Way OT - Star Wars The Bad Batch

Submitted by tennis_labeef on May 15th, 2021 at 11:28 AM

Just started watching the new series on Disney Plus. Follows a squad of genetically enhanced clones that aren’t affected by Order 66. I’m a sucker for any Star Wars canon content, and the building of the new Empire is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting SW story lines.

Anyone else on the board check out the first couple of episodes? Did you get a chance to watch The Clone Wars and Rebels shows as well? Curious to know what you all think!

I'm on board for sure.

Clone Wars was hard to get into, but once I did I loved it to death. The last season is a masterpiece, with visuals that rival the movies. Had to watch Rebels because I was starving for content. That show felt even more targeted towards kids, but damn the high points were as good as anything Clone Wars put out.

I'm expecting the Bad Batch to live up to the hype. First two episodes were good & okay respectively. Still gotta catch the third. It seems to have bumped the next Marvel show, Loki, over to Wednesday releases. So Disney must thing it's got a gem on it's hands.

Could not agree more with your statement. The last season of clone wars, particularly the last 4 or 5 episodes, was unbelievable. Rebels was tough for me to get into at first, because like you said, it is definitely geared towards a younger audience - but some of the characters and story lines that are included more than make up for the clunker episodes.

All are great. For non clone wars watchers, I would just run the essential episodes of clone wars as there are so many episodes and the essentials are the ones that really drive the Star Wars cannon.

havent watched yesterday’s bad batch episode, but so far so good

I would say either this:

or this:

are good places to start.  Both were made before the final season but the final season is only 12 eps and you should watch all of it after everything else.  Also IIRC, Disney+ itself has a curated list of 'essential' eps

Edit: this is one guy's rating of everything up thru season 6 but doesn't necessarily curate the series into essential arcs to watch:  https://www.reddit.com/r/TheCloneWars/wiki/recommended  It does list the episodes in chronological order which the series itself doesnt do.  I personally didn't care either way but if you wanna go full nerd, I'm hardly one to judge.

Been pretty good so far, as with pretty much anything Dave Filoni touches. (Maybe we can sign him to coach/recruit defensive tackle?)

It feels like the series is really gonna be really about what happens right after RotSith, and the hijinks of the titular Bad Batch squad will be merely an entry point to witness that.  The first episode was terrific and the next two have been ok.  I am annoyed at myself that I missed the one really cool Easter egg that I shoulda caught but I am certain there are more in store.

FYI even though it is on Disney+ and it is a cartoon, for any parents here some of the stuff might be a bit dark for small kids but obviously you know them best. Overall there is far worse stuff out there.

Gotta check it out. I'm a big time SW stan. Hell, I even liked the sequel trilogy despite it falling flat in a lot of places. There's a few Star Wars YouTube channels that I follow that I highly recommend; Star Wars Theory, Stupendous Wave, and Star Wars Reading club that have superb content.

They really add more depth to the saga, and made me look at the movies in a different light.

The common criticism I hear (which I overall agree with) is the prequels are an interesting story that is told quite poorly and the sequels are an uninteresting story told fairly well.  I'm a bit of an heretical duck in that I mostly liked episode 8 - however I get a lot of the criticisms surrounding it, the greatest of which is that it made its companion movies worse.; as opposed to the original trilogy movies that made each other better.

Yeah, both trilogies are really flawed basically for the reasons you mentioned. Lucas needed a JJ Abrams type director (or really anyone other than Lucas) for the prequel trilogy and the sequel trilogy needed Filoni (or Lucas) to provide a coherent story that fit in with the rest of the mythology.

I think episode 8 would be my favorite of the sequels too despite it not making much sense in the context of the trilogy.

I despised episode eight for what it did to Luke, for what I viewed as a failure to develop or explain Rey. That said …

I think all of the sequel Films are individually good. Episode eight is a good movie if it was just a standalone movie. Rex the sequels for me is that individually and collectively (as a follow on to each other and the original six) they are one giant non sequitur..

I think Johnson is an excellent Director, but a crappy one for what they were trying to do with Star Wars. They really needed to have somebody like Filoni and Favreau be there almost like a Kevin feige for Star Wars. Someone who liked and respected the story and who liked and respected the fans.

of the standalone films, rogue one Has to be my favorite.

Have seen most of clone wars and rebels. I honestly much prefer them to the sequels/prequels. Especially the sequels. TLJ was trash. Anakin in the clone wars and the clones themselves are tragic figures.

I’m really digging the bad batch. Love the characters and love how Filoni develops them.

IMHO if Disney is smart they start another Movie but let Favreau/Filoni have the reigns.

I haven’t watched any of the animated series (but have heard some good things about some of the more recent clone wars seasons, but I CAN’T WAIT for the Obi Wan series.

I’m really intrigued by them bringing Hayden Christensen back for the series, whether it’ll be him being in flashbscks or pseudo-hallucinations just taunting Obi Wan for his failure in letting him fall. I know a lot of people didn’t like Anakin in the prequels but given what Disney has been able to do with the Mandalorian I am very excited. I think they can bring his character some new life.

I've been torn about this series but based on the boards response I am thinking I will give it a shot.  I agree with a lot of of the opinions expressed so far about the saga in this thread.  Everything said about TCW, Rebels, RO, and the trilogies have been pretty spot on IMO.  This might have been the most civil online discussion I have ever witnessed involving any divisive franchise.  Perhaps we should do this more often around here.
