“On the offense last year, they had great spacing. That’s what I remember. Great spacing, great shooters, like Nik Stauskas, who’s not there right now. But they always have someone to fill the roles. They have a cutting offense, kind of hard to guard.”

- robinson didn't develop all that much from when he got here, but beilein scoped him out way early, too...i don't know that anyone saw him as a draftable nba talent until his senior year in high school. i don't give beilein credit for 'developing', necessarily, but i definitely give him credit for finding him in the first place.
- vogrich is a good call - he didn't come on all that much from his freshman year. that might have something to do with the increased talent level around him, and while he became a sneaky rebounder and would usually give some good minutes, he never turned into the instant offense shooter off the bench that his rep coming out suggested that he might be.
- smotrycz...partially agree on this. he was still a kid when he left, so i might grade that one as incomplete.

from the three replies:

...i for one will be stunned if every one of these guys doesn't make a leap this year. the man is an absolute genius and both finding AND developing talent. is there anyone who hasn't t markedly improved on his watch, injuries aside?
|4 days 18 hours ago||me too.||
i'm not in the target demographic either.
the purdue thing mystifies me as well...and they are jumping in with both feet. check out the upcoming "crowdsourced" helmet design: http://petapixel.com/2014/06/04/purdue-football-team-crowdsourcing-helme...
|4 days 19 hours ago||FWIW,||
As it happens, USC is breaking out some alternate chrome helmets this weekend.
I will never, ever understand why schools with iconic, instantly-recognizable uniforms are willing to screw with them in exchange for what can only be marginal revenue. Michigan, Notre Dame, now USC. The hell?
|5 days 15 hours ago||des morgan...||
i have to say that i don't think about nfl prospects for our guys all that much, but morgan seems to me like david harris: not as supremely talented as some other guys, but a smart player and a major thumper. what nfl team can't use someone like that?
ALSO, i am one of the premier bitchers about the piped-in RAWK music...that dennis norfleet requested, got, and grooved to piped-in 'atomic dog' makes me a) happy as hell and b) a little less strident about it. these kids today and their rocks and rolls, i guess it ain't all bad.
|6 days 14 hours ago||yes, apparently.||
...that brady hoke. he doesn't miss a trick on the ol' clock management, does he? nails it every time.
apparently it was an execution thing, or some such nonsense.
|1 week 10 hours ago||AND...||
if they DID think he was a better option, they should have stuck with him the following week.
|1 week 10 hours ago||oh, that's just ridiculous.||
the chances of penn state giving up a touchdown on a turnover in that situation are vanishingly small to the point of impossibility, and you know it.
i'll re-ask my question - have you ever, even once, heard of the offensive team giving up a defensive touchdown in that situation? nope.
i'll ask a couple more - did you say "oh boy, penn state is going to try a hail mary"? of course you didn't. what do you think greg mattison was thinking about that play? think he was excited that he had to defend one more play before halftime? of course he wasn't.
|1 week 15 hours ago||i'm sorry, but...||
there's not really any risk in trying a hail-mary, right?
i mean, i guess we're going to argue every single opinion, but i can't think of a single time that a hail mary attempt went bad in a game-changing way, and i mean ever. if you can point out an exception, i'll shut up on this, but let's be serious here. there are very, very few coaches who wouldn't at least fire it at the end zone with a guy who can get it there.
|1 week 16 hours ago||agreed...||
...at least re: bellomy. i thought he would be better than he turned out to be, or at least tiny bit serviceable.
that said - he was something like 3 of 15 with 4 picks against nebraska...that's some historic overmatched-ness, and it happened in week 8 or 9. i have a hard time giving the coaching staff a pass on that - how competent could he possibly have looked in practice, compared to that? and if he DID look good in practice they sure jumped off that ship in a hurry when he stunk it up...seriously - nobody looked at him in practice and wondered whether he could fill in when denard was (inevitably) knocked out of a game? ever? they must have just shrugged it off, right?
of course they did, because that's, you know, what this staff does.
|1 week 17 hours ago||understood...||
...i didn't have much of an issue with the length of the replay, more with the length of gilmore blathering about it. 'course, at that point every word he said felt like a lifetime. worst ever.
|1 week 17 hours ago||nope.||
yes, denard was the QB...a somewhat injury-prone QB.
there was absolutely no doubt that he would get knocked out at some point during that season, but the staff said, that's okay, we'll go with russell bellomy when that happens.
|1 week 17 hours ago||RE: the jourdan lewis "touchdown" replay||
the other thing about the way-too-long replay? rod gilmore saying at LEAST six times that yes, that was indeed an incompletion. sweet christ, we can all see the goddamn thing, we don't need you to keep talking about it. find something interesting to disc...uh...oh, hell. never mind.
|1 week 5 days ago||tl;dr||
so, how are practices going? still going great? spirited? working hard?
|1 week 5 days ago||well, yes, but...||
...come on. the guy was (and still is) one hell of a good coach.
suggesting that was all because of tattoos and free test drives is more than a little reductive. lots of guys cheat and aren't anywhere near as successful.
|1 week 5 days ago||Sorry if I missed it but...||
...wasn't there some (crazy) discussion of Mike Trgovac on the last go-round? I know this is all just masturbatory, but would he be completely off the table?
|2 weeks 4 days ago||COMPLETELY agree.||
yes, jay, NFL tickets are more expensive than college football tickets. it's also a goddamn professional sport complete with professional, you know, athletes. and yes, $295 is not all that much, particularly if you are one of those pro athletes.
but i had to scrape my money together for season tickets for all six of my years in ann arbor; tickets were a lot less expensive back in those days, but it still hurt. hearing a pro athlete preach about what a great deal it is for a student to get to pay 'only' $295 for seven opportunities to get kicked in the figurative nuts by an incompetent athletic department is really appalling.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||rodriguez and 'michigan man'||
the money quote is the last paragraph, re: "michigan man," and it's something i've been thinking about a lot over the last year.
bo wasn't a "michigan man," until he was.
john beilein wasn't a "michigan man," but (imho) he is now.
here's what a "michigan man" is - someone who wins games, isn't a smarmy hypocritical weasel. but i'll be totally fine if i never hear that damn phrase ever again.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||Canham uber alles||
mrs canham makes a fantastic point, one that i'm not sure has been previously articulated in quite the same way.
if you're going to say that the 'value-added' crap makes the experience more appealing to the students...well, there should be at least some evidence that the students approve.
instead, we have a student section that gets roomier every week, and now you have students that are actively campaigning against the things you do. so why the hell are you doing them?
wow experience my ass.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||jane coaston...||
...has become a MUST to follow on the twitters. she's great.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||okay, here's the thing...||
...i've been saying for four years that i literally could not give a shit less what brady hoke tells the fans or media, and that i only care about what he says behind closed doors to his team. there are people on this board who've bitched about every single press conference because brady hoke wouldn't kill al borges, or fred funk, or whoever else, in front of god and bo schembechler. those people are idiots.
but, dear god, dave brandon and brady hoke - you HAVE to face the press and explain your actions openly and honestly. you can't stand there and either outright lie about how you endangered one of your 115 "sons" or issue mealymouthed middle-of-the-night press releases. be goddamn men and face the music.
burn baby burn.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||i would also add...||
...there is no way on god's green earth that a head coach - ANY head coach - wouldn't have straight-out ASKED the medical staff: "hey, guys, i'm starting to think about this game thing i've got going saturday night - any chance my current starting quarterback might not be available? i know he got carted off the field yesterday, just wondering how he's feeling."
burn baby burn.
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||no, he wasn't.||
there is no way he was cleared by anyone. not a chance.
picture this - he finally gets pulled, goes to the sideline, gets "checked out," the docs tell brady, "shane morris is ok to go back in." brady goes "what? he was hurt?" (he had no idea, you know).
fast forward, press conference: "brady, why did morris go back in?" "well, he was cleared by our medical staff." end of story, right? NOPE. that's because it didn't happen.
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||me too.||
i've read every single word on the front page on this site, basically since its inception, and somehow this became common usage...i get 'who' we're talking about, but i don't know the background behind the name. a little help? </shame>
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||geez, whatever.||
christ, it's going to be a long 2 months.
dear sports media: nobody knows anything, nobody has fucking SAID anything, and nobody WILL say anything until the job opens. IF it opens. so kindly shut the fuck up about it.
(i would also add - there's no reason to be an echo chamber for this crap. there's going to be a derek-jeter-retiring level of ink spilled on this subject over the next few weeks, and all of it - literally every single bit of it - will be complete, 100% fabrication. it's okay to not point it out, guys)
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||"michigan man."||
if i never hear that phrase again, i'll be just fine with it.
is john beilein a "michigan man?" well, duh.
hell, bo wasn't a "michigan man," until he, you know, WAS.
rich rodriguez was a holy disaster here, but there has NEVER been an athletic department more in need of a damn firehosing than this one was when he got here. AND IT'S GOTTEN WORSE.
|3 weeks 20 hours ago||no, they didn't.||
|3 weeks 21 hours ago||i'm not even pissed any more.||
i'm just...beaten. i was pretty close before the season started, to be honest (i'm just so tired of being treated like a bank account wearing a goddamn 'M' hat) but a team that was actually fun to watch would have made that go away, at least a little bit...and i'm not even talking about going 5-0, more like fielding a team that's mostly watchable. this team isn't.
and it's really too bad - there are some guys on this team that, if the coaching staff wasn't 90% incompetent, could become among my favorite players we've ever had. i LOVE devin gardner - great kid, smart, super-tough, dynamic. jake ryan is fun to watch. funchess. we've got a true freshman at left tackle, and he looks way more competent than his coaches - think about what he might be 3 years from now...
instead, i'm seriously thinking that i won't even watch saturday's game by CHOICE, and that's never happened to me in 45 years of fandom. what. the fuck?
|3 weeks 2 days ago||this team||
is worse than the rodriguez 3-9 team, and it's not even really that close. at least you could see what they were trying to do on that team and it was a question of the talent fitting the scheme. this team, the talent does fit the scheme, and it's still a goddamn tire fire. worse, they don't look like they even give a shit.
if i never the phrase "michigan man" again it will be too fucking soon. burn 'em all.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||holy hell.||
i missed the "cool play action bro" play live, and god knows i didn't rewatch this disaster, but...sweet jeebus, that is just unwatchable. gardner actually has time to set (imho), but he hops on one foot and throws across his body. i wonder how many yards we've left on the field because of shitty mechanics? did nussmeier slap him in the side of the helmet when he made it to the sideline?
also, you know who would have this offense - with this exact personnel - kicking the ever-loving shit out of every defense it faced, including sparty? i do. we actually fired him about 3 1/2 years ago.
god knows, i'm not suggesting that we should have kept rodriguez around. that would have been crazy. but there's offensive talent here. there's no reason they should look this inept.
