12 PM ESPN- Ukraine v Wales for a spot in Group B with USA, Iran, and England.

Should be a great watch. Something to hold everyone over until baseball!

I go back and forth on this.

On paper, Wales is better (18) than Ukraine (27). USA is currently 15.

I personally do not think Wales is any great shakes. They have a superstar and pretty much everything goes through him. They remind me of a poor-man's England, which the USA has had success against.

I would be more worried about Ukraine. They are talented and would be riding an absolute wave of energy.

One reason I still can't get too much into soccer: too much influence by the refs (e.g. free kicks, penalty kicks, yellow/red cards, etc.).  It seems that so many goals occur from points where the gameplay was stopped by a ref and the score was on the ensuing kick.

Says a man who's perhaps never seen a college football or college basketball game?  :)  That's just as an example though. Or hockey, that seems to be a pretty ref influenced game. Pro Basketball. Shoot the NFL.  Chances are if you know the names of the ref, they're influencing what's happening on the field. Teddy Valentine, John O'Neill, Jerome Boger, Andy Van Hellemond, Scott Foster, or worse... Tim Donahey.

That said, referees are part of every sport. They dictate and influence every sport. Fouls and free kicks (I think is what you're describing) are just part of this particular sport.

But, I'm actually of the opinion that you shouldn't watch things you don't like. If it's not for you, that's cool. I don't watch F1, I feel ok with that decision.

The refs can influence those games as well, yet indivudal calls rarely decide the games (there are of course some notable exceptions - as well know - yet those are not normal).

It seems that soccer officiating (and I only really watch World Cup and Olympics) have fewer officiating events/calls than the other sports, but they have more impact on the games than in those sports.

The gameplay wasn't the stopped by the ref, it was stopped by a player who committed a foul.

Similar in proportion to all the yards that football teams get on penalties, or points basketball teams get at the FT line or goals hockey teams get on power plays.

The question is whether the foul/penalty calls are correct or not (because correct calls are caused by the players, incorrect calls are on the ref).

I would argue in soccer the high leverage officiating is the best of any sport because a higher proportion of calls with scoring implications get reviewed via VAR than in any other sport.  I would argue football and basketball are far worse because most fouls don't get reviewed (shooting fouls in bball, holding and PI in football) and there are a lot of bad calls / no calls in football and basketball.  I don't watch enough hockey to know, but my guess is similar.

My wife is Welsh and still has most of her family in Wales. But I was rooting for Ukraine today.  I mean,  how could you not? Peace be with them.
