Wake up! It's Game Day!

Submitted by cGOBLUEm on September 24th, 2022 at 6:19 AM

Good morning MGoBoard members. It's game day and game 1 of conference play! I can't wait to watch Michigan assert its dominance on the field today.

What are you all doing before the game? I'm getting a little early morning studying done and will probably throw the football with my sons mid-morning. Then, I'm glued to the couch for the remainder of the day (I know, pretty unproductive, but mental health days are important too).

Go Blue, and enjoy the day!

 I know, pretty unproductive

Wait, what? You are studying and then you’re going to toss a football with your sons? And then watch M football?

That’s a PRODUCTIVE day in my book!

I have the usual Saturday daddy-daughter donut run this morning.  Then heading over with the kiddo to my brother's house for some pre-game tailgate fun before we watch the game.

Then football all day!

Go Blue!

it was girls basketball that was the game-changer for me.  if you'd have asked me decades ago about my interest level in said sport i would've made some sort of dismissive noise.  fast forward a decade or two and oldest daughter goes to the state finals twice, winning the second time, and both games were heart-attack specials.

now youngest daughter is in high school and is a sniper getting recruited as a 1.  i absolutely love her dedication to the sport and the games are every bit as gripping as the various sons' football games.

When the kids are little it's hard, often on Moms more than Dads, but when they grow into their own independent beings and you get to experience life with them instead of care for them all of the time it's the absolute best. Sports, music, common interests, life milestones, Michigan games, even rainy indoor days, all are better as a parent with your kid(s) nearby. Never would have believed it when I was in my 20's. Now I'm approaching 60 and my absolute favorite thing in life is being a dad. End nostalgic download.

we're 'harvesting' cattle this morning.  isn't everyone?

will wait until it gets at least somewhat light outside, and let the sons get some sleep after last night's football game.

Well my youngest woke up at 4 AM, so I have been a semi-conscious stupor on the couch while they watch TV and climb over me

i may or may not still be awake by mid first quarter

In-laws staying with us for the weekend (with their little dog, too!)... fortunately all UM fans.

Looking forward to watching our game, but honestly want to see a few others almost more today (still hoping Dick Vitale somehow shows up for this undefeated Duke-Kansas football matchup).

At the moment, I am sipping coffee and typing this post. These are difficult to achieve simultaneously, of course, but they are close enough in temporal proximity that it is nearly as if they are being doing at the same time. Nearly. I mean, if you were to put a stopwatch on it, clearly there is task separation here.

ANYWAY....

I am trying to get myself to a point where I am sufficiently awake for this game today. Despite nearly 20 years of life in a public utility, plus a brief and inglorious stint in IT before that, I am still not a morning person.

I’ll be watching the game from the Diplomat hotel in Florida. Then making my way up to Tampa for business and a possible cat 3 hurricane. I can handle 2 foot of snow, but this will be a new one for me. Go blue.

I’m gonna be riding it out in a Marriott, newer place, so hopefully they have all the cool hurricane proof BS that one would need. I tried to get water today and no go at my first stop. Being from the north I’d buy beer, milk and bread, even though I don’t consume the milk or bread. Just what people do. As I sit here pondering my first hurricane I’m left with many questions. Do I go to Home Depot and by some lumber? Should I also pick up a chainsaw? This will be an unwelcome bucket list moment. A 2 week business trip is gonna turn into a full blown cluster fuk. My kids are shitting bricks and no doubt dividing my tools and toys as I type lol.

A couple of tips:

  • Make sure you fill the car up with gas in case the power goes out. Lines for gas here were an hour (or longer) last time the power went out from a hurricane. If you could find a place with gas, that is.
  • Go to the ATM and get plenty of cash. Credit card systems can be spotty when the power goes out.
  • Request a lower floor of the hotel. You don't want to get stuck walking up 10+ flights of stairs if the elevator doesn't work.
  • You should be fine for water if the city water is drinkable. It would take a pretty big catastrophe to shut down the city water supply.

I'm probably forgetting some other things. But just enjoy watching it come in. It'll start slowly with a little breeze, then some gusts will come through, then the sustained winds. Looks like you might have the eye pass right over you in Tampa, so if it gets nice for a little bit don't stray too far from the hotel and get ready for the wind to start coming from the opposite direction.

Stay safe!

Watching the kids and Gameday this morning and trying to do some picking up before the game (dad life!).

Looking forward to some turtle soup this afternoon. Go Blue, beat the Terps!

I like to dice up some roasted chiles and keep ‘em in the freezer.  I want really cold ingredients in the dough so the biscuits get a good rise.
Then add the chiles, and some fresh shredded cheddar to a standard buttermilk drop biscuit recipe.  White Lily flour, of course.

Also gobluem, I’m very jealous of your pepper volume.  Those Hatch chiles ain’t cheap!

Sweet, thanks!

They are really easy to grow. I bought seeds from New Mexico State's chile program online. Start them in March, plant out at Memorial Day.  Full sun in raised beds, very low maintenance. They bear quite a bit, so 6 plants gets you quite a lot of peppers

Taking the dog to day care and heading up to Ann Arbor for the game with my daughter.  I love homecoming and the alumni band.

I need my fix of the Big House after a game last week at the Shoe with my youngest daughter who went to the dark side.

I briefly thought about cutting the grass before the game.  Then I thought about getting some ribs on the smoker.  Then I thought about grilling up some smoked sausage for breakfast.  Then I thought about running up to Krispy Kreme for a treat.  Now I'm just thinking, fuck it all.  Sit here with my coffee and do nothing.

Is it game time yet?
