Women's Hoops NCAA 1st Round
Tied at 7 on ESPNU early. Some offensive struggles, if we figure it out should pull away because our defense is good.
Up 13-9 with less than a minute in the first but a bit of a turnover shit show.
Phelia makes a shot at the buzzer to make it 17-9 after 1.
Phelia's not quite herself yet after her lengthy injury layoff.
Hopefully she will Phelia better soon
25-18 at the media timeout in the second quarter. Opened up a big lead and gave some of it back. Leaving some points on the table.
Press sped us up as usual.
missed layups
missed free throws
offensive fouls
Defense tremendous. Jump shooting ehhhhhh
28-20 at half
Props to Kim Barnes Arico!!!
Maddie getting hot was a requirement to make a real run.
Go Blue!
Defense still suffocating, Brown distributing. 48-31 M, nearing the end of the third quarter.
we are up 48-31 against a 31-2 UNLV team.
2 minutes left in the third.
go blue.
Full RNG mode for the officials, who have changed the standards of physicality allowed in the middle of the third quarter.
Hobbs with a tremendous clean block but called a foul.
That was absolutely a clean block - the shooter was out of control and went down on her own.
Gee, what a shock: tournament time, clean block, but foul called on us. Such a great effort/play, too.
Unwatchable. The refs think the game is about them.
That block so clean
54-43 Michigan after 3
Phelia at 100% is such a talented player. She's clearly not 100%, but still.
she does seem limited offensively, but man does she defend.
Go Ladies! You'all have developed a winning culture, let's keep at it! Go Blue!
Michigan holds on and their two opponents in the first two rounds (assuming LSU wins) would have a combined record of 60-4.
best game we’ve played in weeks, probably since the win at east lansing on feb 5.
Free throws - 78.6%
3Pts - 46.2%
Field goals - 47.3%
Interesting that Brown's not out there right now, color commentator noticed a limp earlier.
71-59 Final Off to the second round
Very controlled win against a 31-2 team riding a 22 game winning streak. Regardless of the conference that's hard to do.
Oh yeah. Well done, women.
Go Hawai'i! But we probably get Mulkey again. Ew.
Win the game! Won the game!
Go Blue! Beat LSU or Hawaii.
Mich Hockey tomorrow and Mich Women's BB again on Sunday. LFG!!! Hoping for a Michigan weekend!!!
It's not the big dance, but don't forget that the men also play tomorrow against Vandy.
Also, looks like W Swimming/Diving and Wrestling are both at the NCAA championships, and W Gymnastics at B1G championships tomorrow.
Thanks for reminding me. Wasn't sure when the Men's game was. Makes for an even bigger MICH weekend.
And Michigan men bball at Vandy at noon EST tomorrow -
It's great watching Pitt (who Michigan beat by 31) advance by beating a dead Big 12 team after watching Maryland (who Michigan beat by 35) advance by beating another big 12 team yesterday as well as Northwestern (who Michigan beat twice handily) advance by beating boise and sparty (who Michigan beat by double digits, like every team above) advance by beating usc...great watching all these teams that Michigan beat advance, yet Michigan didn't beat anybody.
Not salty.
Hail to the Victors! Moving on! Beat next!
Emily Kiser and Maddie Nylon (4/6 from 3) w/18 pts ea, Leigha Brown with 17. Laila Phelia just w/8 pts, but led the team w/11 (!) rbs, 6 orb. Kiser had 10 rbs.
Not much scoring off the bench: Elise Stuck with 2 pts, but also 7 rbs.
Very impressive win! The Mountain West may not be the upper tier of the B1G but you would think it the equal of the MAC. And to beat the champion that lost only two games so badly is surprising to me, though I am well aware that M is a very good team. Shows the strength of the B1G.
From the frying pan to the fire with LSU! Go Blue!
Michigan gets rewarded for beating 31-2 UNLV (on a 22W streak) by playing 29-2 LSU, @ LSU, who is 16-0 at home. Should've been given a 4-seed. I get there were a few Ls late against top teams while shorthanded, but what a gauntlet.
Officiating going to be a big deal on Sunday. LSU fouls a LOT but isn't being called for it.
Angel Reese, LSU's leading scorer, just limped off not putting much if any weight on her right leg. Seems to be walking on it now at halftime though.
You may remember her from her time at Maryland, where Emily Kiser kicked her ass last year.
Fun stat: KBA is 10-0 in the 1st round of the tournament now (6-0 at M). Pretty remarkable. IIRC Beilein was undefeated in the first game of the Big Ten tournament.

If they can play like this my ladies bracket should be strong. Have them in the Final Four!
Go Blue!
