I was around. I went to that game. I remember hearing on the radio in the parking lot structure that Gutierrez was hurt and Henne would be the starter. Your conspiracy theory made me laugh, so thanks for that.

There are plenty of countries that are as expensive as or more than the US, and they don't have tuition even close to what we have. College in Germany isn't free because Germany is dirt poor, it's free because it's subsidized.
I'd also really dispute that our colleges are much better than other developed countries for undergrad. Graduate school is a different story.
Also, you're definitely right about staying in-state. There's no way I'd recommend someone from out of state to go to Michigan unless they got a lot of money saved up to cushion the huge blow. Going to Indiana or Purdue in-state for half the cost is well worth it. I went to UofM-Flint for undergrad, got really good grades and crushed the GRE, and I guess had good letters of recommendation although I never saw them, and got accepted to Carnegie Mellon and the London School of Economics for masters' programs. Granted, Ann Arbor would have been a hell of a lot more fun than still living at my mom's place near Flint, but you really don't need to go to a top-notch, pricey university in undergrad to get into good graduate programs.

OK, but this was 3 days after Harbaugh was gone. They didn't have to make way for a new Super Bowl trophy in that time.

Gutierrez went on to play at the University of Michigan, where he was slated to be the starter in 2004 before he suffered a shoulder injury (a torn labrum) before the season opener during pregame warm-ups. Backup quarterback freshman Chad Henne played well during the games Gutierrez was unable to play and was thus awarded the starting job.

That's flat-out wrong. Gutierrez was the starter. Henne started because Gutierrez got hurt.
Also, calling a true freshman a lock based off of his high school career is nuts.

Why only look at this year's young players? Novak was luck? TREY BURKE was luck? Jordan Morgan was luck? Spike was luck? LeVert was luck? His whole team of nobodies that made it to the Elite 8 at WVU was luck? And he's had all that "luck" with basically no busts. Who is the biggest bust under Beilein? Carlton Brundidge? At some point it isn't luck. It's also ridiculous writing off Donnal considering he's getting his first action ever this season and bigs take a while to develop. Chatman has obviously been very disappointing, but it's insane writing off a true freshman.
Just the fact that Kentucky was even in the NIT should tell you something. Also, yes, VCU gets in the tourney consistently but they're a somewhat gimmicky team. They do well because their system guarantees them a bunch of wins against teams that are turnover prone. They're also basically guaranteed to lose to teams like Michigan.
Also, as some others point out below. Besides all the guys leaving for the NBA, this team lost its best 2 players! If Walton and LeVert were healthy, this team would be in the tourney.
Point is, it's crazy to be concerned about Beilein's future going forward as some others are, especially Pinky. You know it's crazy when the criticism is that Beilein isn't capitalizing enough on making Michigan one of the elite teams in all of college basketball the last 2 years. People forget that Michigan basketball isn't Michigan football.

Arm strength usually is an asset. It takes time to learn to take some heat off the ball. I'd bet in the beginning, it's a bit awkward throwing differently like that. Think of the Tigers basically losing the (2006?) World Series on a couple gimme throws because they thought about making it TOO easy it seemed. I really don't think Morris' problem is that he's too arrogant to dial it back.
I don't have faith in any particular guy, but you'd think with all the options they have, the winner will be serviceable.
Also, some are talking about Speight being Harbaugh's guy, but just from what people say, Malzone seems more like the "gamer" who makes plays that Harbaugh wants. Also, Harbaugh isn't looking for Denard speed at the QB position, but he still likes mobility back there. Does Speight have any?

Not only is it atrocious what they said, but it's amazing how dumb those guys are. Saying that stuff with your job and photo available for anyone to see. I expected a bunch of guys making single comments. Can't believe how they just kept at it.

It isn't more basketball. If they scrapped the tourney, we'd get a couple more regular conference games, which would be especially welcome with our now bloated conference.

I'm in favor of keeping it out. I've occasionally ruined a game because I reflexively hit mgoblog on my bookmark toolbar.g
Having said that, I have the mgoblog android app and check the site on my pc easily without having notifications. It really doesn't make mgoblog difficult to reach...

"Of course some S&C coaches are significantly better than others." Given what evidence? What S&C coach can you point to making a material difference over another?
I talked about it in my post. Running an entire football program is a massive endeavor with a lot of things that can go wrong. A lot of that also involves staying up on the latest trends, being a master tactician, being a great recruiter, just plain luck, etc. Yes, fine details may make a small difference, but S&C isn't nearly as complex. Plenty of average dudes get strong and fast just following a decent routine on a weightlifting website. Probably the most useful aspect of an S&C coach isn't actually having some great wealth of knowledge but making an exercise and diet plan that makes it easy for players to stick to it and to make sure they follow through with it. A lot of people want to think there's some magic formula that's some shortcut to getting big in the gym, and there's not.

On the umhoops recap, he did address benching them. He said it's a moot point because "in the last couple of minutes, you don’t care which way it’s going to go." That seems...odd. Closing out the half is usually seen as something pretty important. I don't get why the end of the half doesn't matter.

I don't follow recruiting much. Why isn't he just taking an official? Has he used them all up already?

That hypertrophy bit is totally irrelevant though. That's talking about beginners. Guys a couple years into college football programs are definitely not beginners. Even coming out of high school they aren't total beginners.

Yeah, with all of our returning experience it's hard not to be really optimistic about this year. It would seem with all the competition at QB and Harbs teaching them, the winner has to be at least decent.

That was basically my post in one sentence lol.
|4 days 16 hours ago||Of course there could be||
Of course there could be someone employed who is bad, but how is someone who doesn't know about weightlifting going to get a job at a major college program? Yeah, sure if the team just jumped rope 5 minutes a day, no one would make games. Therefore, what? Wellman is a terrible S&C coach? Wellman was doing exactly the thing you're talking about with Tolbert.
We've had this dumb debate with every new S&C coach. The new guy is a weightlifting God/genius (one isn't enough), and the old guy didn't know anything. That has happened with Barwis and Wellman and now with Tolbert.
Again, it's not that having a good S&C coach isn't important, it's that anyone at this level is going to be good. Also, there's no real secret to weightlifting. Yes, there are a lot of things you can tweak and optimize and all that, but if you've got a an S&C coach worth a damn, he's going to have 98% of what you need. Football changes because of philosophy and rules and a bunch of other stuff, so having a coach who hasn't fallen behind in the game is important, but our bodies are still the same. It's not like some coach is going to come in and do, I don't know, pyramid training, and all of a sudden the team is twice as strong and fast as any other in the nation.
Whatever difference there is between S&C coaches is made totally insignificant in how the players are taught the actual game, recruiting, time management in games, etc.

The problem is what coach doesn't have that 2 foul policy?
Has there ever been an mgoquestion at a presser asked about it? It's naive to think he would change because of that but it's so maddening. It was maddening even when NC did the same against Duke when they last played. Nc took out their best player with four fouls for a good chunk of the second half.

Well, assuming everything else would have stayed the same with players leaving and getting injured, they still would have been nowhere near great, but they definitely would be much better and it would have been a lot of fun seeing him make that play for us instead of OKC.

Well, usually logos don't work because they're not letters...
I don't think we should wear them all the time, but they're not that bad. And more importantly, they're authentic. They're actual throwbacks. Some NFL teams have horrific throwback jerseys, but for one game out of the year, I think it's cool.
The '89 throwbacks haven't been a regular thing, have they? We should definitely wear them once a year.
