Heisman Watch / Phil Steele / Shea Patterson

Submitted by UESWolverine on

I just got the College Football Preview magazine and noticed Shea Patterson at #3 in the preseason Heisman list! SBNation has the Vegas odds at 16/1 as well (#5 on their list)! Have we ever had somebody so high on the Heisman list that we hasn't even played a down as a Michigan Wolverine? I know it's only a preseason list, but this is getting me kind of amped up for the season to start. 35671707_10157517044688989_2246841059193651200_n.jpg

I don't think he wins the Heisman if the offense is clicking like that. Bama QBs generally aren't significant Heisman candidates with that kind of offense, for example, and neither are OSU QBs etc. If the offense is clicking with him at the helm, the credit probably gets spread around while guys that are lifting teams more single-handedly.

But I mean if I'm wrong and your scenario plays out I am totally, totally ok with that.

McSorley LOL. His bail out guys are gone. He will likely drop in production. I cannot wait for UM to smash PSU this season.

It would be fantastic if he wins the Heisman.  It would be even more fantastic if we beat Ohio State.  I can't imagine having one without the other.

So...should our passing game actually produce a heisman finalist, add in our defense and you're looking at a playoff team easily. Phil Steele is the most accurate analyst out there. Probably.

That and I just don't see Taylor putting up Mark Ingram numbers unless it's because their passing game dies.

However the past ten years have been lower classmen heavy (none prior to 2007) with Tebow, Bradford, Ingram, Manziel, Winston and Lamar Jackson.

Wisconsin has 6 games they could possibly lose this year prior to the B1G, so if Taylor's numbers are better this year it's likely because Wisconsin returns the entire OL.

Ha! Beat me to it.  Was going to say the same thing.  It is confusing.  Are the odds from somewhere else and he's providing them as an uncredited reference point, or is he contradicting himself, or ... is he just confused how odds work?

Unintentional comedy is the best comedy.

I'm pumping the brakes on Patterson for Heisman in his first season. There are 7 legit defenses on the schedule and it will be tough to see how he doesn't have a couple rough outings.  My reasons:

1. Saw him in person against Cal last year and came away wondering why there was so much hype around him.  3 INT's, could have easily been 5 save for some drops by the D,  and totally ineffective as a runner. I would not call him a running QB. Cal's D was average last year and Patterson was incapable of reading their secondary or avoiding pressure.  Cal and Ole Miss were evenly matched talent-wise so it wasn't like his stat line was skewed because Ole Miss was a massive underdog.

2. Its a big transition.  He played in a read option and an air raid at Ole Miss.  This is his 3rd offense in three seasons and historically spread/air raid guys have struggled going into an offense with pro-style reads. If Harbaugh introduces more spread concepts it depends on how the OL/RB/H pick up the blocking schemes.

3. Harbaugh hates turnovers.  In 10 games he has 3 multiple INT games.  Quickest way to a short leash is a couple picks.

4. Unanswered questions, OL and RB have to be great for a QB to put up Heisman numbers.

5. Harbaugh usually doesn't trust first year QB's to let 'er rip.  Didn't let Luck turn it loose much and put the offense on the RB's.  Same thing with all of the QB's he has had since coming home.

I think he will have a good year but not a great one.  If he sticks around 2019 could be a monster year.

Based on performance I think Haskins should win the Heisman Neg me you want to but the guy is a fantastic QB. Tua looked like crap last night and no one else matches Haskins for passing, yards and TD's.
