If any of those alums have a dream of being the head coach for Michigan, the move might be to find a promotion elsewhere. If I were in their shoes, I'd look at it like this:

  • If Moore does well, he could be the head coach at Michigan for a long time. As a result, my career growth has an obvious ceiling at Michigan.
  • If he does poorly, the athletic department likely won't promote from within again. There's a good chance they clean house or keep me on staff while they bring in a big splash hire.
  • If Moore does well and has NFL aspirations (or is lured back to Oklahoma where he once played), I could possibly see myself promoted from within. Doesn't seem likely.
  • If I leave and prove my value as a coordinator and/or head coach, I will be high on the list for a replacement when they move on from Moore. Given the typical life-span of college coaches nowadays, this is probably the most likely path of becoming a head coach at Michigan.

Webb has said quite a few times that he thinks Hart is dealing with something off the field. If it is personal, its not my place to speculate what that specific issue might or might not be, but his absence has gone on for quite a while.

Which leads me to believe that either there is something pretty serious going on in his personal life, or that Moore has given Hart his vision for how his offensive staff looks next year, Hart doesn't like his place in it, and he's exploring his options.

Kinda wish Moore had pushed Elston and Clink out the door faster. If those guys had left on Minter’s timeline, Moore wouldn’t have had to appear so flat footed in this transition.

That and retained Roney to pair w/ Scruggs. These days you need specialized DL and OLB/Edge Rushers coaches more than you need multiple coaches for the secondary.

EDIT: That said - if BJM falls through, maybe they should hire both the Texans’ Safeties coach AND Lamar Morgan, giving both a little more coordinator responsibilities while turning the LBs over to Wink.

HE may have wanted them to stay, but they clearly weren't as amenable to his terms as would've been necessary to keep them. There was zero controversy over other guys whose roles were clear (i.e., Newsome (who Harbaugh really wanted), and Campbell and Bellamy (scant public rumors on Harbaugh's interest or lack thereof)). I'm not working with perfect information, but I just wonder if it wouldn't have been better to expedite those departures, thus minimizing some of the negativity those moves stirred up both inside and outside of the program.

As close as we were to getting the Notre Dame guy or as close as we were to retaining Clink? Or more like as close as we were to getting Harbaugh a new contract back in November?

Check the receipt in a few months.  Hart was not a Harbaugh friend. He never actually let go of the dispute they got in when Harbaugh was at Stanford and dissed the M classes.  You can believe it or not. You can neg me, but a group of people very close to the situation confirm this is the reason for the silence and departure.

Assuming all basically goes to plan and they settle on BJM and Morgan/Adegoke, this is a pretty good defensive staff with Wink at the top.  You've got guys who can likely recruit up and down the position groups, and I think Wink can scheme up a good game against most teams.

Also it's sorta cool that I think the entire defensive staff save Wink will be African American, which you hope continues the pattern Harbaugh started where he hired a number of up-and-coming younger AA coaches and then gave them chances to grow beyond that (both Hart and Moore got chances to be HC for games this year, and obviously Moore took over for Harbaugh).  I read somewhere that Maryland's staff was the only majority-Black staff in CFB this past year, and if these hires go as expected I think UM would also hold that designation this coming year.  Just sort of cool.
