The "Five of Diamond's" theory

Submitted by michelin on

On the scout board, there is an interesting discussion of Diamond’s apparent statement that he will “shock the world” tomorrow.   Is it bad news or is it a reference to the Fab Five (offensive line commitments at UM, if he comes).

I call this the “Five of Diamond’s” theory (ie the theory that Diamond  was referrring to the (Fab) FIve when he said he would shock the world.).   And if he picks UM, I will give him Michelin's FIve Diamonds award.

SCOUT BOARD

“Sam Webb interviewed Hoke yesterday at the WTKA Signing Day Extravaganza. And Webb asked Hoke about the possibility of landing any more kids. Hoke replied something like "a Texas sized piece and an Alaska sized piece". To me that says he means two large players. So obviously the staff is holding out hope for landing either or both of these kids.

Unfortunately I'm starting to get a feeling we land neither. Think I read on ******* last night that Jordan Diamond tweeted he's going to shock the world. Well going to Michigan will not shock anybody. So it would have to be a team people hardly expected him to go to. So that puts Auburn,Wisconsin and who knows? maybe even something crazy like OHIO. “

“Could it be that Diamond is referencing the fab five when Juwan Howard said they were gonna "shock the world"? He was also another Chicago boy. Diamond is going blue and Kozan is going Auburn... Book it.”

“I hope that's what he meant.”

A poster on the r*ivals board also takes the statement as a reference to the "Fab FIve" and believes that it is not only a good omen for UM.   As a member of a school that competes with UM, he regrets that it is now a foregone conclusion that Diamond will pick UM.”

“I thought something similar.... But he has kept things so close to the vest it is hard to really get a feel.”

“I think you're spot on here”

”He has been coy. But he also said at the beginning he was going to go thru the process. He took all his officials and yet he has been to UM like 6 times. I think this is a kid who was always going blue, yet he wanted to enjoy the trips plus get some exposure for his boys at Simeon High.”

I have my own theory* based on the early momentum that seemed to fade through the process.  Hoke has a really good idea of the kinds of kids he wants, he isn't going to indulge them, be flashy or play some flirtatious game.  It resonates quickly and deeply with those kids who have their heads screwed into the same socket as the coach.   Either the light goes on or it doesn't and those kids who drag it out still trying collect attention on various social media sites just ain't wired the same way as the head coach and the program.

It's possible that Diamond has known all along but extended the process for the good of his high school teammates but if I were asked to bet, I'd say Michigan won't be his choice.

*This is not necessarily applicable to future recruiting cycles.

Um, he's going to Michigan. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Diamond point at Brady Hoke at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

just accept that we have a kick ass class right now and tomorrow night will be a lesser blow. and remember to always trust the "experts" cause they are never wrong, just like with Garnett! lulz

To be correct, it was GLEN RICE who started the Shock the World phrase at Michigan basketball, not Chris Webber.

I’m also inclined to be pessimistic about Jordan Diamond joining his hometown friend Chris Bryant on UM’s Team 133; but if he really wants to "shock the world," Diamond should have three hats on the table in front of him – Army, Navy and Air Force, and then he can say he’s not going to college. He’s joining the armed services. Or put bags of food from some of the local fast-food franchises on the table in front of him and have him say, "I’m going to work at Taco Bell!"

Are high school athlete press conferences nearing their jump-the-shark point?  When are high schools going to be holding press conferences for cheerleaders, marching band members, mascots, valedictorians and National Honor Society members?

"OK, Coach Corso, Samantha's narrowed her mascot choices to Sparty, Brutus, Bucky, Goldie and the empty spot, and when the music stops while she's dancing around the table, she's going to pick . . . "

"Sorry Kirk, but it looks like Susie's leaving with Desmond."

Well if we listened to everyone else's opinions, we would have Garnett, and Grant. This stuff isnt always accurate, obviously. Also, how better to shock the world, than to put out there that Michigan has faded.

Diamond's friend and current UM FB team member--Chis Bryant--reported on twitter that he will be attending Diamond's announcement.  Would he travel all the way from AA to Chicago to attend a disappointing announcement?

Also, note what Diamond said AFTER his positive comments about an Arkansas visit. which made many think he would commit there  Diamond subsequently had a visit with Hoke and other UM coaches.  Here is what he said:

[The in-home with the Michigan coaches on Tuesday] was cool. It was three of them... Coach Hoke, Coach Funk, and Coach Hecklinski.  Everything went well.  We talked Michigan football, but [the part I liked most] was just the fact that they came down to the [house].  Coach Hoke came down and showed me some love.  That is really important.  He came down and we had a good conversation, we bonded, and we got a chance to know each other better.  We took a step forward.
