i just told my girlfriend that it felt like football weather yesterday, and she said she thought the same thing. she's pretty awesome that way.

i love this place.
i love it because, you know, michigan, man. this here thing is as close as it gets to an establishment blog, if there is such a thing, and i don't say that lightly. you want to know what's happening, you come here. period. but that's not the biggest reason.
i love it because i hardly care about recruiting, but i still want to know 30,000-foot view. general gist, that's it, definitely not "player x has narrowed his list to twelve schools and will announce next february." i don't have the bandwidth. but that's not the biggest reason.
i love it because i'm a stats guy, but not that much. i like UFR, but, again - general gist is plenty. if it says someone was DO (9), or whatever the syntax is, great, i'll read it, but i mostly skip the data to read the overview. that's not the biggest reason, either.
no, the reason i love this place is because when the guys unleash the column-type things, and wax rhapsodic? godDAMN.

a great man once said, "notre dame can go to hell."
truer words were never spoken. screw 'em.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||totally agree on jimmy jackson||
happened to see ohio state play at wisconsin the year that they were stacked loaded. this was long before dick bennett and bo ryan, obviously - steve yoder was flailing about, leading the team to yet another .500-ish record.
but that night, the old wisconsin fieldhouse was rocking - i think ohio state may have been undefeated, or ranked #1 in the country, and for once the wisconsin fans were living up to their current rep for obnoxiousness. it was fab-five-in-breslin level anger and antagonism, and jimmy jackson was completely unfazed and classy all night - with a hack like randy ayers coaching ohio state, they needed all the steady leadership they could get, and jackson provided it. i loved the guy from that point on.

man, did i hate that guy. he was SO good, but he also had the neck roll, the pornstar mustache, the weird number (36, if i'm not mistaken)...most critically, he had that one game against us when he had 29 tackles. twenty nine! couldn't stand him any longer.
then he went to the lions, and it turned out that he was an all-out gamer (didn't he play a season with a torn tricep, or some such?) and a good talker. he seemed to leave his heart on the field every single game. for the lions!
now, he's just about the only color guy i can stand for more than five minutes. love the guy.

...buckle up, it's gonna be a rough couple of years. an old, expensive, below .500 roster is a bad sign.
|4 weeks 6 hours ago||as someone who runs meetings on a semi-daily basis...||
...let me tell you, there has never been a time when something was accomplished after the two-hour mark of any meeting, ever. only a corporate dipshit would keep a meeting going after four hours, let alone SEVENTEEN. good heavens.
|4 weeks 8 hours ago||man, i was all excited for football...||
...but now i'm all bummed. why, oh why, didn't we get someone or something named "kyle flood" to replace brady hoke? sounds like a real straight shooter.

the 'hoosiers' article exists for one reason, and one reason only: pageviews.
only you can stop dumbasses.

...until i read the (apparently unironic) phrase "clever person in the league office," at which point the entire piece lost every shred of credibility.

...worked as a grad assistant at UM in the early nineties. He was assigned to receivers, a group that included a couple guys named Derrick Alexander and Desmond Howard. He's a bright, capable guy, crappy UConn teams notwithstanding.

this really is the dead season, isn't it?

never not douchey. EVER, and that has nothing to do with this interview, because whatever.

...i remember the day of that ohio state game like it was yesterday.
my brother was a manager for the team that year and i got his parent tickets for that game. i had to stop at his house to pick them up before the game, and one of his roommates had three or four of his buddies up from ohio state visiting. they were, as you might expect, whooping it up, drunk, stupid, and loud, giving points and talking shit about how great this group of buckeyes was, right there on my brother's couch at 10:30 or so in the morning. i tried to poke back, but it was like arguing with a group of juggalos, so i grabbed the tix and took off for blue-er pastures.
so we kicked their asses all afternoon, and i headed back to my brother's house on john street. there those gigantic assholes sat, in the same places on the couch where i'd left them, sad, drunk tired and with the most beautiful blank shellshocked looks on their faces i'd ever seen, as if they'd just watched the michigan marching band director screw their mothers. WHICH HE PROBABLY DID.
it was a great day.

i refuse to just shrug my shoulders and say "everyone does it" or "hey, that's recruiting nowadays" or anything of the sort. yes, decommits happen. the "better opportunity" and "closer to home" things? ok, yeah, i get it. guy got hurt and got blown off? grayshirt? yuck and yuck. we'd be killing just about anyone else in the country for stuff like that.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||that feels like a perfect analogy to me||
when a great pitcher loses his fastball, he can still get people out by changing speeds and hitting spots, but it gets harder and harder for him to completely dominant for long stretches by blowing people away.
that's how it feels with red the last few years. at one point he could just put out wave after wave of super-talented kids, but he doesn't retain them the way he used to, and while we can still get on hot streaks, we can't dominate for long stretches any more.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||the obvious response...||
...to the "does not benefit student athletes" line is a very simple two-word phrase, those two words being "Fuck" and "You." Athletic Directors and the NCAA could not care less about "student athletes;" if they did, their policies would treat them as something other than indentured servants.
The line about the pros using college sports as minor leagues is ridiculous, too. They do, of course, but I fail to see how it's a whole lot different than the colleges exploiting their athletes to get multi-billion dollar TV contracts.

...makes me extraordinarily happy.
we get all involved in wins and losses here, but we can't ever forget this other stuff. he got his degree, and he's a successful outcome for this program, whether or not he goes somewhere else or ever plays beyond college.
don't forget, either, that the coach he signed for got canned a few weeks after he committed, and he stuck it out, because he liked the school.
i wish him the best.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||argh||
crap, you beat me to it.
this gif - as much or more than any play he made on the field - is what made me love denard so much. he threw himself into being a student here as much as any starting quarterback ever did. the guy went to hockey games!!!

still a michigan man, i wish him the best.

totally fine with this.
|21 weeks 1 day ago||green bay is a good job.||
dick bennett was there for 11 years before he took over at wisconsin, tod kowalczyk was tehre for 8 years before taking over at toledo, brian wardle just parlayed it into a job at bradley. oh, and former um women's coach kevin borseth left ann arbor for green bay in 2012, which speaks pretty highly of their athletic department.
it's a good job, and he's ready. hope he goes there, tears holy hell out of the horizon league, and comes back here when beilein retires.
i'm worried about lavall jordan leaving, too. that guy's ready, and he MAKES point guards.
we're going to miss both those guys when they're gone.
|22 weeks 6 days ago||in beilein we trust, man.||
with or without levert, this team will be a wrecking crew a year from now.
a few years ago edsbs described lsu football as a gorilla with a chainsaw for a penis. that's both funny as hell and possibly applies to um men's hoops, 2015-16
|23 weeks 6 days ago||i don't know about that...||
...again, i don't know diddly, but the mere existence of non-competes tells me that it's not as cut and dried as "your boss can't tell you shit." that and the fact that there is apparently some legislation being underway to end it outright tells me that there's at least some enforceability.
i don't think it's a huge stretch to say that signing a letter of intent and / or accepting a scholarship to a member school should limit your free agency somewhat.
note that i'm not arguing whether the entire loi / scholarship system (or for that matter the mere existence of the ncaa as a 'governing' body) is valid in the first place.
|23 weeks 6 days ago||well,||
i would only point out that non-compete clauses in contracts are extremely common, to the point that jimmy john's (jimmy john's!!!) has non-competes for its sandwich makers:
i think you can make a case that signing a letter of intent and agreeing to accept a scholarship is a form of a non-compete.
i would also point out that i have literally zero legal insight or knowledge, so this may be utter gibberish on my part.
