Ah, so those paying attention new about it already. Very well; I'm not prize worthy after all, but I'm still drinking the whiskey.

I feel like I should win a prize for being the first one to point that out. I am therefore awarding myself a shot of James Oliver Rye.

Wait, is that Carl Grapentine doing the intro over the theme music?

I, for one, am never invested in Notre Dame being good.

07/13/2018 - 11:44am I don't even see the option…

I don't even see the option to up or down-vote, and haven't since the site update. Did the voting threshold get raised?

05/31/2018 - 3:54pm I do feel for the opposing

I do feel for the opposing players to some extent, but a bunch of private schools complaining about financial inequity in athletics is, if you'll excuse the pun, awfully rich. Especially in Baltimore.

03/07/2018 - 4:32pm Short time

1. He only left 5 years ago

2. He was only here for 2 years

3. He didn't win the national title (I know, I know)

Yes, he brought the first legit banners in ages, but I think if you're retiring a jersey for a guy who only stayed 2 years that guy should have brought you multiple conference titles or final fours or a national title or been an all-American both years. Splitting hairs, I admit, but those ar my criteria. Also, schools generally wait a while before retiring numbers.

02/21/2018 - 3:24pm Since people are asking for evidence

On Jews and the media (retracted after an attempt to deny before the Nixon tapes were made public):…

On AIDS being divine retribution (retracted):…

More of his words on the gay community:…

“Let me say this loud and clear, we traffic in homosexuality at the peril of our spiritual welfare.”

I'm sure he also helped a lot of people, but he did so while denigrating countless others in broad, bigoted strokes.

12/14/2017 - 11:36am Interesting

BTN2Go is decent for me in Ann Arbor, but FoxSportsGo is a disaster. It doesn't buffer so much as it jumps forward and backward constantly. I end up re-watching parts of a game and then it jumps live and I've missed something. By far the worst streaming app I've ever used. I wonder why there's such a difference in performance.

12/14/2017 - 10:59am This is disappointing for 2 reasons

1. I'm not a big fan of megacorporations

2. I was hoping that this deal might mean getting BTN's and FOX's streaming apps up to the level of WatchESPN, but it doesn't sound likely.

In conclusion, boo.

11/28/2017 - 3:19pm I thought maybe he would be

I thought maybe he would be less forcefully on brand since it wasn't a traditional media appearance. I was wrong.

I don't think he's necessarily a bad guy (the NCAA is worse than he is, at least), but the image of piety he projects doesn't sit well with me.

11/17/2017 - 4:57pm Tom Slade

I went to Tom Slade's funeral and saw Bo there. Next day he was gone, too, and Michigan hasn't been the same since.

10/05/2017 - 10:21am Yeesh

This is the 2012 game edition of this feature.

Side note: I really can't believe how consistently bad the State News columns are every year. It's like Bobby Williams is the their editor-in-chief.

08/19/2017 - 6:59pm Good Stuff

My biggest worry about Viper is WR screens. Peppers's ability to avoid blocks and time his surge into the backfield for a TFL was uncanny, and removing those plays from opponents' playbooks was huge.

08/15/2017 - 2:28pm Godwin's law

I don't think Godwin's law can apply when the topic at hand is Nazis already.

07/20/2017 - 10:57am Forgot about that one

Odessa steps, man. What a film.

07/20/2017 - 10:45am Tough call

Metropolis is incredible, but it's loooong. My favorite is probably City Lights. Honorable mentions to the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Mel Brooks' Silent Movie. The 2005 film The Call of Cthulhu was well done, too.

06/16/2017 - 6:42pm Powers

Ricky Powers was a really good back, but sadly my only specific memory of him is fumbling against Illinois in 1993.

05/04/2017 - 8:40pm Movie Sign With the Mads

I really enjoy Movie Sign With the Mads. It's Frank and Dr. Forrester from the old MST3K along with Carolina Hidalgo, and they pick a movie each week (they do both new and classic films) and talk about it.

04/18/2017 - 5:35pm Music

Nice to hear some Billy Strings and Don Julin on the podcast! Awesome Michigan bluegrass.

03/29/2017 - 12:02pm Yes and no

I agree that Baumgardner's writing style is...not the cleanest, but his analysis is pretty solid in my opinion.  His Monday columns after football games were full of good stuff about specific plays and players.  He does tend to spout cliches at times, but he backs them up with actual numbers and analysis.  Brian mentioned in a column once that he does way more than the average local beat writer and I agree.  He and Quinn are great together on the podcast, too.

Phantom touchdown redux - Carlyle Holiday fumbled the ball at the 1 and was awarded a touchdown.

03/10/2015 - 6:11pm I've got you covered. I live

I've got you covered. I live in Ypsi and have a mic, stand, and powered mixer you can use. Do you need anything other than just me showing up at like 3:30?

02/17/2014 - 7:25pm Question

I always put two spaces after a period and am a fanatical supporter of the Oxford Comma. How do these affect my chances?

01/29/2014 - 9:38pm Oh yeah!

Gargamel is PISSED tonight.

12/30/2013 - 12:00pm There it is

Let's hope the Fords go with the obvious move here - Art Shell.

10/19/2013 - 12:08pm I thought it was a mini Ditka

Bears, 79-zip

05/28/2013 - 3:39pm I liked Beckmann a lot more

I liked Beckmann a lot more when I was 12 years old and knew nothing about him.

04/24/2013 - 10:36pm Still bitter

He'll fax in his refusal for the use of his likeness on the eve of the game's release.

04/10/2013 - 3:42pm Thank you!

I am constantly impressed by the dedication of our staff and  volunteers (nearly 6,000 different people annually) to the mission.  I have never been a part of a workforce like this and I consider it a privilege be involved.

I suddenly feel I should point out that I'm not on the clock right now.

04/10/2013 - 3:06pm As a Food Gatherers employee

I can confirm that we did get subs and it was indeed crazy.  Major thanks to Subway!  With the help of our partner agencies we have already distributed several hundred subs to the hungry folks in Washtenaw County.

03/11/2013 - 3:53pm Yes.

03/09/2013 - 10:06am Yep

The giveaway of it being made-for-TV is the font used for the credits is the same one used for every TV show/movie for something like a 10 year span back then.

You can really see hints of Jaws in that film, not to mention hints of Spielberg's face in the car's rear view mirror.

03/09/2013 - 9:49am I'm a classics buff

Among my well-known favorites:
The Maltese Falcon
The Sting
A Night at the Opera
City Lights
Touch of Evil

Some lesser-known ones:
The Big Heat
High and Low
Red Beard
The Stranger

02/27/2013 - 9:08pm Wild Turkey

101, though I could go for Booker's about now.

02/09/2013 - 2:29pm Like, the whole bag at once?

Or each dick individually?

02/08/2013 - 10:45am No

02/08/2013 - 9:40am Wow

Those deer antlers really work!

12/04/2012 - 7:50pm Mascot

Will the mascot be coated with crude oil?

(Too soon?)

11/18/2012 - 2:21pm The Buckeye Mutiny?

I know you said peaches not strawberries, but I'm now picturing Gordon Gee as Captain Queeg.

EDIT - Meant as a reply to RedGreene. Crap.

10/21/2012 - 11:30am After the spike

Denard was not smiling, just completely fired up with a nasty look in his eye. That may be the first time I've ever seen him like that.

10/21/2012 - 11:18am That was fishy.

And then there was Toussaint catching a poorly thrown swing pass for a loss of 1 when he should have dropped it to stop the clock. We had to burn our last timeout as a result. Hard to expect that of a player in that situation, though.

10/20/2012 - 10:30pm Since you started the spelling/grammar nazi routine

His name is Dantonio, not D'Antonio, and he is a good coach, but he's also been nothing but a condescending jackass and he deserves every bit of butthurt he's getting.

09/29/2012 - 8:59pm I don't know

The WVU-Baylor game was like watching a baseball game with no strikeouts and a bunch of errors. I like some sound defense at least a few times a game.

09/27/2012 - 12:17pm Whoops

You're right of course. Not sure what I was thinking there.

09/26/2012 - 6:38pm History

It's mostly a rivalry of historical significance, which admittedly doesn't mean a whole lot in the here and now. I think for Notre Dame it's about several things. There's the bitterness from when Michigan refused to play them for 35 years and there's always being second-best in all-time wins behind the school that they've tried to mimic for well over a century, and still not having been to a BCS bowl.

For me it's about a lot of things. Private v. Public schools, Big Ten/Midwest v. their quasi-independent status and national footprint, the sanctimonious words of guys like Paul Hornung ("ND needs to lower it's academic standards in order to get the black athlete"), and preferential treatment from the NCAA, BCS, and now ACC (and they still haven't made a BCS bowl!)

I suppose it is mostly just another game that gets more attention due to the history behind it, but I'm with Brian - they're the perfect foil.
