You Suck cheer

Submitted by UESWolverine on

Sorry if this is a repeat post - please delete if it is, but how do we eliminate the 'You Suck' cheer?! Am I the only one who cringes every time I hear it? It's really the only negative experience I have at our games.

Great response, someone has a differing opinion so we tell them to go away and "go post on MLive." Fantastic response.

So do you actually honestly want the crowd to chant we suck? Because I'm sure the second that happened MGoBlog would go nuts ripping the student section to shreads.

The point of a crowd, especially a student section, is to be a raucous environment to help support the home team and rattle the opposing team. Whether you old foggies like it or not, it's something that the sudent section likes doing and helps get them excited. The team's job is to score points and win the game, it's the crowd's job to be loud and an intimdating environment to help facillitate that, regardless of team or score. If you're saying that the crowd should temper their attitude so when we're playing a better team or losing a game we put our head between our tails and just shut up, you have no idea how to be a fan.

Also, calling the "you suck" bush league is laughable. Play any sport ever and you'll know what bush league is.

Calling it "vulgar" is a bit rich when every single stadium I've ever been to, pro, semi-pro, college (not high school I guess) has started at least one "bullshit" chant at the refs.

that we can't chant that another team sucks after we stop them on 4th down, well, I'd be pretty disappointed. For reference, on kickoffs OSU students chant "O-H-I-O rip his f***ing head off."

I like it, but only if done with the WOLVERINE CLAW and not a Florida State tomahawk chop!!! The students don't even do it the right way! Come onnnnn mannnnnn!!!!

I cringe every time, in fact... I yell "Good Luck!".  Poor taste... expect it at other places, not here.  Not classy and am not proud of it. I apolgize to anyone I bring that hears it.  Not what I think of when I think "Michigan Football" in fact the anthesis.

mostly because we've sucked more.

However, I'm old and in my day we only chanted affirmative cheers. Bedecked in our racoon coats and sporting ukuleles, we would encourage our charges with cheers of "23 skidoo!" and "Oh, you kid!"

The cheer is elligant in its simplicity. Stop trying to make football "classy".

It's very satisfying when you're winning. Alot of the complaints seem to be "but we've sucked". We're not supposed to suck. We will not continue to suck and we will go back to having dominating games justifying the cheer.

Until then i'm fine with bragging for no reason. I joined the campus 08 and didn't follow college football before then. That cheer was the only thing I had to convince me that Michigan was once good. I like it.

I concede, perhaps a big reason I'm not a fan... is when it's chanted when we are losing (and it's not close)... then we just look foolish.  If it's reserved for big games and appropriately timed then I guess I'm all for it.  See, I'm trying to find a reason not to yell at you to "Get off my lawn!"...

As crazy students, we loved it. The pep band was in on it. I'm sure You Suck will be replaced by something else equally cringe worthy that the students love. It's how they make football Saturday their own experience. As for me, I'd love to hear the shit cheer one more time. It would bring a smile to my face and not a frown.

I always thought it is silly in hockey games when the opponent returns to full strength and people say "and they still suck."  In reality the home team sucks as they didn't score on the power play.

I also cringe everytime I hear this.  This plays right into the uninformed fans problem I have.  It is classless and is another embarrassment.  Who sucks?  Was it the team that didn't make a bowl last season?  Get a grip and quit putting a target sign on our own backs.  I grew up respecting guys like Joe Dumars and Barry Sanders.  Guys who just shut up and did their job.  Now it's time for us to shut up and do our job.

A little OT, and this goes way back, but I remember sitting in the student section with my older sister when George Cavender was the band director and the band had just started the "let's go blue" song and chant.  The band was playing it seeminlgy between every play, and the students were getting so sick of it, that instead of chanting "let's go blue" they started chanting "fuck you George."  Now that's original AND classy!

I generally don't mind crude/vulgar cheers. I just don't like it because I don't want to hear students chanting stuff while Temptation plays (especially something that low-brow). I want to hear Temptation, damn it.

When I was a student, I thought the added "who cares?" at the end of each introduced visitor's name was kinda clever, but I never liked the "you suck" bit. It seemed a trifle below my personal standard of decorum. I would like to think that we could just beat a team soundly without resorting to juvenile taunts . We are representatives of Michigan, and should expect better from ourselves. But I've been an old man all my life.
