER the rankings bumps from his senior year as well as the full summer camp bumps. We aren't even close to being there yet. Joey Velazquez will most likely be around the same rankings wise by the end of the recruiting cycle. You are reading into these rankings like it's Signing Day already.

I am pretty stoked on this commitment.  Harbaugh likes guys that play multiple sports.  Probably means they can think and adapt to things.  It is possible his rating is lower due to lack of camps.

It is surprising that the Viper position is hard to fill on a top 5 D.

If you really want to know, Bluey at one time went by Maizen. His schtick back then was that Beilein couldn’t recruit, UM basketball was doomed to mediocrity so long as Beilein remained at the helm, and he would never win shit. So Now you know he is a complete moron who lacks any ability to judge talent, coaching, or potential.

He now spends his time ragging on kids who have accepted scholarship offers from an “overpaid” football coaching staff because a bunch of guys that work at the recruiting sites haven’t given said kids enough stars to make Bluey feel good. Because you know, Bluey and the recruiting services know more about football players than Jim Harbaugh and Don Brown and Chris Partridge and the rest of the staff.

TL;DR Bluey is a cunt that is sure to get caved as soon as humanly possible.

I can't wait until the point totals are updated, because you, sir, have been on a roll lately. If Don Brown wants Joey Velasquez, you can be damn sure Joey Velasquez can play at a very high level.

Welcome Joey, way to GoBlue!

Something tells me even if this kid never plays a down for UofM football, the recruiting value he will bring to UofM over the next 9 months will be enough to always remember this commitment.

When Harbaugh took over Stanford in 2007 the average recruiting team ranking from 2007 to 2010 was 36th in the country, with an average ranking of 0.8518.

In 2010, Stanford went 12-1 and would have been considered for the playoff if there was one. In my eyes this was one of the best teams I have seen in recent memory. Some would say this was because of Andrew Luck, but that is directly correlated with Harbaugh. This was also one of the reasons Harbaugh went to the NFL.

My point being, Bluey, is that Harbaugh is not particularly a “high recruit” guy and has been very capable without 4 and 5 Star guys. His recruiting at Michigan has far surpassed his recruiting at Stanford and it will show, you just have to give it Time. No reason to get your panties in a bunch over who is being recruited.

Stanford has the toughest admissions in the country and was a 1-11 team when Harbaugh took over. If you honestly don't expect him to recruit better at a place like UM after all his success in the NFL and at Stanford, along with the resources he has at UM at his disposal that he didn't have at Stanford, then you are crazy.

Well, the point is that Harbaugh hasn't needed elite recruiting classes to obtain elite results in the past. But you're obviously an idiot, so we'll put it this way:

2016:  Michigan 8th, Stanford 16th

2017:  Michigan 5th, Stanford 14th

2018:  Michigan 21st, Stanford 39th

See? We are recruiting better than Stanford, and this is the fully-weoponized David Shaw version of Stanford he's out-recruiting, not the the no-name brigade Jim Harbaugh created out of thin air in 2007-10. So obviously, Harbaugh is using his success and Michigan's resources to recruit at a higher level. Just like you asked for. Isn't that exciting?!

I’m with pepto. I don’t think you understand the concept that he can do more with less, and I wouldn’t classify the recruiting classes as less. He can recruit better, which is what he is doing, and it will show in the coming years. He is an elite coach, but maybe not an elite recruiter by certain people’s standards. I think the picture here is, Harbaugh has never recruited consistently in the top 5, because 1) he doesn’t need to and 2) the recruiting sites do not necessarily align with who he thinks is elite. Each coach is different and always will be. Harbaugh is his own breed. Us Michigan fans should not want a replica of Meyer or Saban, but our own kind of coach.

I disagree, that was a very disciplined, talented team but they would have been smoked by anyone in the top 5.  The downside of developing 3* talent is that you always have depth problems because 3* talent usually blossoms as 4th/5th year players and there is a huge drop off when you have to sub in a RSFR 3* for a 5th year senior former 3*. Michigan St, Wisconsin, Stanford all put together some really good teams every few years with this formula but all three get dusted by the elite teams stacked with 4/5* depth.

My wife was in grad school at Stanford during the Harbaugh years, went to a lot of games and had a front row seat for his 12-1 season. He deserves a lot of credit but if Harbaugh was the architect for the rebuild, Shaw was the contractor who poured the foundation and did the yeoman's work.

David Shaw made that team what it was, make no mistake his attention to detail is what has been missing in the Michigan offense.  He was a stellar OC, not a single detail went unchecked, he had a fantastic QB and they had an OL that started a ton of games together going into that season.  Likewise, the WR/TE/RB's were all veteran players.

The PAC was god-awful that season. I mean historically bad.  USC was feeling the wrath of sanctions, UCLA/Washington/Cal/WSU were terrible teams.  It was a one game season, Oregon, and Chip Kelly lit us up  with a 22 point loss and there was no way Stanford was a playoff-caliber team that season. It wasn't even close, they just ran circles around us and wore out both sides of the ball.

Harbaugh was hired after the alums finally decided to invest heavily in the program and embark on a 5 year retooling. They expected 3-5 years and got 4.  The end game was always David Shaw, a Stanford alum,  being elevated when Harbaugh moved on.  Shaw was too inexperienced to be the HC in '07 but he was already turning heads as Harbaugh's assistant at USD and the boosters wanted Jim to mentor and develop Shaw along with the program so he could take over and be a 10-15 year Stanford Man.   As you would expect, Stanford boosters are smart and the move proved to be stellar.  Shaw has 3 PAC titles in his first 6 seasons.

I hate to say it, but I give you credit Bluey. Not because I agree with anything that you say (I don't), nor that I enjoy reading any of your posts (I don't).. but you certainly stick to your guns. You play the role of 'heel' quite well.

And to his credit, he does have an intense desire to be angry all the time and puts in the research to find the worst possible take on a recruit or Michigan generally.  Like, he went to Hudson's wikipedia page, found the one line that supported his point (despite being wrong - Hudson was the #1 ATHLETE in PA when he committed; a couple of guys were higher rated at specific positions), and then premised his whole argument on that.

A. "Let's try not to be unnecessary assholes to commits on the very day they commit, eh?"

B. "Not going to spin this any way other than this is quite ridiculous. As if taking a commit from Missouri State's basketball class wasn't enough."
