I think everyone is over analyzing this.

You're probably right.

I kind of really want those sunglasses now.

He can't hear football if he's wearing headphones.

Love this comment.

This comment is the poster child for the need of an "AWESWOME" moderation choice.

i noticed this too back when he was at san diego state. i guess he doesn't need it...after all he is the incredible hoke

Pointing w/ precise intent is more efficient.
September 4th, 2011 at 2:53 AM ^
Hoke is definitely not a figurehead.... He delegates playcalling to his coordinators, as it should be.
Did you ever see Tom Landry or Lombardi wearing a headset or even talking on a sideline phone in the pre headset days of the 60s? come on... its old skool
"What the Hell's Goin on out there....?""
btw... found plenty of Hoke-phones pics online from BState and SDSU
So yeah...at Michigan, when you are rocking 2 of the best coordinators in the biz... leave the headset off and let those guys do their gig...
It would be cool to see Coach Hoke in a Fedora though... photoshop anyone?
September 4th, 2011 at 9:46 AM ^
We need to get Hoke to wear a hat like Landry.
September 4th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
I really, really don't think the fedora is Brady's style.
That would look only slightly less out of place than a wave cap on Bielema.
September 4th, 2011 at 6:27 AM ^
Brady Hoke is head coach, not THE coach. It pays to have a good staff, right?
September 4th, 2011 at 8:13 AM ^
I was surprised he wasn't wearing his sunglasses during the storm. Gotta keep those tan lines.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:54 AM ^
He doesn't wear them all the time because he trusts the guys that work for him and make the calls. Took them on and off probably to discuss choices that the coaches were making. Frankly it is a breath of fresh air not to see someone micro managing their coordinators on the side line. Now if he can get better kickoff coverage that would really help!
September 4th, 2011 at 9:39 AM ^
At half-time, with the rain approaching, he had a chip implanted into his head that allowed him to communicate without the need for an actual headset...geez, was that so hard to figure out...
September 4th, 2011 at 9:56 AM ^
the beginning of the game but then dropped it when it started raining. Nuff said.

Michigan won handily. They didn't have to show very much for ND next week. Other than the first-half struggles, I don't think we could have asked for a better outcome.
I really don't understand quite what the OP is looking for here. If Brady Hoke doesn't feel he needs the headset all of the time, and the team is winning, it would probably be wise to trust his judgment.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:27 AM ^
I trust Hoke to know what he's doing. I am curious if what he does during the game goes roughly like this...
Provide overall direction, such as "A little more pressure on that kid, Greg". "Try running a bit more to the right, Al"
Then sits back without the headset and is just as much a spectator on a play by play basis as we are, with the added benefit of getting to slap helmets and chew ass ass needed from the players.

probably didn't want to electroshock his head in a thunderstorm...our coach is smart

Hahahah this is michigan

It's just a different style, not any better or worse than a coach who wears a headset the whole game. I also don't see a coach who wears a headset as a micromanager at all, it's just their style. If it were about micromanagment then 95% or college and pro coaches would be guilty. I think some of those comments are thinly veiled shots at the previous coach at Michigan who wore a headset, like the three coaches before him.
I looked at Google images of him and found a bunch of photos of him in the past wearing headsets so maybe he had some reason not to wear one most of the time. He may have been trying to get a feel for the teams attitude and intensity in their first game. It's probably hard to do when you have a headset on and people talking in your ear.
Again, just his style. Different isn't wrong or right, it's just different and it's also just 3 quarters of football so far.

On gameday Hoke is Beyonce right now. I figure he takes over defensive play calling once Mattison retires (or at least a more active role). Until then the defense is Mattison's baby and Borges is on the sideline so Hoke doesn't need a headset to talk to him.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:40 PM ^
You've got that backwards. Gorgeous Al Borges was in the booth and Mattison had a yellow ball cap on while making his presence known on the sideline.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:50 PM ^
I think his head may be too big.
September 4th, 2011 at 2:02 PM ^
I am not sure if this is the reason, but before the game I walked by an employee with a radio and over heard Hoke saying the radio equiptment was acting up. Not sure if it has anything to do with him not wearing a headset. I know I thought to myself oh boy, I hope this doesnt affect the game.

I'd rather him not wear one than be jim caldwell who doesn't need to wear one at all
