06/08/2017 - 6:29pm The Best M Sporting Event...

...I've ever seen live wasn't a football game. Despite having been to the '97 OSU game, '98 Rose Bowl, '04 MSU, all night games, and pretty much every other big game played since the late 80's, the best M sporting event I've ever seen live was the 2002 NCAA Hockey Regional Final at Yost against Denver. Come-from-behind victory had the building shaking. Never seen an atmosphere like that at any game, any sport, pro or college.

04/11/2017 - 10:30pm Phone

All this reminiscing about the "Old Yost" has me lamenting one of the biggest mistakes made in recent years. While not nearly as egregious as the goal horn, barrage of commercials, and occasional piped-in music, the removal of the old-timey phone from the press area was a huge loss.

When that phone rang, everoyne in the building could hear it, and responded with, "Hey [Oppsing Goalie], it's your mom. She says, YOU SUCK!"

Great memories of Yost from 98 to 02 as a student. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but seems like a whole different venue today than it was in those days.

01/09/2017 - 12:04pm I believe it was last year

I believe it was last year that they had the regular camera angle without announcers on ESPN Classic. Unfortunately, the lack of HD dooms this option. If they had it in HD, it would be great: normal camera views with crowd noise, band, and PA announcer, no play by play or commentators.

05/23/2016 - 4:02pm Softball Game 3 (if necessary) - ESPNU

Minor point of clarification.

Per site, game 3 of the Super Regional (if necessary) will air on ESPNU, not ESPN.

09/25/2015 - 1:04pm For my money as a fan, I'd

For my money as a fan, I'd rather play series against the teams from Alaska than from Arizona. Has more of an appeal to me as a hockey fan, but maybe that's just my personal preference. On the other hand, travel costs to Anchorage or Fairbanks likely dwarf what it costs to send a hockey team to Phoenix for the weekend.

09/15/2015 - 11:15pm Fab 5

Apologies if this has been addressed already, but looked like a quick cameo in the video of the Fab 5 from a photo shoot when they were student-athletes. Would this be the first time the university has used their images in a promotional capacity since the self-imposed sanctions took effect years ago?

05/14/2015 - 5:28pm Honor if you're coming from

Honor if you're coming from the U.S. "Honour" if you're coming from Canada.

04/23/2015 - 9:48am 2000 Ice Breaker

I remember that tournament well.  North Dakota was, if I recall correctly, ranked #1 and Michigan was ranked #2. Everyone thought they would face off in the tournament final on Saturday, but both lost on Friday in shootouts.  Colgate and New Hampshire, I think, ended up in the final.  Was a highly anticipated season-opening weekend that turned into a semi-dud.

02/17/2015 - 10:23am So does that mean the only

So does that mean the only outdoor track for student use is the crumbling concrete one at Palmer Field?  I know I and many other students used that Ferry Field track regularly when not in use by one of the Track and Field teams and unless I'm mistaken, it was the only "soft" track surface on or around central campus.

02/12/2015 - 9:29am 30 for 30: Judgment Day

Would be interesting, IMHO, to see a 30 for 30 type series about the famous "Judgment Day" in November 1997 when M demolished Penn State, Nebraska barely beat Missouri on the questionably kicked ball play, and (I think) FSU beat UNC in the  undercard.

Could start on that day, follow the teams through the Bowl season, and then delve into Heisman sour grapes at Tennessee that led to Fullmer's voting Michigan 4th in the final coaches poll, giving Nebraska a share of the title.

11/18/2014 - 12:43pm Perhaps they'll just put the

Perhaps they'll just put the student section in a sound-proof enclosure.  That's the path they've been heading down since the mid '00s.

08/20/2014 - 10:50am First game as an alum.  Being

First game as an alum.  Being in the stadium, looking at the student section from afar, and experiencing the entire thing without my group of friends.  There were tears when the band played The Victors.

08/20/2014 - 9:20am 1.  Michigan beating OSU in

1.  Michigan beating OSU in 2003 in Ann Arbor to send the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl.  Felt like an eternity since we had been to the Rose Bowl (even though it had only been 6 years...little did we know what was coming in the next decade).

2.  The first home game post-9/11 was emotional.  The American flags replacing the Big Ten school flags around the Stadium, the teams being on the field for the anthem, the patriotic-themed halftime show...and the security and feeling of vulnerability. All new at that time.

Links to youtube videos of that game's pre-game and halftime performance:

08/12/2014 - 12:35pm Cancellation is an option

I called the ticket office (734-764-0247) this morning and asked if, in light of the recent developments, they would accept cancellations of already-purchased season tickets for hockey. They said they would but that it needs to be in writing (email to [email protected]). FYI.

08/12/2014 - 9:38am Has anyone called and asked

Has anyone called and asked for a refund/to cancel their season ticket renewal? Contemplating doing that but curious to know if anyone has tried.

08/12/2014 - 7:31am I hate to do this, but the

I hate to do this, but the email the Athletic Dept. sent around isn't necessarily wrong.  All they said was that the price was lower this year, not the per-game price:

"Season ticket prices for the 2014-15 season have been lowered; this coming season, endzone locations have dropped by 15% ($400 vs. $340), sideline/mid-endzone by 12% ($450 vs. $395), and center ice by 10% ($525 vs. $475)."

That being said, the whole situation shouldn't surprise anyone, because it's the same thing happening across the board: take advantage of the most loyal fans and screw them any way the Athletic Department can.  The experience of going to games at Yost has gone dramatically downhill in the past copule of years (as someone posted above, the goal horn is a minor tweak that would make a major improvement).

It has been common practice for at least a decade to schedule high-profile games in both basketball and hockey over student breaks, not include those games in student packages, and then sell those discounted student tickets at full price to the public, so I'm not surprised there are a bunch of games over student break.  Seems unavoidable to some extent that some of those games would fall over break, until you consider the fact that they take almost two months off between home games, for the second season in a row.

At some point the loyal fans need to put their money where their mouths are and stop buying the tickets.  I renewed this year but after being dicked around, I'm not renewing next year.  That's the only way things are going to change.

07/11/2014 - 3:34pm The question is not limited

The question is not limited to football ("Of the Michigan games you've attended, which one is your favorite, and what makes it stand out so much?"), so I won't confine my answer to football.

The best Michigan sporting event I've ever been to is a no-brainer: 2002 Regionals at Yost.  Michigan beating St. Cloud on Friday (the legendary Molly game) and the win over Denver on Saturday to send Michigan to the Frozen Four are two of the better games you'll see anywhere in any sport.  Saturday's win over Denver had the building shaking and louder than I've ever heard Yost or any other Michigan venue.  Hard to imagine that will ever be matched at a home game, since the regionals appear unlikely to return to Yost anytime soon (and the student section is a shadow of its former self).

That wasn't a double in any league, not even tee ball. But I guess it's no different than how they score things in MLB these days. Pad those offensive numbers.

Seriously. This looks like a misguided "turn back the clock" attempt. Not as bad as the infamous MLB uniforms of the future from the mid-to-late 90's, but nothing ever is. Still really, really bad.

Shocking that icing in the second OT leads to the game winning goal. Lazy play leads to bad results. Fitting end (for now, hopefully not for long) to a frustrating season.

03/20/2014 - 2:52pm Probably blasphemy to say

Probably blasphemy to say this, but this game is the more important of the two the Wolverines are playing today.  Basketball is a 2-seed and is expected to win handily.  Hockey needs this win and all bets are off based on their inconsistent play all season, and especially against Penn State.  Go Blue.

MGoBlog at its finest. Those who follow this hockey team/program closely all probably feel the same way: Brian speaks for us and is incredibly on-point. Laughed outloud and can't wait for some more hockey coverage in the coming week (and hopefully weeks).

Gold medal game is same time next Sunday, FYI.

02/14/2014 - 10:33am Yes, they're in fine position

Yes, they're in fine position to make the playoffs, but losing Zetterberg might change all of that.

By the numbers, the Wings are 6 point out of third place in their Atlantic Division.  Top 3 teams from Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions make the playoffs, as do the next two best teams from the Eastern Conference.  Montreal and Toronto both have 70 points, but the Wings have played 2 fewer games than Toronto and 1 fewer game than Montreal.  They could easily climb into the top 3 of the division with a hot streak.  Tampa Bay has 71 points and also has played two more games than the Wings.

That being said, the Wings are right now just one point ahead of three teams vying for the final wild card spot (Ottawa, Columbus, Washington), while two other teams (Carolina and New Jersey) have 61 points.

A solid March and April will get the Wings into the playoffs.  But just how they'll put together a solid 6 weeks is tough to figure out with all the injuries they're facing.

01/23/2014 - 10:01pm Will take the win, no

Will take the win, no question. But we want moooooooooore goals, generally speaking.

Hoping for a long match. Would love to catch the end when I wake up. Would be cool to see an all Swiss final.

01/17/2014 - 11:16am It was a well-done

It was a well-done documentary.

Perhaps the highlight for me was seeing clips of Cobo Arena configured with an ice rink, although there wasn't much footage.  Anyone know how often and for what purposes Cobo was used as an ice arena?

01/15/2014 - 11:45am Nice to see Larry Henry on

Nice to see Larry Henry on the documentary.

I haven't heard anything yet regarding who will take over as the new football play by play man, but he would seem to be a great candidate.  Long association with both M football and basketball during the 80s-90s, great voice, and a lot of energy/enthusiasm in the booth.

01/10/2014 - 12:51pm Michigan's status as "poster

Michigan's status as "poster child" for Nike during the late 90's had more to do with Michigan than with Nike.  Michigan was coming off the Fab Five era when they started with Nike in the mid-90's, before any of the scandal associated with that era was known.  They were also (gasp!) winning football games and were still considered a powerhouse in the conference and nationally.  While the basketball program appears to be back on track, football is, at best, a middle-of-the-pack conference team and has been for some time.  How can any company market a program as top notch when the results plainly don't support that?

12/12/2013 - 9:56am For me, nothing will compare

For me, nothing will compare to the 2002 regional at Yost.  Atmosphere was electric.  When Michigan overcame a third period deficit against Denver to win the regional in 2002, the building was shaking.  It has been well-documented on this site in years past, but that was an incredible environment for a sporting event.  Still ranks ahead of almost every football game I've attended since I started going in the mid-80's, and I haven't missed any important ones.

12/12/2013 - 9:45am Thanks for posting.  Always

Thanks for posting.  Always great to see the online repository of Michigan moments expanded.

Haven't been able to find video of what was I believe the 1995 Michigan-Purdue football game, which I believe ended with Michigan winning 5-0.  Was at that game and recall that it was the worst weather I've ever experienced at a game in Ann Arbor.  Would love to see a video of that to compare it to my memories of the event.

12/12/2013 - 9:40am The thing that has to be most

The thing that has to be most concerning to Michigan hockey fans is another third-period lead squandered.  Granted, it's early in the season, and a one-goal lead is the most miniscule of margins, but it's another example in a growing portfolio of late-game lead changes, not in our favor.

12/11/2013 - 9:57am Does anyone know what the

Does anyone know what the plans are for the two games on 12/31?

I know they are playing games at 1 and 3:30, but do we know which players will be playing in which game?

Thanks in advance.

11/18/2013 - 10:46am BWW Bowl is 12/28 at 10:15 PM

BWW Bowl is 12/28 at 10:15 PM ET, I believe.

GLI title game is earlier that day, 7 PM scheduled start.

Wouldn't be a terrible doubleheader...

11/16/2013 - 6:13pm Did Nebraska blow it by not

Did Nebraska blow it by not challenging the non-touchback call in the 3rd?

Looked like State player touched punt while he was in the end zone but ball was spotted at 1 yard line. Fumble on next play leads to spartan touchdown.

Am I missing something or did the Huskers blow a chance to challenge and win?

11/14/2013 - 3:14pm Yost...

Great footage of Yost in the glory days (which I generally define as 1996-2003).  You can attribute the decline in intensity all you want to renovations and reconfiguration, but it's not just that.  Yost is no longer a place where students come first and foremost to watch hockey.  Now it's dancing and nonsense and costumes.  There was some of that back then, but hockey was center stage.  Not anymore.

11/10/2013 - 3:46pm Worse than any other venue is

Worse than any other venue is Yost. Smaller, intimate venue where the band dominates, but we've seen more piped in music at Yost the past two seasons with the new scoreboard and sound system. It doesn't happen often, but even once is one time too many. Best band at any M event. Should be them or bust.

11/10/2013 - 9:30am Question unrelated to booing:

Question unrelated to booing: were there a lot of empty seats yesterday? I know tickets were very cheap on secondary market and plentiful. Haven't seen the actual attendance issue discussed here so am assuming it was almost full but wanted confirmation.

11/10/2013 - 9:27am Doesn't "save the season" but

Doesn't "save the season" but ends it on the best note possible. And plunges a lot of Buckeyes into a dark, deep abyss for the next 11 months. Nothing better.

11/10/2013 - 9:24am If this team doesn't win the

If this team doesn't win the next 3 games and still plays on New Year's Day, it should be a wake up to anyone who doesn't recognize how terrible the bowl system is.

On a positive note, a non- NYD game would keep attention on Jan. 1 on the Wings-Leafs at Michigan Stadium.
