2014 IL LB Kyron Watson to Kansas

Submitted by jscbus on

Per the world of Tweets. EDIT: Kyron was presumed to commit on his upcoming visit. However, due to my lack of diligence and misperception, not only did I think Winovich was a heavyyy Ohio lean, I assumed Watson was from St. Louis; confusing many in the process, I'm sure.

Now, after perusing through multiple sources on Winovich's visit reaction, the writing seems to be on the wall.

The staff stymied their efforts in Kyron due to renewed, strengthened interest in Chase. Things are now apparently heading in different directions for each recruit, so I will reiterate that Kyron Watson, an OLB out of East St. Louis, Illinois, has verbally pledged to Kansas.

As commented below, sorry for any blemishes on my end. It looks as though the staff is now concerned with the SAM position.

East St. Louis "IS" St. Louis

Yes, it's a different state, but it's literally just across the Mississippi river. If you're from I mean it's like Southfield and Detroit. Only if Southfield was one of the most dangerous places in the country.

But he's from the same area as the St. Louis Rams, the Arch, Nelly...that St. Louis.

East St. Louis, Flint, northeastern Ohio are some of the roughest, poorest places in the country.

So then what exactly are you confused about?  The only issue was that the OP said he was from Missouri, which is not true since he's from Illinois.  Some metropolitan areas cross state lines, but when you list what state a player is from, it makes sense to list the correct state.

If a kid was from Hoboken, you wouldn't say he's from New York state just because it's a suburn of NYC, same with a kid from Camden or Kansas City, KS or East Chicago, that type of thing.

Some people from NJ do say they are from NY (since the state and the city have the same name, it just depends what you mean).

Plus, he could have moved from one suburb/state to another suburb/state all while being in the same metro area.  So for all we know he could be 'from Missouri' even if he currently resides in Illinois.  Or Alaska for that matter.

More importantly, the absolute geographic lines are less important than the idea/intent.  Someone from Lapeer might describe themselves as being "from Detroit".  If your audience isn't familiar with Michigan, it gets the job done.

But we're not having a casual conversation with Watson about what area he's from.  I agree with you that someone from Hoboken might say they were from New York when on vacation out of state, because it gives off the jist, just like when I'm back in MI I tell people I live in LA when I actually live in a suburb.

But in recruiting, when you list 2014 IL LB Kyron Watson, you should get that right.  If a kid goes to Temperance Bedford, would it make sense to say he lives in Ohio just because it's close to the border and is essentially a Toledo suburb?  No, because the kid is from Michigan and will play in the MHSAA playoffs and so on.  Kyron Watson lives very close to Missouri, but he plays high school football in Illinois and is ranked by the recruiting sites in their list of top Illinois players.  So for these purposes it makes a difference.

You're right, but I actually lived in the city limits when I created this account, and didn't feel the need to change it when I moved.  But even so, WolvinValencia isn't very informative since most people outside of the LA area (and probably some in it) don't know where that is.  Whenever I travel out of the state, I always just say I live in LA unless the person I'm telling is familiar with the area.

Dude has an offer, but I haven't seen anything about this guy.  I'm assuming he is a Buckeye lock and/or hasn't shown much interest?  Thought it was relevant given that he is a 6'3" linebacker out of Ohio, and it seems like a guy the coaches would be pushing hard for.

Yeah, that's a weird situation.  He's a very highly rated player, has had an offer forever, yet we hear nothing about him.  I have to imagine either a) he simply has no interest in Michigan (Buckeye lock or otherwise), or b) there is some other reason we're not going hard after him (grades, behavior, etc.).  Let it be known that I am not suggesting anything here, but one of those things is very likely true.
