Woodson a winner in wine world
Woodson has recently entered the wine business with a label called appropriately “Intercept”. One of his wines was named one of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of the year today. Quite an accomplishment for any winemaker, especially one relatively new to the business. Here’s the summary from the magazine:
72-Chardonnay Monterey County Charles Woodson's Intercept -
This is impressive for its vibrancy and balance, blending fresh lemon zest, tangerine and Fuji apple flavors with a savory thread of fresh tarragon and grey salt on a plump frame, but with plenty of acidity to keep the flavors in focus. Drink now. 5,000 cases made. —MW
Cheers and Beat Ohio!

I tried some last week and agree with the above description, except rather than a Fuji apple flavor I felt it was closer to a Honeycrisp.

mmmmmm honeycrisp

I'm thrilled he's doing well. He's been in the wine business since at least 2001.

Yup. Raiders had training camp in Napa until 2019.

I like his Cabernet.

yeah man, i cant do chard... when i go to tastings, i always say skip the chard (and all whites as far as i'm concerned) and get the reds

Welp, your username almost checks out

I'm with you...skip the chard. Can never split a bottle with the wife as she only does white (no chard thankfully) and I prefer red.

I like an occasional white wine (mostly Pinot Grigio, the occasional white Vinho Verdhe) but I cannot stand Chardonnay. The diacetyl (which gives it that buttery flavor) drives me nuts.
I didn't use to mind it in beer (e.g., Sam Smith's), but a little of that tended to go a long way.

Go for unoaked Chardonnay if you want something not buttery.

I’m guessing it would get me drunk quite nicely.

Wow. Impressive.
Now people have a choice with their meal: Woodson's wine or Herbstreit's whine.

I enjoy Woodson's wine. I find that Herbie's whine has a salty taste and too many sour notes.

+1
Very clever.

His next wine will be called Buckeye Piss after Michigan beats the piss out of the buckeyes in Columbus on Nov 26th.
November 14th, 2022 at 8:03 PM ^
That probably would not sell very well.

Their "cooler" cabernet certainly has a nose that most don't like.

"That probably would not sell very well."
It would definitely be a limited edition collectors bottle.

my son works for a wine distributor in Charleston, we'll be having some with Thanksgiving dinner!!

If you can get your hands on any Charles Woodson whiskey, I HIGHLY recommend it.
I'm a whiskey snob. I freely admit it. I'm not proud, and my bank account is not happy. So when my best friend from Michigan brought me Charles Woodson's signature whiskey, I was skeptical. Kept asking whose distillery agreed to white label for him.
It's legit GOOD. It's not amazing, but it's WAY better than average, and it's far better than its price tag.

oh wow, I was not aware he had his own whiskey. I'll have to look around for it now.

His Red Blend is outstanding and his Cab is very good. I order cases from his website since Meijer can't seem to keep it in stock.

Ooooh, grey salt, that's it! I kept thinking I was detecting faint notes of pink salt but that wasn't quite it.

Dangit, I was in such a rush to make this joke I didn't see the first reply beat me to the same thing.

Woodson's wine >> OSU's whine.

I wish he'd make some Two Buck Chuck to fit the size of my wallet.
November 14th, 2022 at 10:38 PM ^
I prefer his bourbon.
November 15th, 2022 at 4:34 AM ^
Chuck definitely wears his ascot while drinking this wine.

A few years back, Charles Woodson did an unadvertised, pop-up signing at the AA Meijer (Jackson Rd). My wife got a few bottles of Intercept signed. ... it was also a few days after my 17.5yo cat, Woodson, had passed.

I don't drink wine. I can't tell the difference between good wine or bad wine. I don't drink that much all together, so I can't tell the difference in good alcohol or bad all together, haha.

Living in KY I'm more of a bourbon guy. Now, if Woodson had his own Heisman 1997 batch I'd jump at that.

I heard it goes well with crushed Buckeye nuts.
