Detroit News article on Shane Morris
Angelique S. Chengelis wrote a nice lengthy article on Shane Morris. I don't know how the kid hasn't let all this get to his head. If I were in his shoes I would be a trainwreck. The headline makes it sound like its about him recruiting for Michigan but it does not get very specific. Regardless everyone will enjoy this article about our next great Michigan QB.

He also ended any "will he be an early-enrollee?" drama quite effectively

CEO on and off the field (I hope). Shane Morris, welcome to the big stage in the big house.

Simply tremendous. Most seniors-to-be in his position are worried about so many other things while in high school, but Shane has truly become an ambassador for Michigan recruiting. The part where he says he talks to the coaching staff about what receivers they want to target and Shane then tries to contact them through social media really shows how much he cares for Michigan. Can't wait until he puts on that winged helmet for us.

makes me nervous actually. Isn't there some sort of "rule" around this? With the crap the NCAA comes up with in the form of "rules" this seems like something they'd have thought of, no?
February 21st, 2012 at 8:53 AM ^
Hm maybe. As far as I know there isn't anything on that. But I'm far from an expert on NCAA recruiting rules, so who knows.
February 21st, 2012 at 9:15 AM ^
It's probably against the rules since giving jobs to recruits' girlfriends isn't. The NCAA makes too much sense; God forbid a player talk to a potential future teamate before he signs his LOI.

Don't worry. They know what they are doing. The conversation went like this:
SM: Coach, what receivers do you want?
CH: I can't comment on any potential players before LOIs are signed. But in general we want receivers that are tall, fast, hungry, physical, tough, and that love UM.
SM: Okay, coach, I'll see what I can do.

NCAA doesn't count commits as being affiliated with the university. After he signs the LOI it is different. He could easily be commited to wisconsin next week (Not that Shane would do that, I think we know by now that he is a solid verbal).
We are in the clear.

He also punts?! Didn't know that, could make for some exciting 4th down plays in short yardage close to midfield.

like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too... new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

Paul allen is that you?

I think Phil Collins works best within the confines of a group, rather than a solo artist. And I do mean artist. This is Sussudio - a great, great song...

Oh god he punts too? Thank god Lloyd Carr is done then. We'd have so many QB punts...
I hate those. (Not trying to rip on Lloyd, just hate QB punts)

Is that boy going to put on some muscle before he gets to Ann Arbor?
February 21st, 2012 at 9:14 AM ^
Nope, he's stuck with his 16-year old body for the rest of his life. He'll probably never grow again.

Wishing at the Zoltar Machine: you're doing it wrong.

I remember Shane talking on twitter about being up to 194 lbs.
February 21st, 2012 at 9:28 AM ^
...he's getting swoll?

Yessir.

Good to hear. Just get a little worried when I see such a low weight for a quarterback. I'm guessing he'll be up to something around 220 before he gets the starting job at Michigan?
February 21st, 2012 at 10:10 AM ^
I'd rather see him get to 6'4" or 6'5" before he gets to 200 lbs. We just hauled in some monsters on the OL that won't take kindly to getting hit in the back of the head by a pass!

Those are some big boys coming in. Denard would have some serious trouble throwing over them. Even seeing our short receivers would be a challenge for Denard. Another reason Hoke wants big fast receivers, Shane/Devin needs to be able to see them over our monster line.

Fun fact that will interest no one but me: Shane Morris’ coach, Paul Verska, was the coach at Ann Arbor Huron High School in the 90’s when I was there. He led Huron to the state finals after I graduated, which was kind of a big deal locally. (For those not familiar with Ann Arbor, the Huron River Rats have traditionally been the little brother to Pioneer High in football. Fittingly, one of our colors is green) I actually took a physical training class with him and the varsity football team my final semester of high school (I needed a phys ed credit, and that was the only thing that fit in my schedule) I remember him being a great guy and someone I’d love to have as a coach if I had a single athletic bone in my body. I never realized he’d moved on to Warren de la Salle until I read the article just now.

He looks like a great kid who will probably be a good QB, but for someone who hasn't played a down of college ball yet he is getting way to hyped by Michigan fans. For example, I've seen people make Tom Brady and Chad Henne comparisons, which is completely out of control. He is still two years away from even playing, and I'm afraid these expectations will be out of control by the time he actually is at Michigan.
I guess it's just the effect of what recruiting has become.

High expectations for Michigan quarterbacks aren't new. See: Henson, Drew.
February 21st, 2012 at 10:31 AM ^
Also it's expected Shane would see a doctor if he wasn't feeling well or else bad things would happen. See: Henson, Jim.

Or this one?
It could make a big difference in your health....
February 21st, 2012 at 10:09 AM ^
And more to the point, where did you see it?
February 21st, 2012 at 10:16 AM ^
I saw Tom Brady's first "garbage time" appearance. I wish I could say I knew he would go on to win three Super Bowls, but I would be telling a Urban Meyer-sized lie if I did. I remember telling the person I was with "he has potential, but looks a little stiff."
My point: it's too early for comparisons, but you never really know who is going to turn out to be great. I'm not ready to pronounce Shane Morris the GOAT, but I'm not ready to put a ceiling on him, either.
I'm willing to bet that there are slightly over 100 FBS schools who would hand him a scholly sight unseen, though.

He seems much smarter and down to earth than the Jimmy Clausens of this world, who roll up in limos with emo-spiked hair waving gang signs for press conferences. I like his attitude and his will to take it all in stride. Kid knows he has another full year to learn and prove more as well.

Did Shane really commit in May of 2010? Or does Angelique need to have a better proofreader?
February 21st, 2012 at 11:13 AM ^
Committed to Hoke.

he was the mysterious silent commit.

John Borton just posted a very comprehensive and insightful article on Rivals regarding Michigan's recruiting strategy & prospects by class (including 2013, 2014 and an early peek at 2015). I don't know if it's behind a paywall or free but it's an excellent read and potential future reference...

In the picture at the BBall game, Shane's dad looks an awful lot like Coach Hoke.
