OT- Huge fricking earthquake and tsunami

Submitted by BiSB on

In case you hadn't heard, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Honshu, the main island in Japan, this morning.  It triggered a tsunami that is heading east across the Pacific, and has apparently already struck Hawaii (they had a lot of warning, so loss of life should be minimal). It also swept much of the Japanese coastline well inland of the coast.

Hundreds are already reported dead, and severe damage was reported as far away as Tokyo.  I think I speak for the entire MGoCommunity when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with those in Japan.

In Korea now, and I've heard several people in cheering or seen them smiling watching this news.  There is still so much hatred towards Japan b/c of their occupation and enslavement in the first half of the 19th century.  It's sad and disgusting to see... but there it is, human psychology and behavior.

I was in an American history course that had some students from Korea. When we touched on World War II, and specifically the nuclear bombings, the professor took a tone that suggested maybe we went too far. After the class ended the Korean students went up to him to make the case that we didn't go far enough with it.

This is a quote using ABC words, so it's obviously not an official scale of concern, but when they say "The reactors are one of their biggest concerns" that is terrifying after seeing the videos coming out of there.

Wow.  Yesterday, I read an article on Yahoo! that said something about the moon being closer to the Earth that it has in some odd number of years, and it went on to say something about increased volcanic activity and earthquakes wasn't out of the question.

And then this happens...

Obviously, my thoughts go out to these people.

Kick me in the ass next time I complain about a little snow. Michigan's not do bad, all things considered. Horrible to see all those lives wiped out.
