Trey Burke Suspended for NMU Game
Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) |
|
Trey Burke has been suspended by John Beilein forthe Northern Michigan game for a violation of team standards. |
Rod Beard (@detnewsRodBeard) |
|
Beilein: "Trey will sit out the first game as a result of some 'out of character' decisions he now regrets." |
Rod Beard (@detnewsRodBeard) |
|
Beilein: "We believe (Burke) has learned a valuable lesson and we are confident he will grow from this experience." |
I would expect that puts a damper on Burke's potential selection as a team captain.

PLEASE be a one-off thing (happens to the best of us) and not a red flag about where your head is at, Trey. This team needs your leadership and can do really special things if everyone is pulling in the same direction...

I'm not sure he reads this blog...

I was talking to the cosmos in general as a communication style rather than actually believing he would read it, Mr McSnarkypants.

I was thinking the same thing. People always post messages on this board, as if the person it is addressed to will read it.

actually do read this blog

So when Lewan was talking about people on the internet trashing Russell Bellomy...

Beilein said four starters are confirmed: Albrecht, GRIII, Morgan and THJ. Fifth spot is open.
Also, Horford will not play, but McGary is available.
October 31st, 2012 at 3:36 PM ^
When it was reported that Horford might be ready for the opener was Beilein referring to NMU game or IUPUI game?

If any of the freshman play in this game, could they hypothetically preserve their redshirts since it is an exhibition? coughcoughalbrechtlevertcoughcough. <----- !! subtle coughing technique which cleverly disguises a hidden message !!
October 31st, 2012 at 11:59 PM ^
That said, I don't know if I want Albrecht redshirting. We need someone to spell Burke at the point and Spike may be our best bet. Caris is likely the best shot at redshirting in the freshman class, but the rave reviews other players and Beilein are giving him makes me think he'll see playing time too.
The good news is we'll get a good look at both of them tomorrow and be able to decide for ourselves if we want them to play this year!
October 31st, 2012 at 3:07 PM ^
that he was TOO good in practice this week and embarrassed the 2nd team a little too much. At least that's what I'm choosing to believe.

Albrecht is starting. But LeVert will probably get some quality minutes.
October 31st, 2012 at 3:36 PM ^
"Beilein hopes to play Caris LeVert 10-20 minutes tomorrow."

IIRC, he violated a team rule, so he played off of the bench for the first game.

October 31st, 2012 at 3:19 PM ^
just Beilein's nice way of saying Albrecht is better without embarrassing Trey too much.
Probably not, you say? Ok.
October 31st, 2012 at 3:20 PM ^
Dang. Not a great way to start what looks like a very promising season, especially considering that you're a preseason All-American to just about everyone out there. On a side note however, this presents a heck of an opportunity for Spike Albrecht. Starting at point guard for the #5 Michigan Wolverines in your first ever college game. Obviously the circumstances aren't the best, but hopefully he can show the coaches and the fans that he is more than capable of running the point if Trey is not able to due to foul issues, etc.

What is it with this Twitter phenomenon? The television announcers are constantly telling me to use Twitter to hear about the game or to talk to them or something or the other, but I can't for the life of me understand why players continue to use this website that only seems to bring about negative consequences. Nor do I understand why people who write on this website constantly cite to Twitter, as it seems like this is the main source of non- and mis-information on the internet. Just call your friends on the phone or send them an e-mail, I don't understand this fascination with just blabbering away jibberish to a bunch of people you don't know. That's what crazed homeless folk do on street corners, not college athletes.

Our generation shares and connects online, often publicly. Twitter is not the problem. The problem is saying stupid things in public, whether that's on Twitter or in post game interviews or whatever. The vast majority of tweets by student-athletes are perfectly harmless, or even inspirational. The "Twitter is evil" meme was old the moment it was uttered.
October 31st, 2012 at 6:25 PM ^
Using my 4G smartphone, I checked Wikipedia and the number of stupid things that get college athletes into trouble has risen by 1100% since the advent of Twitter. That includes ex-girlfriends who hacked your account, secondary recruiting violations as a result of Tweeting recruits at your old high school, injury reports on teammates while they are still being transported to University Hospital by EMT's, second-hand accounts of local police investigations involving other teammates, general trashtalking about other schools and their student athletes, and my favorite Twitter controversy of all time -- the debate, on Twitter, over whether your school's head coach banned the use of Twitter by team members.
Edit. - Here's what I want to know; what good is Twitter, really, if we can't find somebody who lives on the same dorm hall as some of the Michigan freshmen, who can tell us the real reason that Burke got into trouble? And put the word out, on Twitter?

I still love you.

I wish you were real.
October 31st, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
Just as we hoped RDT was for real, and some now hope KateGoBlue is for real. I'm not sure how WIAB fits into this cast of characters (he may have been the original "real" account), but I smell a term paper or journal publication. How does a blog react to standard online archetypes (gentlemanly southerner, old man, hot chick... all saying what we expect), as opposed to real "living" ones?
October 31st, 2012 at 4:44 PM ^
I hope you do well on that paper, "cynic who has it all figured out" guy.
October 31st, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
For the record it was established that WIAB and RDT were one and the same person so that one's not up for debate on any level. KategoBlue, IMO, is probably the latest incarnation of the person formally known as WIAB/RDT given the similarities in their writing styles, their interests and "her" arrival date on the board. I'm sure the Mods know (or have the resources available to know) by simply confirming the IP address of the user. The fact that "Kate" is allegedly a hot chick who just happens to know a lot about Michigan football, recruiting and likes to post the same pictures in response to comments that WIAB/RDT did is just too much of a wacky coincidence for me to believe they arent one and the same.
Herm I believe is....well....Herm. And I believe he's probably a 72 year old guy who went to Michigan, loves football and is relatively new to the whole internet thing. His writing style is truly not like anyone else I've seen on the board and his opinions are entirely consistent with someone of his generation.

lol whatever, it was probably something minor. coach B is using this as a teaching point for not just trey, but for the entire team. if we can't beat nmu w/o trey, we have much bigger problems at hand.
keep calm and carry on
also, re: captains, your guys are probably eso akunne and THJ
October 31st, 2012 at 3:33 PM ^
I would guess Jordan Morgan instead. He seems like he's really figured out his role as a teammate (from videos), and he's got a great head on his shoulders.
October 31st, 2012 at 3:37 PM ^
I think Tim and Jordan are the most likely candidates. Jordan has been around as long as Eso and has proven himself on the court as a capable big man in the B1G. Plus, as I recall he's going for Biomed Engineering which seems to set a good example for balancing academics and sports (requisite 3.6 GPA for the program as I recall)
October 31st, 2012 at 4:02 PM ^
I know Coach B doesn't necessarily look to seniors as captains (Novak), but in this group I think it's possible that Person or Vogrich could join THJ and/or Morgan

That's a bummer. It's too bad for Burke that he doesn't play for Izzo since he wouldn't serve any suspnsion at all (see Nix debacle)

Yeah, not like Izzo kicks players off his team for being a team disruption
