What is the most ridiculous thing you would do for a MSM National Championship?

I would accept students with a 2.0 GPA and a 12 on their ACTs because they had football talent.

But not 1.9 GPAs and/or 11s on the ACT.

I mean, a guy's gotta have standards!

Cheers!

So it's ridiculous that we don't have lower admissions standards than Florida State?  They also rejected Dorsey.

I find it ridiculous that so many here attack our admissions department for rejecting Dorsey when they had far more information at their disposal to make that decision than any of us did.   They go through this process every year.  At this point they're qualified to make educated guesses about who will succeed academically here and who won't.

I'm bitter about the fact that they draw an arbitrary line instead of really go through a process to make an educated guess.

My complaint is about Dorsey in particular. The reason RR recruited him was because he came with the thumbs up directly from a former M asst. coach (who now has him at Louisville). That recommendation said that everyone around Dorsey is f-ed up and not to be trusted, but once you get Demar away from them, he is a bright kid and will succeed. Admissions didn't countenance that. They looked at what was done to get Dorsey to meet the minimum for NCAA eligibility, as if achieving a 2.5 GPA with no funny business is all you really need to suceed. That, in and of itself, was the most embarassing part of all of this. Until this moment, Admissions' rationale for accepting lower standards was that there is something else about these athletes, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, that they have already shown which is above and beyond what other students can bring to the table.

Steve Breaston. Not a fantastic student. Got the minimum. But Lloyd vouched for the kid, because Breaston had a deep understanding of a world 99 percent of M students will never visit. That perspective was a net benefit to Breaston's classmates throughout his career, and now serves the university for having produced an NFLer who can translate that perspective to the world.

Admission's job is NOT to take the MOST DESERVING students, but to build a Freshman Class that will spark and challenge each other intellectually, and who will graduate to be successful and give the university prestige and money. Defaulting to NCAA standards is giving up the ballgame. The recommendation from Vance Bedford was the reason Rodriguez stood behind Dorsey. If we're getting a guy even close to the minimum GPA and test scores, the points here or there, and what the people around Dorsey were doing to get there, were not the main concerns: the kid himself, and what he could offer intellectually to the university community should have been. Admissions demonstrated distrust of RR and Bedford, and/or showed their hand to have been playing exaclty the same game that the pants-creasing Young Republican jackoffs selling racially priced bagels accused them of.

That said, you're right that this post and the one above it are in bad taste for the topic of this thread. I'll leave them, but feel free to neg the shit out of me for doing so.

Honost question here: How are you sure this is how it works?

Remember the dude that posted on here that works with admissions at another major school?  From what he said, it isn't quite like that.

Also, from most of what we learned about Dorsey, it would appear he wasn't close enough to the "arbitrary line" that the admissions department could make an exception.

I agree with the sentiment of your post - the goal should be to build the best freshman class possible.  However, at some point you have to honostly ask whether or not a student can succeed at Michigan.  Unfortunately, I think most of us know that not everyone can and it would be a disservice to both the University and the student to put that student in a position to fail from the get-go.

We're totally in the wrong forum. I shouldn't have opened my mouth to begin with.

I read that, and my bitterness is probably getting the better of me, and I'm probably wrong as all getup about the process they went through. My point sucks and I'm mostly upset that RR and Bedford are standing behind a guy and asking all of us to trust them, and then that trust was betrayed.

In a non life threatening capacity, there's no question about that.

I would probably - emphasis on probably - take one  in a life threatening place too, just it would have to come with a Heisman Winner as well and perhaps a streak of National Championships. USC like, but without the sanctions.

I have googled, searched this site, and even tried to come up with ideas myself first.

But what the heck does MSM stand for?

Damn it, it's times like these that make me feel more like an outsider.. but it's driving me crazy not to ask.

Please don't neg-bomb me

I would become a troll on another website.

Seriously, I can't think of a bigger waste of time or more unfulfilling prospect than to be a troll.  I don't know how those people do it and am absolutely fascinated with the complete lack of importance they place on their own time.  Even the Rosie/Blunden sex scenario, or possibly getting hit in the face with someone's wang, would give you a good story or two to tell the next time you are at a party.
