Very telling.
I don't really know much about ESPN's rankings. They're too weird for me. But are these out of 100? If so, the highest is 88? Is that normal?
Keep in mind that this is with a Michigan focus so the top prospect may not be listed here. But, yeah, ESPN ranks out of 100 and the highest scores are usually around 92/93/94.
And yet in basketball a mid-range 4 star recruit is usually in the mid 90's. Left hands, right hands, and all that.
As it relates to the current question, I've noticed if you go to a team's home page, you can see their recruits and their ratings, but if you go to the recruiting page, there is no rating next to each recruit. It's either poor web-master management or... poor web-master management.
No, I think they say that they rarely give out 90's scores though. Also it goes like to mid-low 70's and then jumps to 45 for unranked players. They may change as the year goes on. Also, a lot of these look a little low. 86 for DBG? He's gotta be one of those 90s rating players.
Also, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why we aren't recruiting Mahone as an RB. Anybody have an idea why? Would hate to see him go to PSU or MSU.
I would've expected someone like Goldman (DT) to be in the mid 90s
Eh, I keep finding that all these sites just vary wildly. Like when Will Campbell was a 5 star on Scout and Rivals, ESPN had him as a low 4 star (79) OT. ESPN also tends to rate those players playing in their UA all american game a bit higher.
I believe J. Clowney was their highest rated ever and he was a 95.
You are correct. They rarely give out 90s rankings.
Isn't Dorial Green-Beckham generally viewed as the #1 overall? He's only an 86, so are they implying this is a weak year?
No theyre implying its May, these kids have senior seasons to play and become more of a stand out.
There's at least one 88 there, so I think it implies that they don't think Green-Beckham is the #1 prospect.
Danny O'Brien at 78 is interesting.
IIRC, James Ross was supposed to be 99 like in old school Madden, dammit.
In the interview on ESPN Luginbell said they would get together and discuss the rankings in a few weeks-so i dont know what these are.
ESPN's rankings are out of 100, and are typically very bad, however rivals.com is just as bad this year. Rivals has decided to end their Midwest scouting department.
Stick to scout.com for both rankings and the second best Michigan football board (IMO).
ESPN page and scroll to the bottom they show the top commits and their ratings

NAME | POS | STATUS | GRADE |
---|---|---|---|
R. Jenkins-Stone | OLB | Verbal | 81 |
J. Bolden | ILB | Verbal | 80 |
D. Funchess | TE | Verbal | 80 |
J. Ross | ILB | Verbal | 80 |
P. Brown | DE | Verbal | 79 |
you nailed it but without the script above it
It will not let me edit to fix it. Sorry about that. It did not show up like that in the preview.
That rating has some differences to the list above-so not sure what this is all about- ross 80 and 79.
Checking out a few other schools to see how their recruits ranked, I saw that they gave a kicker who committed to FSU a 99. Now, either this is the most awesome kicker of all time, or something's wrong with their rankings.
Germain Ifedi, Trey Edmunds, Addam Griffith and a few others have a grade of 99
They only have RJS and Ben Braden listed as our two verbals.
Most of these rankings seem realistic though based on the Scout and 24/7 rankings. If ESPN comes out with these numbers than Rivals will really be out on their own island.
Last year, approximately half of ESPN's 79's got a fourth star. 85 was the cutoff for a 5th star.
Five-star player: 85 to 100
A potential immediate game-changer at the major college level who could push for all-conference recognition as a true freshman. Will enter college with elite skills needed to create mismatches against top-level competition. A future All-American candidate.
Four-star player: 79.5 to 84.99
A potential 3- to 4-year starter at the major college level with the superior skills needed to see early playing time and make a significant impact during his college career.
Three-star player: 75.0 to 79.49
A player with the skills to develop into a solid starter at the major college level. Potential high-ceiling prospect with the ability to make an impact during his career.
Two-star player: 68 to 74.99
A player who flashes developable major college talent and could be a late bloomer. Potential solid starter at the mid-major level.
One-star player: 55 to 67.9
Player does not show the physical tools or skill set at this point to project at the major college level, but could contribute at mid-major or FCS programs.
New guy coming through in the clutch...thanks!
ESPN generally expands their list of five stars as the year goes on, but not by much. Normally it's around 12-15
Wormley seemingly getting more love from espn than from the other lists that came out this week.
Again, I'm not sure they intended to release these yet - could be a test on the mobile site in prep for publishing. It's public in any case. I'm going to add in additional comments, so the post doesn't get any longer.
