never not douchey. EVER, and that has nothing to do with this interview, because whatever.
|3 days 21 hours ago||erase this game...||
...i remember the day of that ohio state game like it was yesterday.
my brother was a manager for the team that year and i got his parent tickets for that game. i had to stop at his house to pick them up before the game, and one of his roommates had three or four of his buddies up from ohio state visiting. they were, as you might expect, whooping it up, drunk, stupid, and loud, giving points and talking shit about how great this group of buckeyes was, right there on my brother's couch at 10:30 or so in the morning. i tried to poke back, but it was like arguing with a group of juggalos, so i grabbed the tix and took off for blue-er pastures.
so we kicked their asses all afternoon, and i headed back to my brother's house on john street. there those gigantic assholes sat, in the same places on the couch where i'd left them, sad, drunk tired and with the most beautiful blank shellshocked looks on their faces i'd ever seen, as if they'd just watched the michigan marching band director screw their mothers. WHICH HE PROBABLY DID.
it was a great day.

|1 week 4 days ago||argh.||
i refuse to just shrug my shoulders and say "everyone does it" or "hey, that's recruiting nowadays" or anything of the sort. yes, decommits happen. the "better opportunity" and "closer to home" things? ok, yeah, i get it. guy got hurt and got blown off? grayshirt? yuck and yuck. we'd be killing just about anyone else in the country for stuff like that.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||that feels like a perfect analogy to me||
when a great pitcher loses his fastball, he can still get people out by changing speeds and hitting spots, but it gets harder and harder for him to completely dominant for long stretches by blowing people away.
that's how it feels with red the last few years. at one point he could just put out wave after wave of super-talented kids, but he doesn't retain them the way he used to, and while we can still get on hot streaks, we can't dominate for long stretches any more.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||the obvious response...||
...to the "does not benefit student athletes" line is a very simple two-word phrase, those two words being "Fuck" and "You." Athletic Directors and the NCAA could not care less about "student athletes;" if they did, their policies would treat them as something other than indentured servants.
The line about the pros using college sports as minor leagues is ridiculous, too. They do, of course, but I fail to see how it's a whole lot different than the colleges exploiting their athletes to get multi-billion dollar TV contracts.

...makes me extraordinarily happy.
we get all involved in wins and losses here, but we can't ever forget this other stuff. he got his degree, and he's a successful outcome for this program, whether or not he goes somewhere else or ever plays beyond college.
don't forget, either, that the coach he signed for got canned a few weeks after he committed, and he stuck it out, because he liked the school.
i wish him the best.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||argh||
crap, you beat me to it.
this gif - as much or more than any play he made on the field - is what made me love denard so much. he threw himself into being a student here as much as any starting quarterback ever did. the guy went to hockey games!!!
|7 weeks 3 days ago||bummer.||
still a michigan man, i wish him the best.
|7 weeks 4 days ago||i hope...||
...to GOD that the two 'bro' comments are hawkeye references. please make it so.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||No problem here.||
totally fine with this.
|12 weeks 6 days ago||green bay is a good job.||
dick bennett was there for 11 years before he took over at wisconsin, tod kowalczyk was tehre for 8 years before taking over at toledo, brian wardle just parlayed it into a job at bradley. oh, and former um women's coach kevin borseth left ann arbor for green bay in 2012, which speaks pretty highly of their athletic department.
it's a good job, and he's ready. hope he goes there, tears holy hell out of the horizon league, and comes back here when beilein retires.
i'm worried about lavall jordan leaving, too. that guy's ready, and he MAKES point guards.
we're going to miss both those guys when they're gone.
|14 weeks 3 days ago||in beilein we trust, man.||
with or without levert, this team will be a wrecking crew a year from now.
a few years ago edsbs described lsu football as a gorilla with a chainsaw for a penis. that's both funny as hell and possibly applies to um men's hoops, 2015-16
|15 weeks 3 days ago||i don't know about that...||
...again, i don't know diddly, but the mere existence of non-competes tells me that it's not as cut and dried as "your boss can't tell you shit." that and the fact that there is apparently some legislation being underway to end it outright tells me that there's at least some enforceability.
i don't think it's a huge stretch to say that signing a letter of intent and / or accepting a scholarship to a member school should limit your free agency somewhat.
note that i'm not arguing whether the entire loi / scholarship system (or for that matter the mere existence of the ncaa as a 'governing' body) is valid in the first place.
|15 weeks 3 days ago||well,||
i would only point out that non-compete clauses in contracts are extremely common, to the point that jimmy john's (jimmy john's!!!) has non-competes for its sandwich makers:
i think you can make a case that signing a letter of intent and agreeing to accept a scholarship is a form of a non-compete.
i would also point out that i have literally zero legal insight or knowledge, so this may be utter gibberish on my part.
|15 weeks 3 days ago||dumb question||
is this the same rule that allows grad transfers? is that rule affected? i'm not a compliance guy, i honestly have no idea.
immediate-eligibility transfers (grad or undergrad) always strike me as pretty cheesy. one of the reasons i love college sports over the pros is the whole 'rooting for laundry' / mercenary aspect of the pros. i can talk myself into believing (rightly or wrongly) that college players have some primal connection to their schools...these types of transfers tear some of that down for me.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||it's completely different.||
cable systems don't let you do ala carte programming. period. if you want just espn or just hbo you have to get the entire cable package.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||go girls go||
it's a nice program we've got going here. kim barnes arico has recruited very well; we should continue to be solid to very good.
interestingly, the sparty women, who finished with similar results this season, turned down the postseason. i think they were down to eight players at year end due to injuries.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||timeouts, timeouts, timeouts.||
'megalomaniacal coaches.' exactly.
this week, at least three coaches will call timeouts before the 16 minute tv timeout after a couple of quick turnovers, or after having given up three three-pointers. book it.
|16 weeks 1 day ago||feeling good||
can't wait to see this team next year.
|16 weeks 2 days ago||in beilein we trust, man.||
...the lightbulb has clearly flashed on for zak irvin. if we can get some improvement (and not even a lot) from chatman and a couple of others next season, we could be awfully scary.
|16 weeks 3 days ago||best of luck to him.||
i'm sure he'll be a great representative of the university and the program.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||well, yeah...||
...not sure how you can read the phrase "if hackett has the stones to make the change now" any other way.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||okay, i'll ask...||
...is this a bad idea?
he seems to have been able to identify young talent, has presided over a transitional period in detroit without them bottoming out, seems like a standup guy...
pearson would be my first choice today, but i don't think i'd complain about babcock.
|18 weeks 3 days ago||oh, good heavens.||
the most comment board-ey comment ever.
yes, let's try to figure out his "emotional engagement" based on a flipping press conference.
|18 weeks 3 days ago||+1||
i literally could not agree more.
don't equate press conference persona with anything other than press conference persona.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||is it time yet?||
i think we're supposed to freak out about lack of specific answers on every single question posed, right? "we had a good practice" isn't good enough, right? oh, wait. that was the last guy.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||in beilien we trust.||
"it's becoming easier and easier to see what John Beilein envisioned when he recruited these guys"
man, oh man, how many times have we said essentially that same thing since bill martin hired this guy?
|20 weeks 2 days ago||just so i'm clear here...||
...are you saying that wayne lyons is transferring to michigan for academic reasons?
|20 weeks 2 days ago||wrong article.||
