Why is OSU football so soft?

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on March 12th, 2023 at 9:20 PM

How did OSU football get so soft?  Theories?

I believe teams emulate the personality of their leaders, starting with the head coach.  So obviously, I look at Day. Too much passing, shit run game, national program of highest talent mercenaries, D-line not ready when faced with legit run gane opponent.

In our case, Harbaugh is old school, yet smart, man-ball and team embraces the identity.  Grind the opponent down.

So I ask, is it all coaching /program culture, is there a recruiting angle to this, or is it just overblown by the two beating they’ll endured vs UM over the last 2 years.

While there's some truth to that, Day has exactly one playoff win (over Clemson in 2020) against three losses. In two of the losses they blew two-score leads and in the third (the title game against Alabama in 2020) they were blown out and I don't think they ever led.

The Ohio State team that did win the national title was Urban Meyer's run spread, and even Urban didn't do so well in his only other playoff appearance (the 31-0 loss to Clemson).

Lol huh?

Day is 1-3, Harbaugh is 0-2.

Neither program has been good in CFP games, both have run up against the buzz saw that is Georgia...both have had a CFP game that they should've won and didn't.

OSU isn't built to win CFP games any more than Michigan is...if anything, Michigan beating OSU the last 2 years is the biggest "CFP" level win either team has had. Especially last year, beating undefeated #2.

"... but have run up against the buzz saw that is Georgia ..."

That's where the similarity ends. I really believe this year's game was an irregular one for Georgia, but even so OSU was way more competitive against them than Michigan was the prior year. It's not even close.

This is exactly the thing that let's them get on top...underestimating them. It permeates the fan base and then our players who are in it's community.   They arent soft.  They are formidable, and will always be, as it should be.

Our fanbase has changed. The losing and the rise of the SEC is what permeates through our fanbase. Keyboard warriors who talk shit and act like base asses on Twitter are part of our fanbase.

The thing is...you can say that about EVERY fanbase nowadays. It sucks. The lines are blurred and no fanbase has an identity anymore - some are just worse than others.

There was a day when Michigan was the arrogant, wine and cheese, but respect every opponent type of fanbase.

Then BPONE happened for Michigan and the SEC's "win at all cost and be obnoxious doing it" brought on a new wave of CFB fans. We used to be above it all...now we're really not much better than MSU or OSU.

I miss the days where we ignored MSU, not because we didn't respect them...but because it drove them CRAZY to not have our attention. We gave Notre Dame more attention than MSU and the cried, cried, and cried more. Hence, "little brother." But now we compare ourselves to them just like they do to us.

There used to be days where we'd never act like we were better than OSU, we just BELIEVED it. And far more often than not, we were correct. They were the drunk, trash, piece of shit fanbase and everything we didn't want to be.

But here we are in 2023, times change...just have to roll with it. Not much we can do about it anymore, it's just different.

Has the fanbase really changed or has social media exposed the diversity of the fanbase that has always existed?

Too much me mentality. I thought listening to Stroud's comments after this years game he sounded alot of me me me. Also players talked about how much more laid back it was when Day took over. Urban ran a machine, like Saban.  I don't know if the last 2 michigan teams could have beat Urban coached teams. Would have been interesting.

I think the last two Michigan teams would have a beat an Urban lead team. We actually run a scheme in our secondary to defend against crossing routes! We actually have D-line depth to rotate. Our O-line is unstoppable. I know for a fact the last two teams would have beaten an urban lead team.

It always interests me how people come up with posts like this. OP was just sitting on his couch watching the Oscars and the thought of "why is OSU so soft?" just randomly popped into his head and he needed to tell everyone

OSU was a field goal away from winning the national title. That isn't soft. They were an elite team. They came in with a bad defensive gameplan and Michigan had the athletes to punish them for it.
