Q&A with a former Wolverine.

I'm a former student-athlete at Michigan... No I didn't play football but know quite a few people that did. Ask me Q's and I'll answer (within reason).

I have a serious one. When you are a varsity athlete at a school like Michigan, girls obviously like stuff like that. My theory is that ability to get females based purely on your status as an athlete goes as such:

1 A. Football - Star or not. Michigan is a football school and just saying you wear the winged helmet on saturdays is enough to get a handski even if you never play. X100 if you're a starter or NFL prospect.

1 B. Basketball - Nationally televised games, recent success. If you can't get laid while playing for the UM basketball team, turn your dick in.

2. Hockey - I'm biased, but the fact is, chicks dig hockey players. Michigan hockey may not get the attention like bbal or football, but fact is, a significantly higher percentage of Michigan hockey players go on to make money in their sport than football players do. X100 if you're a drafted NHL player.

3. Baseball

4. Soccer

5. Everything else.

I just came up with this crap, so I invite criticism and corrections. I've never been a varsity athlete so I'm curious to hear opinions.

While basketball players look normal on TV, many are freakishly tall in real life (Google "Pittsnogle wedding photos" if you don't believe me) and it limits the pool of gals they can realistically go after.  Same probably goes for dudes like BWC and RVB who scare off as many or more chicks than they attract by their sheer giantness.

Hockey players are (at least at Michigan) somewhat well known and all are generally normaly proportioned humans.  If most of them didn't prefer to stay home chugging Canadian beer and blowing farts into each other's faces, then laughing hysterically, they would definitely top the list as far as raking in the skooch goes.

I knew 2 or 3 BANGIN girls from the dorms who would definitely put out for hockey players but were otherwise total prudes. Might have just been because they were gumpy midwest girls, though.

Also, FWIW, I just watched the whole run of TPB and it's the best show I've ever seen.

Tutoring ranges from "lets organize your study schedule" to "what do you need to know about  organic chemistry"... I don't know of anyone that had someone write a paper or do homework for them, but the tutors were there to answer Q's and help. I utilized them a good bit, but i'd compare it more to going to office hours than just "getting answers."

Football, basketball, and hockey get catered stuff, only because their schedule and budget are different from the rest. Now, that's not saying other teams do not, but they are the most common.

Hi, Thanks a lot for taking questions!

I know some student athletes benefit from the help of paid private tutors (usually grad students I think). I was wondering if you knew whether this was a service that was offered as part of a scholarship contract, or what the official policy about that was. I'm pretty sure not every Michigan student can request to have a private tutor for free.

Thanks!

It's not "free" in the sense that they do not get paid, just that the athletic department pays them.  It's like extended office hours, because most professors and TAs are not available when most student-athletes are done with practice or available.

When I was a freshman, I saw Tom Brady checking his email in the Union basement a few times. This was before most people had their own laptop computers, let alone smartphones. God, I'm old.

PS. Anyone remember "telnet login.itd.umich.edu" or "telnet blue.engin.umich.edu"?

I remember telnet. And I was a junior when this horseless carriage called Wolverine Access came onto the scene - even though for that first year, you still had to call the CRISP lady to actually register.

My only quasi-brush with UM atheletic fame is that Charles Woodson almost knocked me down as he was exiting the front of the Union. It was nighttime and snowing, around finals time; I was going in to study and he was running out like he had to get to Pasadena or something.

When I was there (a pretty long time ago), I lived on the same floor with a bunch of the basketball players and would "help" with papers from time to time.

In response to an earlier question about the women, I was surprised by how well the offensive linemen did.  I went to spring break with a couple of them and it was insane.
