Never a dull moment in America's number one evolutionary anthopology lab.  To recap (other information is on 11w and other sources if you're actually interested in following up on this kerfuffle):

Torg (of Columbus 97.1 FM sports radio fame 'Common Man and the Torg' tweets that he wishes Desmond Howard would get fired or die so he could watch GameDay again.

Herbstreit comes to Desmond Howard's defense on Columbus station 97.1 Monday with a long and indignant rant calling out the Torg without actually mentioning Torg by name.

Common Man mentions on Monday's show later that afternoon that co-host Torg is "resting" and will return later.  He also has some choice words for Fake Buckeyes that did not explicitly mention any well-coiffed former OSU quarterbacks who happened to wear no. 4 and got knocked out in the 1991 Heisman game.

Pass the popcorn and/or Iacono's pizza.

I married a buckeye alumni and I am a Michigan alumni and I get this stuff all the time from both sides. Herbie was dead on. It's just college sports, there are much more important things in life.

That DJ should be ashamed.

Married a Buckeye alumnus, however, I graduated from GVSU and not Michigan.  I'm just a lifelong die hard fan from northern MI.  You sir are spot on in saying that there are more important things in life.  I respect her fandom and she does the same.  I even got her to the Big House for Air Force this year, much to the dismay of her enitre family.

They are entertaining. They make jokes like this everyday and no one says anything about it. It's the drive home schtick thing. I do see how it can be construed as offensive, because it is. That said, I think this has been made into a story when it doesn't necessarily need to be. Herbie went out of his way to throw Torg under the bus. Desmond's wife went even further by replying and saying her family was scared. Take one look at Torg's twitter feed and you can see he's a harmless Buckeye homer. He made a joke in bad taste. I don't think this needs to be an issue or a story personally.

Moving on.

So, living in the Columbus area gives you two options for sports talk: 97.1 or the Fox affiliate (OK, there's an AM ESPN affiliate too). I typically listen to their show driving home. A far cry from the heyday of Stoney and Wojo, but not horrendous. Torg very much has the Wojo shtick of making fun of himself and not taking things too seriously (except the abomination that is the tenure of Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson).

I think Torg was out of line and his Des-hate is frankly weird. But he's 100x better than Drew Sharp.

It's time for a metaphor:

The FDA allows for beef to contain 2% e. coli and still consider it acceptable.  Walmart has been guilty of selling meat with up to 50% (!!!!!!) e. coli.

Every fanbase has at least 2% idiots.  Ohio State is the Walmart of fanbases.  I have known respectable Ohio fans.  I know even more Ohio idiots.

End metaphor.

Desmond in his career has:

  • Played on 3 Big 10 championship teams
  • Defeated Ohio 3 straight seasons
  • Appeared in 2 Rose Bowls
  • Won the Heisman Trophy
  • Played in the NFL for 11 seasons
  • Played on Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers
  • Named MVP of Super Bowl XXXI
  • Inductee in College Football Hall of Fame
  • 7 Years as Broadcaster on ESPN College GameDay

Torg in his career has:

  • Come up with the on-air moniker of "Torg"

I think that just about covers it.
