Whats the word on '11 QB Kevin Sousa?

Submitted by MaizeRAGE in FLA on
He goes to the local high school and is listed in the Elite 11 Regional Camp at Disney. He lists Michigan in his interests so I was curious to see what the recruiting gurus thought/know of him. FWIW His team was dreadful but it was also the schools first year in existence. RIVALS PAGE Sophomore Highlights

Another M blog (forgive me, I can't remember which one offhand) recently published a pretty big article about the kid. The gist of it was basically "If Michigan offers, I would probably pick Michigan." I'll wrap it up in the next Wednesday Recruitin'.

Has a good arm, and looks like a solid prospect. I can't imagine the coaches offering him until we have more OL and LB commitments, though. He doesn't look like someone who could play multiple positions.

a) I wasn't saying that he would play another position or that he would have to accept offers for another position. I was saying that the analysis of "He doesn't look like he could play another position" was jumping to conclusions based on those highlights. He only took off running on about three plays, and two of those runs were pretty impressive. The third was...meh. b) He's not the #2 quarterback in Florida. He's the #2 quarterback in *Central* Florida, according to those ratings posted above.

The t.v. folks are probably already cooking up corny plays-on-words ... "Sousa really knows how to march his team down the field" ... "Sousa is a master at tempo and rhythm" ... "Is he composed or what?" ...

Braxton Miller is the recruit maybe the coaches are waiting to see if they can snag, but if they can't they might have a back-up plan of Kevin Sousa.

There are other quarterbacks with offers right now so, logically, those are the main targets at this point. Braxton Miller Christian Lemay Cardale Jones Kiehl Frazier Not saying that we're getting these guys, or that Sousa isn't going to get offered, but they're not putting all their eggs in the Braxton Miller basket.

OT The Tigers had a very good relief pitcher in the early 80's Kevin Saucier, who inexplicably lost the ability to control his pitches. Saucier lost his control seemingly overnight, kind of similar to Rich Ankiel's fate as a pitcher with the Cardinals. Saucier was a fan favorite and I am certain any older Tiger fans will remember him

I am not a recruiting insider, so this is just my opinion. I dont think we will take a QB in this upcoming class unless by some miracle we land Miller,Lemay, or Jones. Landing Devin Gardner in this recruiting class will make it hard to land another elite QB in 2011. It is with great pleasure I say that we are pretty solid at this position.

Michigan might not get a top-flight quarterback in the 2011 class, but they will take a quarterback. Keep in mind that Denard Robinson is likely to change positions before next year and there's also a chance that Conelius Jones could play elsewhere. I personally think that Jones will stick at quarterback, but assuming Robinson changes, that only gives us 3 scholarship quarterbacks in 2011. Rodriguez has said that he likes to have 5-6 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster at all times. I think we'll end up with a "project" or a guy with kind of a low ceiling. The guys we've currently offered might be pipe dreams.

I can't think of too many years where we haven't taken a qb. You're right about it being harder to land an elite prospect due to the "lack of immediate playing time" angle, but not getting anyone for the position is not likely to happen.

The thing about the offense we run, is that we can take a recruit who wants to play QB, but can't at most other big schools, this Sousa kid might fall into this category. Every year we will try to get a major prospect at QB, and the last 2 years we were able to do that. This year we probably won't get a top notch guy to commit, but we'll pick up a kid like Conelius from last year who is a project at QB, and if he doesn't pan out, or we pick up an elite QB the year after, he can switch to another position.
