Follow up question....

Wiscy has three players leading Clay, the FB, the ROG (no.70??) and the TE/HB (no.84)we have Roh taking on the FB, Brown on the pulling OL, but who is supposed to take the TE/HB?? In this particular play the HB sorta doubles Brown (who is already engaged effectively by the pulling guard) but looks like he will be the lead blocker if Clay takes its outside. So even if Ezeh was flowing like everyone expects him to he has a good chance of being blocked by the HB (assuming Clay sees Ezeh near the E gap hole with a chance to plug it and decides to take it outside behind the HB).

The only player who is unblocked is Smith and he has to flow all the way from the backside to tackle. IS this a "their rock to our scissors" type where we are not in a sound formation to defend this?? OR can Smith, with his speed, actually close in faster and make a play since the RB needs time to make his read and decide on the hole? Warren, who is the deep guy, eventually makes a stop after 10/11 yards. Thanks.

You can check out Defranco training

Joe is great at designing "block periodization" schemes.....very effective in building speed and strength...his articles on "Westside for Skinny Bastards" are extremely useful in becoming a better athlete/individual!!

http://www.defrancostraining.com/index.php

check out his "articles" and "ask Joe" features!!

Parisi is also a good place to get info, you could also visit "elitefts.com" for more help, they have various experts posting on strength training!!

Tom Beaver actually brought it up

on the scout premium boards or in his blog...this filtered into the "Victors Board" and other open M boards. The allegations were pretty serious...Beaver suggested that there might fractions within the AD that are not "in sync" with Rod and that Carr still held sway with them. This was all Beavers assertions.....dunno whether these were his opinions or reality.

Seems kinda fucked up if these are true, we are like 12 months into the new regime and apparently the old cats are still in play.

Norm Chow and USC

Brian, this is from a guy who is a USC expert, he knows his shit, i have already linked this page before but here goes,

http://www.trojanfootballanalysis.com/chow_file.html

Check his out the article, scroll midway to find the relevant portion. Lane Kiffin might not be Pete Carroll or Charlie Weis (haha!) but he certainly was not just a "didn't screw up Norm Chow's Offense" guy either. I don't want this place to run with "the common wisdom thing"!

According to ESPN

Monte is joining his son at Tennessee!!, we have to see if this indeed happens. Should be real interesting if it does though.....Carroll cut his teeth under Monte at Arkansas and Minnesota (NFL) and swears by the "4-3 under front" that Monte ran back in teh day (and still does i guess), Carroll is not that much of a cover-2 guy though.

Kiffin is a good young hire

He, along with Steve Sarkisian were also one of the main cogs of the USC offensive machine, not just Norm Chow as its widely believed. Kiffin and Sarkisian were the ones who came up with the "new" USC offense, Trojans ran Chow's "BYU offense" in 01 and had "spectacular" results. Carroll said no way, junked the BYU stuff and consulted with Alex Gibbs and Gruden. Chow was still the one that called the plays on game day but much of the preparation, tendency charting and game planning were on Kiffin's and Sarkisian's shoulders.

IT was also rumored that Ed Orgeron was also a part of the Kiffin deal, The Orge is a ruthless recruiting machine and a good D coach. Kiffin's O prowers and good enough recruiting connections make him a attractive choice.

Also, Lefty was supposed to have spent time with the USC coaching staff prior to the 06 season learning about passing schemes and formations, Carr was pulling a Carroll 02 and it almost worked!!

Here is the article talking up Kiffin, scroll to the mid part of the article where they talk about 01 and 02 seasons

Gsimm made a point about

the Lbs not jumping these ultra short 2-3 yard routes...something along the lines of "not fucking the ugly Sally" or something in his blog a while back!!!! We are okay trying to tackle some dude who has got 2 yards on 2 and 9 (he might still get a first down with our iffy tackling but......) rather than tackling a dude with a 10 yards reception in the same situation.

Maybe Michigan

does not have the athletes that Stan and Louisvile have!  Or maybe the other kids can tackle better! But its all on the kids. After three more games, we will rid ourselves of three or possibly 4 of the current underachieving DL starters, one member of the immensely underachieving LB corps, three members of our monumentally underachieving  DB corps. And we will replace them with kids with less than a year's starting experience and  "We will make plays"!!

Our scoring drives

overall consumed about 14 mins. Their drives consumed about 22 mins. part of it was us scoring 3 tds on big plays (punt, minor 45 yarder and Stonums 51 yarder) and the rest was our inability to get them off the field. It was quite unusual to see us getting killed by some unknown dude, who was nothing special out of HS (you can check out his profile on scout and rivals, his senior stats are quite comparable to our  dual threat guy Feagin!!, with offers from only purdue, indiana and Il)and surrounded by mediocre supporting cast.

Now, either he is god and will continue to do so, or he played well only against us and would fail to replicate this success. The remaining teams on their schedule are State, Iowa and Indiana. State's D is average, Iowa's D agian is not stellar when you take out Maine and Fl intl, while Indiana's d is actually comparable to ours!!

Coach Bt and co at GBMW blog

are putting out the shizzle on the 3-3-5 stuff, according to them Shafer is sailing in choppy waters, FWIW!!

At least we get kittens (well a cat in this case) back on the blog!!

What's deal on DEs?

Are Sam Montgomery and Joe Ankrah even in the board anymore?? I guess JOsh Robinson at CB also seems like a nice get if he choose's us, i have heard that he might be looking good, you have anything new on him?

If Dequinta Jones is wavering and with us still not official with Big Will, are the staff on the look out for DTs? There seems to be nohting out there to suggest we are doing so. We are very thin at DT for next year, but if we are gonna make the move to the stack for good, then it migth not matter.

Thanks!

Beaver reporting Rod's presser (pertinent points )

HT : Victor's Board

  • Coach Rod was upset
  • It's frustrating, they were trying to make plays in space on defense, but they couldn't.
  • They have switched to the 3-3-5 stacked defense ...
  • Justin Siller - they expected exactly what they saw, that he'd run around, make plays with his legs and his arm.

If we are truly moving over to a stack...well this is a clear case of desperation on the part of Rod. This might be the end of the dream of top 100 DL recruiting!!

Nitpick

RVB is a RFr this year and hence will have soph eligibility next year!!

Hawkins to announce this Thursday

http://michigan.scout.com/a.z?s=162&p=2&c=805981

Fingers crossed!

Who was the last

big time (scholarship not walk on) player to play for Michigan from one of the local schools. I think it was Tabb from Huron or was he from Pioneer??

Anyway, always wanted to know how our local schools stacked up with rest of the state..but somehow never bothered, my close firend was a pitching coach for the Rats....have been to a few of their games.. like a couple of years ago!

Also Spoon's out at Rutgers

Apparently he didn't qualify there either!!

Miller's Comments

I saw this stuff over at Victor's so FWIW, apparently all the talk on  scout $ boards have been about Miller's prediction of a couple of more stunners during the "Lil Brah" week....don;t exactly know who's visiting during that week but apparently Fl S Marvin Robinson and Fred Jackson's kid are locks...at least for the time being!! Fingers crossed!!

TOP

We had the ball like 4.30 and 5.20 in the first 2 quarters. Second half was slighlty better, overall Wiscy had 12 odd mins adv. So that's little less than a whole quarter!!

Yup stuff about the 500 th game. Apart from that 46 yard Clay run...our D held up pretty good in the first half 190 odd yards (111 running and 80 odd passing) considering the absolutely horrendous situations that they were put in by our O. We were gashed pretty good on the last two drives..but that was a function of being on the field for a loong time and also the balant tackling of our Dl by Wiscy's OL....i mean it was really ridiculous to see on TV..WTF refs, i am surprised that they even called that ineligible downfield on Beckum. And on PJ's screen/swing 20 yard run there a balant clip on Thomopson/Mouton that was not called ..hello refs and that got the last drive started for Wiscy!

Ehh..we won so fuck it...we gave up 380 some yards (158 on ground and 226 passing, with 4sacks for loss of 20)

It can't get any worse than last year

Threet is about equal or slightly better than Mallett was at madison last year, DL should be better but LB stays the same, Safeties are worse, CBs are about even since its the same two dudes. WRs are worse, RBs maybe be better overall due to Sam I am's emergence and Hart's gimpy wheel last year. OL is worse, but we have better OC and ST play should be better than last year's.

So..... we get like 17 points on O, 1 score from a D/ST combo (short field scenario) so 20 or 24. Scony gets like 21 in the first half and get two FGs in the second...and yes i don;t expect M to repeat the same mistakes (TOs) that we made at Madison last year (Mallett was bad) and at SB the week before last.

27 - 21/24 Wiscy wins!! If LB safety play improves feel free to flip the scores (yes we might pull it off)

J.B. Fitzgerald

How about getting JB to play Mike, him being an athletic and "natural" Mike and all, and push Ezeh to Sam. This was what they were doing in fall practice initially right, but made the switch to get our best players!! in or something to that effect. IN fact Thompson was considered to be more of a run stuffer, while Ezeh was the more athletic one!!

I shudder to even think about Wiscy running play action on first and ten, with Beckum releasing and running through the seam unmolested and "oh wide open"!!

Warren deep ball PI

Well it was a BS call but what i want to hear form the coaches present here is the safety play. The coverage shell looks exactly like what it was on the Tate bomb, Brown a little shallow and Harrison a little deeper, but the CBs are presssing. On snap the both safeties move up suspecting run and get caught looking in the backfield for a longtime, only when Emu steps up to throw does Brown, who seems to be the deep safety, gets ready to fly back to the deep pattern.

Question is, are our safeties so susceptible to play fakes (slow to get back in coverage) or are they forced to do this due to all the cleaning up they have done on the run plays due to poor LB play (these two cases were early in the game so....) Methinks this is a little of the latter and a lot of the former.

And what was Mouton doing on that play

He was on mixing it up with Sam Young, while the play was going away from him...was he responsible for backside pursuit??? Looks like he just ran right up to RT and engaged him for nothing. If he hadn't done that then he could have had the cut back lane, right next to Taylor, covered (at least until Young came out to him or he could have doubled Graham along with the RG) and Ezeh could have flown to the ball carrier as was mentioned  (still this view seems far fetched considring the ILB has to flow all the way out)...dunno what the call was!

Based on current commits

What's the projection on the number of scholarships for this year...anybody. I remember Brian or maybe the GBW blog guys saying 21/22 or maybe even a full class if a few move on/are not invited back!!

Campbell plus a OL a LB (Jenkins) DE  (montgomery/Ankrah) and Thames or Gordon would be a real good finish. If we can reel in Hawkins it would be even better!

Will Johnson and 4-3 Over

If he is seriously getting doubled most of the time and has trouble holding up, while Taylor is up to the task...why not play "4-3 under" defense, where the 3-tech (Will Jon in teh above play) is to the weakside and the 1-tech NT is to the strongside with the strongside end in 5-tech and the SAM is near or on LOS in a 9-tech. The 3 tech DT can never get doubled..while the NT in our case seems strong enough to hold up.

Thoughts?

Summer 05

I quit posting for a while this summer, right before the blog transition, primarily due to the increase in "noise" now things are slightly better.  Stumbled upon this site through IBFC!!! so Vijay is responsible for my procrastination at school these past 3 years!!

The first post that i read was the good old "recruiting philosophy"!! Whatever happened to that turd sandwich Emfinger?

Cover Three

Trent Harrison and Warren could have been the ones on 3 deep, and since there was no immediate threat for Warren he hung out near LOS (GSimm agrees as well) Or it could have been cover two or 2 read (cover 4 right??) with Trent and Harrison up top and Warren and Brown playing teh flats or robbing the short routes. And by the "slip" i believe you are referring to one when Trent looks like he might have slipped (noticed it only after your comment) once he begins to go vertical chasing after Tate, right??

Harrison can be blamed only if it were 2 read/3roll as he was late rolling to his third (which was more to his right, in between the hashes) If it were cover 2 he was in his half and expecting him to cover up for Trent's screw up is kinda harsh!! My 2 cents.

Sweet

You the man!!

About three roll

What is warren's role in this coverage? Is he playing man, cause he is at the LOS (like your kids did in the option dive pass), then that would mean we ran man to strong side and zone on weak side, with the only WR lined up on weakside (wideside??). Or if he is  playing zone, shouldn't he have bailed (or you don;t ask the kids to that if there is no visible threat)?

Either way Harrison seems to be real late in rolling to the middle (your kid got in there in a hurry) he started drifting but was caught peering into the backfield. What is the read for the deep safety? i would assume its not "take a look at the action in the backfield" and more like "get your ass back there as soon as you can"!!!  Seems like the rotating safety always is a little slow (at least in the ones we get to see because of a screw up) The clip at Varsity Blue shows this in excruciating detail)

Thanks Gsimm, i know "beating a dead horse" and all but come on ..one man bomb against the Domes and Jimmah....seriously!!!

It still is a little confusing

That's why i commented over at VB and also had a little talk with you at your
blog!!Almost have half a mind to write to Shafer, what this being a bye
week and all!!
