You're the Dictator of College Football. What do you change?

Submitted by DTOW on July 17th, 2019 at 2:11 PM

Recently, multiple sports radio personalities have expressed concern about the future of college football due to the growing regionalization of the sport.  We’re now heading towards our fifth straight year of having 2 of Alabama, Georgia or Clemson being in the national championship game which is obviously unhealthy for the sport.  Below is a few ideas that I’ve heard and think would be ideal but I'd like to hear others' thoughts and ideas:

  1. Further Conference Realignment
    1. The Big 12 needs to be split up with each respective school being absorbed into the remaining Power 5 conferences and Group of 5 Conferences creating a Power 4 (16 teams each) and a Group of 5.

Big 10 Adds:  Kansas & Kansas St

Pac 12 Adds:  Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma & Oklahoma St.

SEC Adds:  TCU & Baylor

ACC Adds:  West Virginia

G5 Adds:  Iowa State

  1. Scheduling
    1. Power 4 conferences must be matched up with each other on a rotating schedule.  Ie. Year 1: Big 10 vs SEC, ACC vs Pac 12.  Year 2: Big 10 vs Pac 12, SEC vs ACC. Year 3: Big 10 vs ACC, SEC vs Pac 12.
    2. Each Power 4 teams should be required to play one home game and one away game against their conference matchup every year.

  1. Playoff Expansion / Changes
    1. CFP should expand to 8 teams.  Power 4 Conference Champions get automatic bids.  Highest ranked G5 team gets auto bid.  3 at-large bids put in by CFP Committee.  3 at-large can come from any conference.
    2. CFP Committee ranks playoffs teams as they do now, however, Power 4 Champions must be ranked 1-4.  G5 team and at-large teams are ranked 5-8.  First round games are at the higher seed’s home field.

  1. Scholarship Changes
    1. Reduce scholarship allotment from 85 to 75.

Thank you... I'd force Harbaugh to go back to standard digits on the uniform, like ours of old, like msu and osus....   the new ones are a gimmick, and to me one should always try to keep the same aspects as much as possible when you had great success... I think they look stupid.

1. Penn State is thrown out of the B1G. MSU gets the same.

2. Nick Saban is put on an iceberg and set adrift

3. Players can be paid for their likeness

4. Playoff expanded to 12 teams. No more eleventy week layoff between the end of the regular season and postseason.

5. Media timeouts are cut in half.

1. Players can make money off their likeness (I would immediately become an unproductive dictator with the return of NCAA Football).

2. Playoff to 8 teams. Either Power 5 and 3 at large or Power 4 champs and 4 at large, depending on what happens with conference realignment.

3. Maryland and Rutgers exiled from the Big Ten. Notre Dame and Iowa State join the Big Ten West, Pitt and West Virginia join the Big Ten East. Big 12 disintegrates and someone else can figure that shit out.

4. Now that players can make money off their likeness, I would immediately form a task force to look for, investigate, and discipline impermissible pay. Players deserve to be able to monetize their own name for Christ’s sake, but with that should come strict enforcement of schools that continue to cheat even after players are given additional compensation.

We can roll that back to 1998 when Paterno was told Sandusky was being investigated by the police for child sexual abuse.  After Sandusky wasn't charged, Paterno hired him for another year as DC and nothing was done about Sandusky bringing young boys into the facilities after hours.

Then came 2001 and McQueary.

I knew the "Fuck Penn State" portion of MGoBlog would be out in force in this thread.

Fair enough.

But "shaming people relentlessly" is --- at this point, a full seven years out --- pointless.

I'm a PSU fan who can't stand the "Paterno Loyalists" portion of my fanbase.  But after 7 years, I've stopped any discussions with them and have simply come to terms with their existence.

They're like hard-core political tribalists.  You can't reason w/ them.  And arguing or "shaming" them gives them more and more of a "martyr complex."  Screw that.  I'm done enabling them in their desire to be victims.  Ignoring them is best.  Besides, the history books are the ultimate judge.  And there's a 0% chance the history books will be on the side of the "Paterno Loyalists."

(all this, of course, assumes one isn't coming from a POV of WANTING to define the entire PSU fanbase as "Paterno Loyalists."  There are some folk who probably do come from that POV.  Fair enough, but those folk aren't wrong themselves).

I'm sorry, this heinous time period in your school's history cannot and shouldn't be forgotten.  Try as you want to say this further enables the assholes who still idolize that ped enabling bastard, but by forgetting they all want the healing to complete.

BTW,FUCK ped state and all their delusional joepa loving fans and all the paternos and field goal franklin.

I appreciate that you are not one, but those apologists are still out there making themselves heard.  They permeate Penn Live and Black Shoes and were thumping their chests as late as this spring when Spanier had his conviction over turned.  The alumni there have elected apologists for Paterno to the board of trustees.  See Lubrano and that other jerk.  It's still a mess.

Seriously, do not go about playing the victim here, as YOUR fanbase does a great job of that.

Secondly, your comment about stopping the endless shaming makes absolutely NO SENSE!!!  For example, people who support rapists, child abusers, etc., should not be called out and we should just let them be???  They are not like bucknuts who support a team that openly cheats, they support and still idolize a selfish, ego maniac who only cared about his team's reputation and legacy not the welfare of little children. If you had a family member who was victimized I DOUBT you would be such a pacifist.

BTW, FUCK ped state and all their delusional joepa loving fans and all the paternos and field goal franklin FOREVER!!!

Aside from deriding the football program, which feels great, I disagree that it is pointless to endlessly shame Penn State. In the years since the Paterno scandal broke, other scandals at major institutions - Michigan State, Ohio State, Baylor - have been unearthed. Certainly, more monsters are yet to be uncovered. College athletics has put some evil people in positions of power, and these monsters and their enablers need to be made examples of.

When it comes to college football there is nobody better to make an example of than the man who is the only reason anybody knows or cares about Penn State. Penn State should be synonymous with abuse in college athletics forever.

Fair enough.  "Endless shaming of PSU feels great" (in your words).  I acknowledge your feelings in that regard.

But does it accomplish anything in terms of changing the hearts and minds of Paterno Loyalists?  I'd argue, as I said in my original post, no.

Did it do anything to stop any other scandals (you mentioned 3 other schools)?  Evidently not.

And - I don't like to play the victim.  I'm tough, I can stand up for myself and I don't take things personally.

But I'm also not Joe Paterno.  Nor am I one of his enablers.  I have no problem with "endlessly shaming" THEM.  But when you advocate "endlessly shaming Penn State" - I view that as you believing in the concept of "collective guilt" and, by extension, you being comfortable shaming everyone indiscriminately .  And IMO, that is bullshit.  A number of PSU folk, didn't tolerate, ignore or harbor Paterno and/or his enablers.  For instance, the PSU folk who were in positions of power and (1) commissioned the Freeh Report, (2) accepted its findings, and (3) worked to implement its recommendations.

You told me your feelings.  And those are mine.

-----

On a secondary note --- you were trying to bait me with the comment "(Paterno) is the only reason anybody knows or cares about Penn State."  That's a whole other discussion, but that's incorrect.  Simply think about the various structural advantages PSU has over 80% of college football.

I’d pay the players above the board. You’d see Alabama’s and Clemson’s competitive advantage disappear, though it would just shift power to the largest institutions. I’m okay with this because I’m less concerned with parity from top to bottom. I just want parity as it pertains to everyone following the same set of rules.

Edit: then I would salt the earth where Columbus used to stand before the previous commissioner burned it down.

Accelerate global warming to make the south uninhabitable, forcing their population to relocate north (having lakes being a huge selling point) making our backyard the most fertile recruiting grounds in America. Does the college football dictator have this sort of power?
