OT: What music are you listening to?

Submitted by Magnus on February 20th, 2019 at 1:09 PM

It's a slow day, so I'm going to bring back an oldie but a goodie:

What music are you listening to lately? I'm a music nut and I'm always curious about where I can expand my horizons. These are the artists/albums I've been listening to lately

Pedro the Lion's new album "Phoenix"
Geoff Farina's "The Wishes of the Dead"
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats self-titled album
Kids See Ghosts self-titled release
Weezer's "Teal Album"

Great band.  We have been listening to them for a couple of years now.  Caught them in Baton Rouge a few times before they were well known.  My son actually met a few of the band members as well and said they were nice guys.  We are looking forward to seeing them in concert again in less than 2 months!

Mostly Latin music.

For rap, I've been feeling a lot of the autotune crooners lately: YNW Melly, A Boogie, some Rodeo Travis Scott. Then mixed with a lot of Tee Grizzley and Meek when I'm working out/in a worse mood lol.

Somehow I have a hard time seeing Frank listening to Rap.  LOL

But I am a hypocrite, as I am 44 and still listen to Hardcore Metal and still mosh and headbang.

Current Favorite Band:

Not for the faint of heart.  My wife calls it my "angry music".  But she is only 32.  What does she know?  (hides)

for extra credit and the admiration of mgobloggers all over the globe, i would encourage those who respond to add a link to the music they say they are listening to.  much more likely for others to 'lend an ear', so to speak, and maybe get interested in it.

just a thought.  carry on.

I’m a big fan of multi-channel music.  The 5.1 DVD-audio version of this song is awesome.  The thunder clap at the beginning will rattle the room if you have a good subwoofer.  In general, all of the 5.1 mixes of Yes’ music are very good.

I’be been listening to the 5.1 mix of Jethro Tull’s Passion Play and Jimi Hendrix’ Electric Ladyland.

His new album is much different but it’s grown on me.  The idea of a psychedelic country album forced me to listen to it a few times and I think it will age well.  Maybe I’m just excited about the idea of a country artist making something different and giving the finger to the pop country that I can’t fucking stomach but after letting it settle I think it will be remembered as his greatest album simply because he took some big chances and ultimately established himself as an artist that is going to defy convention.

I will say that the two songs that are in my regular rotation are from his earlier work.  “Call to Arms” and “You Can Have the Crown” are jams but “Turtles All the Way Down” isn’t far behind.

I didn't hate, I just didn't love all the stylistic choices he made. I also hate the modern pop country, and have always liked his country/rock style. Call to Arms was definitely my favorite on that album.

Ultimately I think MSCM will be remembered as his best, and I'd have Sailor's Guide to Earth last. There are so many bangers on MSCM: Turtles All The Way Down, Long White Line, Life of Sin, It Ain't All Flowers, Just Let Go. Whole album is fantastic.

Few new 2019ers: (as a good request from XM, here's a few links to some songs from said albums).  Also, I got into 80s stuff years back and am always listening to and even discovering stuff from back then.  The past week or so I've been dabbling again into some Echo and the Bunnymen (Seven Seas is great), The Jesus and Mary Chain, Public Image, and Orange Juice (Rip it Up).  Also also, Big Country - Big Country has been in my head for about 2 weeks now and I've not a fucking clue as to why.

Deerhunter - Why Hasn't Everything Already Happened

Sharon Van Etten - Remind me Tomorrow

Swervedriver - Future Ruins

Wow, I actually got these to embed, though if you watched a timelapse of my post you'd see many edits and screw ups over the course of 7 minutes!

My 3yo has insisted on listing to "Get Back" every night before he goes to sleep.  I've come to the determination that Ringo's snare triplets should have been reserved for the third verse, whereas the first two verses should have had a regular back beat.

Pink Floyd "Wish you were here"

Montrose "Montrose 1"

Supertramp "Crime of the century"

I've never heard of your stuff either FWIW......
