What Newcomer Are You Most Excited To See This Fall?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on August 16th, 2023 at 8:43 PM

The question, what newcomer* are you most excited to see this fall?

*Newcomer = any transfer, true freshman, or redshirt freshman

(sorry, if you were planning to answer "Tyler Morris," he does not qualify - it's newcomer, not "breakout player")

Absent a surefire transfer like Olu was, I think the next best thing will be a guy like Hausmann who produced very well at a high level in the same conference. I think he's gonna be an extra bullet in the chamber we didn't have last year.

EDIT: I also think of the freshman, Deakon Tonielli is already the right weight for a Tight End and has been doing well in camp from what I remember reading, so he seems most likely to be a contributor.

Hausmann. I'm worried the noise on Stewart is bluster and he won't be able to do a lot against b10 competition. Hope I'm wrong. Seems like okie. Might be good in moments. Will earn more time as we go, but...

He's going to produce more than Okie, I'd wager. He looked the part in the spring game. He produced at a high level for Coastal Carolina, and was graded very well by PFF. He added weight. Camp hype is there.

I don't think he'll be All-Conference but I think it's reasonable to project 6-8 sacks and a good amount of pressure on passing downs

Stewart produced more at Costal Carolina than Okie ever did and Stewart also looked great in the spring game. Also, let's not act like Okie wasn't a solid contributor. Would've loved to have him another year and see how he would've developed

Jyaire Hill.  Prolly gonna be special teams and mop up the first half of the season but by the back half I think his talent will have him pushing for CB2.  I dont think they can afford to RS him.

Seconding this.  The way his HS coach talked about him and the recruiting guys talked about him, I think he could be special. I know we needed a CB in the class of his caliber badly, so he was an important addition for that reason, but people talk about him as the kind of athlete that you want on your team even if you had 3 Will Johnsons ahead of him. This staff seems to be particularly adept at finding these guys who are excellent players but maybe not getting the full hype they deserve as recruits (Colston Loveland, Mason Graham, etc...) and I think Hill might be the next one in that category.

On defense I’m excited about Jyaire Hill. I think he will help add depth and skill to our secondary by November. On offense I’m excited about Karmello English. I think he has makings to step up in a receiver room with a lot of questions either this year or next, lots of potential there. It’s weird I’m less excited about Nugent or Hinton only cause I’m not worried if they weren’t here for their position as transfers.

I guess I'm wondering what the RB room is going to look like next year after Corum and Edwards leave for the NFL. So I'm interested to see what Cabana and Hall can do as true freshmen (along with Stokes, who doesn't count for the question). Not sure they'll get much opportunity outside of mop-up time, though.

I know it is off topic but I also want to see what Stokes can do. He had a rough time last year but was just a freshman and was asked to do an awful lot. Whomever is our RB3 is going to get some solid PT and I hope that Stokes can be that guy and then once again pair with one of our great young backs next year.

I would be absolutely floored

A guy who's never played RB, who's not repping there now, is not going to be our top 2024 back when guys like Stokes, Hall, and Cabana are currently on the roster, not to mention Jordan Marshall, assuming he inks on the dotted line?

He has a higher shot at being QB1 than even moving to RB, IMO. Much less being RB1. This is just a crazy take

Probably LaDarius Henderson. If all goes according to plan at LT I think he’s the kind of player that could elevate the offense to elite. Ryan Hayes was a great player but he didn’t have the potential 1st round athleticism that Henderson has, and those are the improvements on the margin that can *maybe* push this team past the Georgia’s of the world.

I’m interested in the Mgostaff’s reading of the tea leaves on this one because you’re right that the chatter has been heavy on the incumbents, but Harbaugh did mention that these battles will go through the first few games. To me that reads like him wanting to give Henderson a longer runway since he wasn’t here in the spring, with Barnhart at RT and Henderson at LT.

I guess I've just been on a long cycle. I started paying attention to recruiting like 12 years ago, then came across this site, then followed everything way too close. Now I've turned of Twitter and unsubscribed from those types od podcasts. I guess I was hoping more would be here, but it isn't trickling to this site as much as it has in the past. It's fine.

I read Karsen has been competing mostly at LT which is surprising since Henderson was penciled in at LT by most with Karsen competing at RT.

Harbaugh certainly likes his competition and nobody is entitled. It sounds like this will play out into the season. The “Michigan Method” it’s being called.

Harbaugh also said Karsen is having the best camp of any of the lineman and can play every position. Don’t forget the dude could seriously slam the basketball on HS team.

It going to be interesting to watch.

This sounds to me like two things.
1. Harbaugh loves competition, and if K Barnhart beats out Henderson for LT, the position is his.
2. K Barnhart is being prepared to be a 6th man who can play every position (or at least 4) on the line.

I would bet on Henderson winning the position from Barnhart down the line, but for everyone's sake (The Team, Henderson, Barnhart), Henderson has to clearly win that position - it can't be given to him.  I would bet it looks a bit like JJ and Cade last year (but probably more in practice than in games, b/c I doubt ECU, UNLV, or BGSU will offer the competition to test their pass protection.

Yeah the Hawkeyes better pray that Cade isn’t too banged up after that injury because without him that offense will be putrid and I’m not sure if their fans will put up with another year of their defense being the best way to score points.

I'll be watching Iowa whenever I can. I don't think Cade is really that good of a college QB but with Iowa's D/ST he might be good enough to get Iowa to double digit wins as long as they have a functioning run game. If they can't figure out the OL and run game, Iowa's offense is still gonna be horrendous. Cade isn't magically gonna turn that mess into gold
