Will Muschamp lets suspended Gators off the hook after 'terminated' game

Submitted by boliver46 on

I actually like Will Muschamp.  His distaste for Urban Meyer is pretty well known around this blog, and certainly wins him points.

For those who don't know, Muschamp suspended 3 players for the opener against Idaho.  But then the game against Idaho was suspended due to weather and ultimately will never be played.

So then this:

But the non-game did serve one purpose. It allowed Florida coach Will Muschamp to free three players from disciplinary jail based on time served. Gators Darious Cummings, Demarcus Robinson and Jay-nard Bostwick were reinstated after being suspended for a game that wasn’t played.

Interesting....

So if there is a winner from The Opener That Never Happened, it’s the three Florida Gators who got off with time served. One play.

Thoughts?  Say the App State game was cancelled - would we be ok with Glasgow playing the next game?

I'd like to think Hoke has enough integrity to uphold a suspension until a game is actually played and recorded. Is Florida's next game against a cupcake? Not that reinstating a player because they are playing a formiddable opponent is justifiable, just makes it kind of lousier if he is reinstating them just to play in a game that is already an easy W.

I think Chris Creighton will be able to get this team to bowl games consistently.  I haven't had a chance to see the "Factory" in person yet so I will hold off on judgement of the re-branding until then.  Hopefully by the time MSU visits in 2020 they will be able to field a competitive team.

It shouldn't be impossible to recruit to Ypsi as it is the closest MAC program to Metro Detroit.  Obviously safety is a concern though when you have a player murdered.  Hopefully the community can turn that image around.

Secondly coaches simply don't get hired away from EMU they get fired.  Ron Cooper in 1994 was the last coach at EMU that was hired away to another HC gig.  Every coach since then has been fired and is yet to be a HC elsewhere.  Their records probably had something to do with that.

I'm not saying EMU will be a ranked team but being competitive in conference and winning say 7 or 8 games a year is not asking too much. The right coach can make a big difference and I hope Creighton is that coach.

They've got the current #1, #2, #6, #12, #21, and #24 teams on the docket.  Not sure they win any of those.  So, they end up at best 5-6.  Can they make a bowl?  With the new rules, in order:

  1. 6-6 with one win against FCS - Nope
  2. 6-6 with two wins against FCS - Nope
  3. 6-7 with one loss in conference championship - Nope
  4. 6-7 for a team with a 13 game season (like teams who travel to Hawaii) - Nope
  5. 6-6 for a team that is in transition from FCS to FBS - Nope
  6. 5 win team that is in the top five of APR - That takes a bit more - Duke, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Utah State, Boise State, oops that makes five... UCF...Michigan...South Florida...Miami...OSU...ah, here's Florida somewhere around #50

So, they may have needed a win against the Vandals.  And those are the same Vandals who are banned from post season anyways, due to low APR.

Take the money and run, Private Idaho.

"It's not just about suspending players for games," Muschamp said. "There's a lot of things that go into discipline. It's about altering and changing behavior, which we've done.

Muschamp has a pretty good track record. Play on

I assume that the whole week went on min-shaming these players too. Sure, the 3 hours of gametime didn't happen, but the 12342424 (approximate) hours of game prep did. These guys didn't run with the 1s in practice for the week, were gameplanned around as being out, were dragged through the media as "suspended" etc. From Muschamp's perspective the suspension (week long, not just the 3 hours of the game) was served. I think I agree with that decision.

I know this one. The answer is: Yes. Already decided. They will play against the mighty Eastern Michigan team from Ypsilanti. Our Eagles will fly to the Swamp for a beatdown by Muschamp's Gatorites. After Idaho decided not to fly back during their bye week and Florida decided it didn't want to play a cupcake during the conference season, the coach decided to give a repreive to those players suspended for Saturday's rainout extravaganza with the  Vandals.

And guess what, the Vandals get a lovely parting gift just for having shown up for the season's opening round of Jeopardy in Gainsville, a lovely $997,000 check. That and all the millions in ticket refunds that now must be made for the mutual decision not to replay this game. And even if it technically was a no-contest, don't tell the coach his suspended players didn't suffer in agony more than others during the anxiously long delay before cancellation was finally announced.

The point of missing a game is that one is visibly disciplined.  Actually missing a game is meaningless.  If the fact that missing a game only meant missing 60 minutes of time on the clock, then missing nay game would count as an identical punishment to missing the next game.  But that's not how it works.  No one suspends a player for a game four weeks into the future.  they suspend them for preparation for, and playing, the next game.  If that game doesn't occur, or they get injured and couldn't have played the game anyway, the punishment is still served and done.

"Visibly" disciplined eludes to pleasing public perception, not actually making the players lose out on something they cared about. And trust me, they did not lose a week of preparation, they were still out there practicing like everyone else.

My Jimmies are not really rustled too much by this. The suspension hanging over their head, the missed practice, etc is way worse than actually not playing a game, especially a cupcake. It's not the players' fault that the game got cancelled, it just was.

Nothing is worse than not playing in the game. They still busted their asses during the week, probably on scout team to allow their replacements to get some reps. That alone hurts for established guys. But going through a week of practice and not getting the payoff is a motherfucker of the highest order.

If the game were being rescheduled, I would think they should sit out this week, but as it's not, whatever. The punishment of being suspended was real, and if the players can't learn their lesson despite a cancellation, I don't think an extra week was going to really matter anyway. Since their punishment was announced, they expected to not play last Saturday, and that's what occurred. The only wrinkle is that no one played.

Apparently, lesson learned without the actual punishment for this particular lesson having been technically meted out, and, in fact, because of a  fate suffered by all. In this case, universal pardon for a sin without judgment. I can live with that.

I don't know...Utah may be a better opponent but if you think Miami is a better matchup than EMU I'm not so sure. Miami is bad. Really bad. Even with our new coach. Going to games last year felt like I was watching a sub part high school football team, and I'm a Miami fan.

Yeah, they were awful a year ago. Honestly, I'd prefer Michigan to go away from the MAC for a little while. I like how our schedule sets up in the next few years with playing Oregon State, Utah, UNLV, BYU, SMU, Air Force, and Cincy.

The matchups vs CMU, WMU, and EMU have been played out. Obviously, I want to see us play two good matchups, nine B1G games, and then somewhat of a cupcake. I don't want to see the same teams over and over from the same region again.

Throw in somewhat competitive teams from around the country every year: Marshall, Colorado State, Army, and Houston are all teams that had some success in the past and would be a welcome away from playing the typical MAC opponent.

I wouldn't consider myself a life long fan by any means, but when you attend the school (I'm a sophomore this year), I feel like I should probably root for them in sports. Though no one exaclty pays much attention to any specific sports team besides hockey, I'd still consider the student body to be "fans". At the very least we aren't rooting against Miami, I'll say that haha. I was accepted to Michigan, but when I would be paying out of state tuition and Miami came calling with a scholarship, it was hard to pass up.

or a game requires. I mean techinally they went to OT to keep that game alive because they waited longer than the usual game- playing time to get the contest in. So, actually, now the university may owe those guys for  going overboard in their case.

The suspended players still missed a game. Granted, everyone else did too, but with a self imposed suspension, I think it's the coaches call. If this were an NCAA suspension, I'm not sure if feel differently, but if have to think a little more.

Muschamp seems like a decent enough coach and his hatred of Urbs makes himevenbetter. The players have served their time.

What will be really fishy is if ND has their suspended players back on Saturday.

as well as yourself. They had no negative consequence or removal of something positive due to their actions. Muschamp is not doing these players any favors for letting them off easy. I would expect Hoke to hold out Glasgow for the ND game if the App St. game were cancelled. They are in the business of building young men with character.
