OT: RIP Comedian Jonathan Winters
It's still a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, but it's a little less wacky now that Jonathan Winters has gone to entertain at the heavenly comedy clubs.
He was one cool guy & quite funny, too.
One of my all time favorite movies. My dad sat my brother and I down when we were real young and told us to watch this. He never thought we would last 10 minutes with it being so long and so old. We loved it and watched the whole thing. We still get a good laugh here and there when we bring it up.
RIP Jonathan
RIP and Semper Fi
He was indeed a very funny man and and his work continues even now to be an inspiration to improv comedians. Actually, in addition to "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World", there was also "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming", which is an over-the-top but funny movie and Winters helps make that one endearing as well. Some of his best stuff came when he was driving the hosts of countless shows up the wall in hilarious ways with his characterizations and offbeat observations - he was literally a comedy factory like that.
He was also very quotable - my personal favorite was always, "I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it."
RIP Jonathan Winters.
Underrated comedy.
Is that Alan Arkin in that opening scene?
Remember his hosting appearance on the Muppet Show very well from my childhood. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but watching it now you can tell what a great comedic talent he was.
I've watched "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" a couple times and it's never gotten a single laugh out of me. "The Russians Are Coming" is hilarious, though.
Went (thankfully) beyond the horrid season when Jonathan Winters was on Mork & Mindy. Williams has cited Winters as one of his great inspirations. Many other comics can probably say the same. He was a tremendously talented man.
I remember his stint on Mork and Mindy as being awesome, although I was maybe 5 or six at the time that show was aired so I may not have been the most astute television critic.
Sad loss for comedy. R.I.P.
One of the funniest people to grace the earth. He will be missed.
I think he did plenty of "cameos" on Scooby Doo cartoons back in the day. That's how I first knew about him. He was an upgrade over Don Knotts.
