Would 2021 early enrollees being eligible to play in the Spring season?
Question for the Board - Would 2021 early enrollees being eligible to play in the Spring season? I can’t think of a reason why not, but it would be weird since they would should still be in high school.
If so, has the JJ McCarthy / Xavier Worthy era already begun?

And if they don’t play, would it count as their redshirt year?

That's probably the better question. I can't see why they wouldn't be able to play. They'll be students.
But yeah, the question is whether they'd have to burn a redshirt to not play.

Spring season? Good one.
I suppose they could be eligible. Absolutely no reason for them to play though.

Lots of players are going to opt out in the Spring. Some of those openings on the depth chart will be filled by EEs.

Spring season is not likely.

I promise that nobody on earth, least of all the people in charge, have any idea

Nobody knows shit about fuck right now.

Yeah! And nobody knows fuck about shit right now either.

Don't worry about it. There will be no spring season. One of the SEC teams will already have won the national championship in January, so what will Michigan be playing for, 3rd place in the B1G. and a bowl game with some 3rd place PAC team? This spring football concept was just thrown out by the B1G to trick fans in thinking they have a plan when they have jack shit.

Ya I agree. I can't see spring ball happening for a number of reasons.

I don’t disagree that a Spring season is unlikely.
My question is just a hypothetical on the basis (however unlikely) that there is a season.

I don't know if a spring season is likely or not. But the idea was definitely not just thrown out there to trick Big Ten fans. Number crunchers at the schools have been working on making it work for months. They want to recoup some of the revenue that will be lost in the Fall.
The Ivy League was the first conference to cancel fall sports and the first to announce they would explore moving the season to winter or spring. Every other conference that canceled since has said the same thing, including the JUCOs.

Yea don’t get the take the spring season is a ruse. We know the conferences stand to lost a fuck ton of money if football isn’t played and we know they don’t really care about individual players. A spring season lets them get most if not all their money and they won’t be concerned about conflicts with the draft or certain players sitting out since they don’t care about individual players.
It might not happen for other logistical reasons but I think they're seriously exploring it.

There's a 0.0% chance of a spring season. See you in the fall of 2021.

Username checks out.

I don’t think so as it would be the 2020-2021 season in terms of eligibility
August 12th, 2020 at 3:37 AM ^
Is this a freaking joke?!... the supposed "spring season" will be meaningless!!
August 12th, 2020 at 4:03 AM ^
I don’t even know if the conference big wigs know the answer to that yet. They seem to have been riding by the seat of their pants the entire time through this ordeal so I doubt they have an answer on this stuff either.

They should be able to participate in spring practice.

I think it’s an opportunity to create a unique eligibility due to a unique situation.
lets assume, for the sake of argument, that there somehow is a spring season. Roster management is going to be tricky at best with NFL bound players likely not wanting to play. The NCAA should (lol, I know) allow early enrollees to practice AND play without using a year of eligibility. It’s a unique situation that calls for unique solutions. I don’t see the harm in allowing a one-time “free eligibility” season in this circumstance.
then, assuming that everything is more or less back to normal next fall, then you have to be back down to the normal roster requirements. The incoming freshman can still redshirt if you want to and have their 5 years of eligibility intact.

It probably depends on whether OSU loses too many players to the draft. If they want to use the EEs they will get to use the EEs.
August 12th, 2020 at 8:57 AM ^
You mean the ones that stay?
August 12th, 2020 at 9:01 AM ^
lol spring season. See ya next Fall maybe
August 12th, 2020 at 9:17 AM ^
There won't be a spring season, so no player will have lost a year of eligibility, I'm going to speculate.
August 12th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
I read that Ryan Day said he was hoping for a combined eligibility year for Spring 2021 and Fall 2021. So players would play in the spring would burn their red shirt for the Fall while the players who didn't play are still eligible to redshirt in the Fall.

I think they should be eligible. Last year's early enrollees were able to practice before the Citrus Bowl so I imagine they could have played as well.
I wonder, like the person who asked above, whether an early enrollee who played in the spring 2021 and fall 2021 season would then be a junior for the fall 2022 season.
