OT: Isiah fired by Florida International. Tom Gores should bring him back to Detroit

Submitted by NateVolk on

For anybody who was a fan hoping for a contender during the Vitale debacle and the home grey uniforms at the Silverdome in the early 80s, Isiah Thomas is revered. He probably saved pro-basketball in Detroit.  In my mind the greatest pure point guard ever to lace them up.

Homer PSA:

His post-Piston's career has been a succession of "I can't look" events save some decent drafts with the Raptors and a good couple years coaching the Pacers.   I want him to come home now. Davidson is gone and this new owner became a fan during the 80s.  The Pistons are dull and irrelevant and the Captain seems pretty rudderless. The two parties need each other IMO. Find the man some job with the organization where he can help give some life to the Pistons.

To focus on the positive, check out his dual with Bernard King in the 84 Playoffs.  No one his size before or since could take over a game like he could.

working in a good amount of stuff he wasn't saying in the first place. "Fuck Trey Burke" is a little different than saying "I think he's making a bad career move but good luck to him, I'll be cheering for M next season regardless".

Basically every other person on that thread said something along the lines of his newly constructed sentence and nobody had a problem with it. He's upset because he couldn't confine his posting to Burke's career and had to go personal, which drew a negative reaction. If he had read the FAQ, he should have expected to get negged/post deleted/account banned with the personal attacks on Burke.

Why did my post get deleted/edited? Getting personal on college athletes usually results in a deletion, and virtually always when it's a Michigan player in question.

I know dude, The MGoCommunity can suck sometimes. For real. I like telling people to fuck off. So the next time you feel the need to tell somebody to fuck off, aim it at me. I won't get mad.

Cursing at an 18 year-old who just lead Michigan to its first Big 10 title in a long time will get you minus many points. They'll come back in two weeks.

Yeah, sorry but it is true.  The Mgoblog forum has some of the thinnest skin that I've ever witnessed on the internet.  It's like walking on eggshells around here.

The Pistons are bad enough right now.  They don't need Isiah to make them worse.  Isiah was a great player, but he has proven time and again that he is not a coach and he is not an executive.

If Isiah saved enough money, he should just retire.  He would be great on TV, though.  The same impulsiveness that makes him suck as a coach, GM, or VP would make him a star in front of a camera.

but please, do NOT bring Isiah back to the Pistons as a coach or GM, or really in any capacity.  He has been a miserable failure at every stop in his post-playing career, save a few decent seasons with the Pacers.  Let's not even mention some of the other baggage he brings with him.  Pains me to say all that, because I loved him as a kid, cheering for him and the Bad Boys, but it's the truth.  Just because you were great at playing the game, doesn't mean you can run a team.  See Michael Jordan for another example.

The fact that Florida International University still exists means that this was one of the most succesful jobs Thomas has done in his post playing career.

I think the parallel with Millen is right on the money.  Look, Isiah Thomas is clearly an intelligent man who knows a lot about basketball, but for whatever reason he just doesn't have what it takes to succeed as a coach or GM.  I would be very interested in hearing what the man would have to say about the game either from courtside or from the studio.  His reputation as a player plus his undeniable charisma would make him a natural for that kind of thing.  But I don't want him making decisions and I'd be very reluctant to even have him as a consultant.

I agree let's bring him back.  Sure he's a little old and hasn't played in awhile but he could be an upgrade at point guard.  At the very least it would be entertaining.

Isiah destroyed an entire league for crying out loud.  I loved his playing career and all but his track record when put in charge of things is absolutely the worst thing ever.

Zeke was a great player, but his post-playing achievements strongly suggest post-concussion syndrome.  Poor soul.

Gores needs to hire a really strong right hand person for Joe D.  Things haven't been the same since John Hammond left for the Bucks.

Zeke: Great player. After that, the only thing he has done well professionally is be a studio analyst. The rest has been abysmal. The only job I would give him with the Pistons would involve him wearing a name badge and a hairnet.

You're joking about letting him anywhere near the Pistons front office, right? You'd have to be out of your damn mind to want him in any sort of official role with the organization. He's an amazing player who Detroit will be forever indebted to, but he's solidified himself as one of the worst front office personnel in the NBA's recent history.

...but I will say, the track record in management would not motivate me to consider bringing him to Detroit. We may question some of Dumars' decisions, but we would likely question nearly all of Thomas', and that would render him ineffective both with the team and within the community. In any event, I found his book on Amazon, clicked on this link, and Google Chrome crashed unexpectedly. It's a bad sign...

Unless he'll be playing, please don't bring him anywhere near the Detroit Pistons.  The guy couldn't coach/manage/GM/non-sexually harrass someone if his life depended on it.  Everything he touches turns dead.

The guy is the ultimate cancer. He's screwed more people and driven more companies into the ground than anyone else I can think of.

Keep him far, far away from the Pistons.
