WTKA Rumor: Jamie Morris and Marcus Ray coming to PM drive slot

Submitted by lilpenny1316 on

I initially read this at www.detroitsportsrag.net.  I know there are varying opinions on Jeff Moss, but he usually is pretty accurate when it comes to the goings on at the local news outlets.

He will replace a simulcast of The Huge Show.  For the full article, here you go (plenty of sentence enhancers used in the article).  Here's the relevant SFW info:

Anyway, after 8am tomorrow, Simonson will no longer be able to claim he is on in Ann Arbor or lie that his reach gets to Motown. Because an announcement will be made on WTKA that Simonson’s simulcast of his trash Grand Rapids show is being axed and Jamie Morris will return to PM drive with a local program.

(I am told the former U of M stud running back will be joined by Marcus Ray.)

To confirm this, check out a tweet tonight from Jamie Morris:

Big announcement tomorrow in the 8:00am hour tomorrow!! On the @michiganinsider with @SamWebb77 & @Marcus_Ray29 & yours truly @JMorris23

If you're fortunate to pick up WTKA, an alternative to the Sparty slap show on 97.1 is coming soon.

EDIT: Changed title to officially call this a rumor until this is confirmed.

I seriously do not understand how an anonymous "Michigan fan" on the internet can hate on a former player who put his life/body on the line so that beloved Michigan could win a national championship. If you disagree with his analysis, say so respectfully. Calling him "pretty arrogant" is not respectful of the free service he gave to the university. Keep it to yourself man

I'm not sure what to make of the Morris and Ray show. I couldn't stand listening to Morris's Sunday show. Marcus Ray is fine in small doses but the way his stories are rejected by the players who were actually there when this stuff happened, he seems to be a compulsive liar. Its like watching a fake mermaid or giant shark show on the Discovery channel assuming it's real because of the source. This show gives me a Drew Sharp/Matt Dery vibe because I really don't look forward to listening to either host long term.

Ah, yes -- the Marcus Ray "get out of jail free" card. It makes up for *all* his shortcomings in other areas.

It's a great picture, but it has raised his play (which was good, as he spent some time in the NFL) to mythic proportions.

I will say, however, that the troll / parody accounts that exist for the Huge Show are actually entertaining, which presents the issue - what does that mean when the people making fun of your show are more entertaining than the show itself? I am going to go out on a limb here and say it doesn't speak well for your show.

I never understand the hate for Marcus on here.  He's loud.  So is every other guy on the radio, especially Sam Webb if I'm being honest, but we all love him.  Marcus provides great stories from the 90s, is very well hooked into the program, is best friends with Woodson, goes to practices regularly, and knows how to explain football to lay people.  What's the problem?

Probably because he's stubborn and holds to opinions past the point of insanity (like saying we shouldn't fire Hoke mere days before we fired him). And he can be condescending when someone disagrees with him. Other than stories and some technical Xs and Os, I don't find his contributions to be very good.

These are not attributes unique to him on the radio. They are attributes that you could say about many on the radio, so it's not just a "hater" mentality IMO. I just don't think he's very good. He's not the only one.

Agree. Spath's new show has been very entertaining so far. Not sure I'll be able to listen to everything this upcoming season between WTKA's shows and mgoblog.

Listen to all the podcasts while at work, and I find myself getting angry at both my boss and my subordinates for interrupting my listening as it's hard to get everything in the way it is. Yes, I have problems. I may also have OCD. In fact, I'm pretty sure I do have OCD. Been more clear to me lately.

option, and here's why:

1) Jamie: Too Bombastic - he typically yells nonsensically, doesn't really converse.  Few anecdotes and they tend to be repeated.  If you heard him when he was paired with John U. Bacon, then you know that saying he was bombastic is not an exaggeration.  Left to his own devices last fall on Sunday mornings as John's replacement, he failed to inspire or entertain.

2) Marcus: Woodson - Awkward on the radio at times, but occassionally really shines.

The blending of the two may be too much to take, time will tell and I'll definately give them a listen.  However, an outstanding third option that's not likely to ever happen again is the pairing of Fithian and Karsch.  If any old timers recall when they were on WTKA covering Michigan football, then you'll recall their interviews and their general reporting was outstanding. As much as Sam has improved, neither he nor anyone before him has exceeded the quality work produced by Fithian and Karsch.

Wait, seriously? I've listened to him a lot and rarely does he sound like anything other than the typical UM fan that says things like 'the team needs to get tougher, run the ball, and make plays'. I've heard actual real analysis about football like once from him. Which is weird because I'm sure he understands it really well. Maybe he's not good at communicating it and falls back to cliches that sound uninformed.

I'm a regular listener to the morning show on WTKA, and he frequently breaks down the game in far more technical terms than I can understand. A lot of the other stuff he says is standard radio bombast, hot takes and hot air, but his knowledge is pretty evident when he gets to it.

I don't think Simonson is a Spartan homer. I think he is genuinely a Michigan fan but being an attention whore is more important to him than being a Michigan fan. Izzo is just big an attention whore. They need each other. It's like one of those women who is still breastfeeding a 12 yr old. Everyone knows this shouldn't be happening but they can't stop. Izzo needs to receive the handy just as much as Simonson needs to give it. If Simonson can get a coach or player on the show, he doesn't care which school they attended as long as they give him attention.
