If only we could bring in the best O-line class in the nation...
August 29th, 2011 at 10:34 PM ^
Wasn't looking at it that way but totally see that now and agree.
I was just making fun of those types of fans who when a high ranked player commits elsewhere immediately disregard him as good or someone they wanted.
Good thing our OL recruiting is going well so far, and should even get better with the addition of Banner/Garnett/Diamond/etc

So I guess they view him more highly than Schutt?
August 29th, 2011 at 10:38 PM ^
yeah, I think he was #1 on the board going back to when he was offered, I mean outside of guys like goldman who never gave ND a look
August 29th, 2011 at 10:42 PM ^
Pretty swell class lining up; that front seven will be terrifying in a few years.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:45 PM ^
More than content at this point, it will be interesting to see what this does to Armstead. Could use another solid OLB still.

Fuck Notre Dame

Good to see IRISH commenting when good news comes out about ND. You'll never see him here for the bad.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:10 PM ^
I concur
August 29th, 2011 at 10:29 PM ^
Eh, not really surprised. I'm thinkin' they should switch to a 4-3 in the future. They've got some good D-linemen, and their effectivness seems limited in the 3-4.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
The defense played as much "even" as "odd" last season. I think they plan to continue that.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:30 PM ^
Their DL is gonna be sick the next few seasons. Doesn't help that our OL will be thin/young as well.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:35 PM ^
Magnuson, Kallis, Braden, Bars, and Stacey are the same year as Jones. And we'll likely add at least one more elite player on the OL. They'll be no younger than Jones.
Our OL is going to be pretty sick. I don't mind if they build up, as long as we build up better.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:40 PM ^
Wow you stole his thunder hardcore. That line looks pretty slick to me
August 29th, 2011 at 11:00 PM ^
They pulled in a nasty DL this past recruiting year as well. Plus, DL are more likely to contribute early than OL since most RS.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:31 PM ^
Kelly seems to really be recruiting heavily on the defensive side of the ball. Almost like he realizes that defense was the doom of Rodriguez and Weis. Plus he can put together a solid offense with less heavily recruited players. So he makes up for his defensive shortcomings by stacking the defense with good talent.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:34 PM ^
Exactly. He's on the record saying that he can manufacture offense, but needs to recruit defense. If only our last coach thought the same way. And hopefully our current coaches recruit similarly to their strenghts/weaknessess.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:36 PM ^
Well, at least they are doing with with the O-Line/QB. It remains to be seen if they can bring in some top notch RBs/WRs.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:35 PM ^
wow I thought he was a PSU lock good get for ND

rankings aren't all they're made out to be. When your coaching staff is happy, I could care little of what rivals grades the kid out as.
I like Jones because he was top 3 at least on ND's board from the moment he was offered; I have no idea if he's a 3, 4 or 5 star on any of the recruiting sites until I read Ace's post on the weekend.

Hey, not very familiar with your D, but where are all these DT's and DE's projecting? If I'm not mistaken, you run a base 3-4? Are y'all going for ridiculous depth, or are they looking to run more situational 4 down linemen stuff? Also, how many schollies do you guys have to give out this year?
August 29th, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
in this class - or ~ 7 more guys if every commit holds (which is just by the odds a slim chance). ND mostly looking for skill guys now and 1-2 more OL.
The DE thing is already sorting itself out as a lot of the DEs listed last year arent really DEs (Ishaq Williams, Ben Councell, Tony Springman, and I think either Rabasa or Carrico) there was a mix of DT, OLB and OL in that group. This year they seem to be filling the gap on true DL types, but I'm not sure all will end up at DE. I think thats part of the approach, to just take a lot of good athletes that can grow into/out of a number of positions in the front 7 or go to the OL.
Some of it too is that ND wants to have a DL where they can regularly rotate 6-7 guys, so you will see a blend of "every down" type guys, and some situation rush or space eating specialists in there also.
August 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
Lurking has most of it up there but there are 2 dlineman right now, Day and Jones. In ND's defense they view Day is an end who can shift inside if needed and Jones is a nose who can shift outside if needed

Schutt was on ESPN2 yesterday(?). He looked like a fat, slow tub of goo
August 29th, 2011 at 10:58 PM ^
More like Notre Lame
August 29th, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
Wow! Monster class for ND as well. They've been otrecruiting us the past couple of years and I far the results may show on the field...
August 29th, 2011 at 11:30 PM ^
Michigan's still rated more highly than ND on every site but Scout, which seems to have a hard-on for ND recruits. Could change going forward as I have no idea who their likely commits are going forward.
August 30th, 2011 at 6:53 AM ^
Could they down the road be switching to a 4-3 base with the additions of Day and Jones?
August 30th, 2011 at 10:21 AM ^
to Notre dame ?
