Was this the plan from the beginning? What a strange situation. Its not like those minutes arent available right here.
February 1st, 2022 at 2:50 AM ^
On the other hand, when there's an opportunity at your position and you still can't get on the court, that sounds like it may be time to go.
February 1st, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
When he hits the court next season for whatever team he cant possibly be behind less than a UM team that just graduated Brooks and Jones. He is transferring so he doesnt have to play behind players that wont be here.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:24 PM ^
Harbaugh's fault
January 31st, 2022 at 9:27 PM ^
Would never have happened if Jim had already signed his contract
February 1st, 2022 at 2:48 AM ^
No no no. Warde's fault.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:27 PM ^
Isn’t that the one position where you have playing time/open competition?
January 31st, 2022 at 9:36 PM ^
Well good luck to him.
This whole situation seemed weird, it always felt like he wasn't getting a fair opportunity and playing time, but who knows..
January 31st, 2022 at 9:46 PM ^
I suggested preseason that he would/should transfer and got negged for it. He just didn't perform with the opportunities given to him, for whatever reason. A change of scenery is what he needs.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:20 PM ^
I hate to break it to you but suggesting that a current player (especially one with upside and opportunities) should transfer is generally not a great post. I am sure the player is aware that there are other options and does not need fans encouraging him to leave. Just my two cents.
February 1st, 2022 at 10:36 AM ^
I thought he looked quite promising when he played, but showed his green-ness.. But he would have been a nice transition from the past team to this one. Was bummed he hasn't played... he is better than Jones and Bufkin.
February 1st, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
I thought he was going to be a starting guard this year. I have been really puzzled but being that I know literally nothing about the situation I have just kind of tried to ignore/forget about it. It is disappointing. I thought he showed legit flashes.
February 1st, 2022 at 2:47 PM ^
What data are you using to suggest he’s better than Bufkin or Jones?
February 1st, 2022 at 1:57 AM ^
He got playing time last year and was really bad. We didn't see him on the court much this year, but it seems far more likely that he was given an opportunity in practice and continued to struggle vs. not being given an opportunity.
Or there are off-court issues going on.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:37 PM ^
Insiders have hinted that there's more to this story...but I haven't seen anyone indicate what that actually is or means. But I didn't get the impression this was about him being unhappy at Michigan.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:39 PM ^
....as is Jim.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:44 PM ^
I hate to speculate, but Zeb says himself that transferring is in part due to his health. I do not believe Michigan's schedules/practices would put his physical health at risk more than other P5 teams. I'm wondering if it's mental/psychological. There shouldn't be a stigma around this. He was a big time recruit who was struggling with his minutes here amid lofty expectations.
I wish him the best wherever he lands. But he appeared to be over his head here.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
Could be stress from academics here? Not sure what his major was, but zoom classes were definitely harder for different majors
January 31st, 2022 at 11:43 PM ^
Absolutely could be.
February 1st, 2022 at 12:08 AM ^
Yeah, there is obviously more to this than we know about. I suspect that is why he has been absent from the team a bunch this year too..
February 1st, 2022 at 10:25 AM ^
It feels like there is more than just on court performance. Not everybody is a fit.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:40 PM ^
He had to go. He’s going to go to a lesser conference and ball out
February 2nd, 2022 at 9:14 AM ^
No he didn't have to go. And you don't know that.
It might be likely he goes to Butler, Cincinnati or Marquette or something along those lines...but he could transfer to another B1G school without question.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:41 PM ^
Can he shoot the 3 or defend the PnR?
February 1st, 2022 at 9:20 AM ^
Well he could in HS. Both of those things are mentioned in Brian's Hello post https://mgoblog.com/content/hoops-hello-zeb-jackson
Thats why I wanted to give him more time this year
January 31st, 2022 at 10:21 PM ^
I mean, good luck to the kid.
Not sure what happened, but obviously not being able to carve out a role on this roster was a sign of things of things to come.
it seemed like PT was there for the taking, but Zeb wasn't able to gain the confidence of the staff that he could step into the line up.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:30 PM ^
Hope Zeb is okay and that we hear what went on here one day.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:41 PM ^
He was a big time recruit. He prob would of benefited from being in Beleins system and point guard development. Wish him best of luck .
January 31st, 2022 at 10:54 PM ^
He was not that big of a recruit. He wasn't able to start on his (admittedly stacked) HS team, but as a senior going to Michigan, that was a red flag. He was a solid recruit, but certainly not "big time."
February 1st, 2022 at 12:52 AM ^
There was like 3 first round draft picks on that team and 4th currently in the NBA, so stacked is probably underselling it. It's asking a lot for even a top 75 kid to start over 2 backcourt lottery picks.
February 1st, 2022 at 6:08 AM ^
And the guy who played his position was a guy by the name of Cade Cunningham. The #2 overall PG in Zeb’s class wouldn’t have started on his HS team either.
February 1st, 2022 at 7:39 AM ^
You could certainly find room on the court for both Cunningham and Jackson on a high school basketball team, and still have plenty of success.
February 1st, 2022 at 1:23 PM ^
I'm pretty sure Moses Moody was their 2 guard and he was also a lottery pick. Scottie Barnes played the 3 I think, another top 5 pick. It's hard to start when the worst starter 1-3 was the 14th pick in the draft.
February 1st, 2022 at 7:13 AM ^
Yah you are right. Just remember being excited for him. Watched him play on ESPN a few times on his stacked hs team.
February 1st, 2022 at 5:47 PM ^
Or, would “have”.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:42 PM ^
I'm sure there is something to this and that it is none of our business.
I wish Zeb the best.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:48 PM ^
Good luck to him. Seems like things were happening this year that weren't conducive to him being his best on the court and I hope he can still succeed wherever he winds up.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:27 PM ^
One thing about Zeb that I have heard from multiple sources on and around the team:
No one spends more time in the gym working on his game than Zeb. I hope he finds a place where he can enjoy the fruit of his labor. Good luck young man.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:43 PM ^
Very sad.
February 1st, 2022 at 9:25 AM ^
Do you think / should we be a little concerned that maybe, just maybe, Juwan is playing favorites? Its possible he had to promise a lot of playing time to get Diabate, Houstan, and Bufkin to commit. And now Bufkin is getting time over Zeb. Then Diabate is starting over Johns and obviously there's been a lot of complaining on this board how much time Houstan gets even when he's not bringing much to the table.
Obviously you could argue that Johns has been terrible this year, Zeb hasn't done much, and there is no obvious replacement for Houstan.
Idk just a thought.
February 1st, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
If were true then his son would be playing a ton.
February 1st, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
Not necessarily. Tons of coaches don't play their own kids. Plus he probably didnt have to promise Jace anything to get him to commit.
February 1st, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
You would have done much better if you had simply posted "Idk". Just a thought.
Juwan and staff wandered into new territory (for them) with this roster. I believe they thought that Jones, Brooks, Dickinson and Johns-and even Williams could carry this team to mid-season and then the youngsters/newcomers would be ready to pull their weight. Clearly this has not gone as well as hoped and planned.
As Duke and Kentucky have demonstrated-despite Calipari and Krzyzewski, having top-rated recruiting classes year after year and a roster packed full with all that high-flying talent...it does not guarantee success. That is all that is happening here. Going forward, it is going to be interesting to see how Juwan rethinks this.
February 1st, 2022 at 12:54 AM ^
This sucks. I hope he's ok. I was a big fan of his and I thought he would be great at Michigan and really excited to see him develop. The roster seems really rough for next year, no seniors, relying on sophomores and freshmen, Dickinson most likely gone, same issues with shooting and defense and none of the incoming freshman seem like they'll be able to help in those areas except maybe Jett.
February 1st, 2022 at 6:02 AM ^
Good luck to Mr. Jackson. Sending thanks for representing the University, and wishing him well.
February 1st, 2022 at 6:51 AM ^
He looked good as a defender on the court in his limited minutes. I’d guess he turns out to be an above average to good college player by the time he’s done. He’s very athletic and 6’5. Good luck to him.
February 1st, 2022 at 7:27 AM ^
Good luck to the young man wherever he chooses to transfer
February 1st, 2022 at 7:35 AM ^
Juwan using the transfer portal 2 years in a row to get point guards also doesn't help these young guards. Obviously Mike Smith worked out great but Devante Jones maybe cost us David DeJulius and Jackson perhaps. I for one would of rather watched Collins and Jackson get experience this year than watch the Devante Jones show.
February 1st, 2022 at 8:12 AM ^
David DeJulius transferred two seasons before Devante Jones was even mentioned in the transfer portal, so I doubt he has anything to do with it.
February 1st, 2022 at 8:27 AM ^
Ok thats right. Damn getting old sucks ?
