YTTV and International Travel

Submitted by Sports on October 25th, 2022 at 12:35 PM

Can anyone provide advice on how to (legally) watch the MSU game this weekend when traveling internationally? I need to fly out of country due to an unforeseen family obligation and was planning to watch the game to decompress in the evening. We are Youtube TV subscribers, but it looks like that doesn't work for live or recorded content when traveling outside of the US.

I will only have my work laptop, so sketchy VPNs are out of the question. Are there free trials for competing services that allow international streaming?

Appreciate any and all advice.

I was out of the country during the Iowa game, YTTV didn't work for me at the hotel but I was able to find some site that I was able to stream it on. Oddly enough, I was able to watch the Maryland game on the plane with YTTV.

If it's allowed, and I can find it in my history, I'll send the info along.

Having recently traveled to Spain, I can tell you you will not be able to use YTTV outside of the US. You will need a VPN. I used NordVPN and it was a pain in the ass. I had to constantly change servers between various US cities to avoid YTTV's VPN server detection.

I would recommend bringing a personal device with you on your trip if you can't install a VPN on your work computer. Either that or find some other way to stream because you will not be able to use YTTV.

Best of luck.

That doesn't necessarily work. Not all companies use a VPN (current uses ZTNA; I couldn't install a VPN even if I wanted to).

Many companies (like my employer 2 companies ago) have firewalls which block access to certain media when logged into VPN. I remember the dark days when YT and Netflix were blocked.

Best bet, imo, is bringing along a personal device or finding a legit (i.e., not sketchy) streaming solution if using the work device.

My experience with YTTV is that it will detect a VPN and checks GPS location. I have recently been able to get a GPS spoof app on my phone to watch Lions games and then cast to my TV and no issues yet.

I live in France and this is my experience as well with YTTV. Using VPN with Hulu has worked without issues. I also did a free trial with FuboTV, which worked fine with VPN but I decided to cancel and continue using my friend's Hulu account.

If FuboTV is still offering a free trial, that may be a good option for OP.

There used to be something called ESPNPlayer for everything outside of the Americas. From google looks now it's only available in Europe, Africa and the Middle East - so won't work for much of Asia and the Pacific

I live abroad. Streaming on YouTube's Android app was surprisingly easy last weekend. It was the first time it ever worked for me, but search for a game, and then from within that game, swipe up from.the bottom of the screen and all other live games will show up. I was flipping seamlessly between games from across the Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big Ten at will, without lag, popup, or shutdown. I haven't had that viewing freedom since like 2004. I probably just shouldn't have watched anything since 2004 until last year, but that's not worth retreading.

Note: I do subscribe to YouTube premium. That probably helped me get the free viewings.

There are no streaming services in the U.S. which strictly speaking allow for use abroad as far as I am aware. A VPN is basically required. I wouldn't call VPN services 'sketchy', but I would probably be reluctant to install any non-work related software on a work machine.

Depending on where you go internationally, there might be local broadcast options.

The sticky is indeed out of date but I was able to connect to the paris alumni group via Facebook, and thus located a viable bar for the Iowa game.  For a night game however, this would be tricky.

i was able to get the audio of the Maryland game while in Italy, but VPN was unsuccessful.

I’m living in Canada and I’ve had some success using the Michigan alumni VPN, if you’re an alum. I often need to turn off location permissions, restart my computer and my browser, and then turn on permissions. With Macs at least, the computer doesn’t have a physical GPS tracker like phones and tablets do; it’s based on your IP address, which ideally the VPN is making your browser think is in the States. For a phone or tablet you can download software that tricks your GPS tracker. YouTubeTV seems to be much stricter than other things; the UMich vpn works just fine for Netflix and other things, but YouTubeTV always gives me problems. I know you said you wanted legal streaming options, but sportsurge.net is a very reliable bootleg option.

I just back from Argentina and used NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN. YouTube TV still won’t work for live because they request your precise location via Google Maps which defeats the VPN. I was able to use my YTTV login to access Fox Sports App which was fooled by the VPN. Maybe this would work logging into ESPN but I’m not sure.

I live in Europe and I can watch all the Michigan games live on my TV, which means the game this weekend come on at 1:30 am. I've been loving the noon game start times which means 6pm my time zone.

If anyone has a Firestick and knows about the Kodi app, I can only say Endzone addon. Google it. No VPN is needed but better safe than sorry. You're welcome.

Look into ESPN Player when you are overseas.  You even get a free trial week before it is something like 11 euros a month.  I used it while in France in September.

My recommendation:

  • ExpressVPN
  • ESPN App (Using YTTV credentials)

This worked great for me in Croatia for Michigan vs. Washington (minus the fact that it was 2am there) in 2021. I was just in Switzerland and was able to use the same method using the Fox Sports app to watch Michigan at Iowa.

Happy international watching!

I use Norton VPN - pretty mainstream

we watched the UConn game in Belgrade (an Abc game) with the ESPN app - no problems

we plan to watch the MSU game here in Morocco- another ABC game - on the ESPN app

I've been using Express VPN (Chicago as the location setting) and logging into YTTV on my browser (Chrome) and it's worked every game so far. It does ask you to confirm your location, but I just hit the back button and then hit the play button again.
