Visiting Wisconsin Fans
What kind of experience did you guys have with the visiting Wisconsin fans at the game? I thought their fanbase that came down to Ann Arbor was the most belligerent, obnoxious group I've ever seen at the Big House in my 4 years as a student here. Far worse than any traveling Buckeye or Spartan fans, or even the last Wisconsin group to come here. I was thinking maybe I just ran into the wrong people, but after reading around several Michigan blogs, it seems a lot of other Michigan fans saw the same thing.
I assume it has to with us having a down year and opposing fans taking the opportunity to kick us while we're down. Also, Wisconsin has the highest quota of "Meathead guys wearing baseball caps turned sideways and slightly tilted" I've ever seen from any school.

Ok, I shouldn't have said FAR worse than Buckeye/Spartan fans, but I still maintain they were the worst at that game.
And WolvinLA, no one has more meatheads than MSU, but the number of stupid sideways tilted hats I saw that day had my head spinning.

I went to the Michigan - Wisconsin last year expecting to be abused and that couldn't be further from the truth. The Wisky fans were great!! They love their team and they respect the opponent. I had a great time and I recommened to anyone to make a trip to Madison. It's a beautiful town with great people. After that experience I will always root for the Badgers (except for once a year!).
The only fans I've had problems with are Bucknuts (obvs) and the Illini. Lots and lots of douchbaggary going on with those folks.

I second the notion of PSU fans being excellent visitors. You'd think they'd absolutely hate our guts by now, and maybe they do internally, but they've always seemed really well-behaved in my experience. Also, the ND fans I've encountered have been pretty classy. Wisconsin fans seem more vocal in general than the previous two (which can be annoying when we're losing), but they don't instigate things.
I've never had a problem with MSU fans. Some of them may be couch-burning idiots back home in EL but enough of them have some family tie to UM that they know to keep their behavior in check when they're here. OSU fans, OTOH, can be real assholes even in our stadium.

Don't get me wrong, PSU fans have talked-trash, whatever, but that's expected, and I don't care. They were behaved, passionate, and knowledgeable.
I think these "______ fans suck" threads are dumb, merely because, as the widly differing opinions here show, some visiting Wiksy fans were first-class, some were assholes. Like any large population group on the face of the earth.

I was in section fourteen and the wisconsin fans sitting behind me were the most classless I have ever encountered. They chanted obnoxiously and non-stop for the first half.
"You Fucked Up!"-after each UM Fumble. This happened multiple times and the youngsters sitting next to me stared at their parents uncomfortably. I found this to be particularly juvenile.
"Fuck you, Eat shit."-which has nothing to do with football. Again, the youngsters. Think about the children.
"App State/ND cheers"-I have no problem with this, I actually enjoy being reminded.
"It sucks to be a Michigan Wolverine." This was fine mostly because of irony. At the end of the game a UM fan hoisted his five year old daughter on his shoulders and she pointed her tiny angry finger at the stunned UW fans and yelled. "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine. Beautiful. The children.
Also, they did some stupid ass non-football related cheers probably with profanity but too infantile to remember.
I lived in Milwaukee for six years and really didn't have any problems with UW fans. I have many friends from Madison I would watch the game with them. The group UW rolled out this year to the big house may have been an anomaly but they were annoying, classless, and crude. I held my anger the whole game and it was released with bunch of sacks, a pick six, a 58 yard Threet scramble, and a failed two point. The Wisconsin fans went quiet and refused eye contact like dogs after a reprimand. I am proud that the Michigan fans cheered for their team (besides the boos) instead of cheering against the other team. I am proud to be a Michigan Wolverine.

While I'm not trying to condone the Wisco fans behavior as I thought that everyone that I met during the game was a complete douchebag (except for one really sweet girl who was with her friend that was just a joy to be around). The eat shit fuck you thing is something that the students do at Wisconsin. The underclassmen point at the upperclaasssmen and say "eat shit" then the upperclassmen point back and retort "fuck you". I asked how that tradition got started but no one I talked to had any idea. Needless to say when I went to Wisconsin last year I was a quiet observer besides my yelling when they were on defense. Just was letting you know that it wasn't just for them to say "eat shit fuck you" it's actually a chant there.
Lastly I'm pretty sure that they were also singing "by the light of the moon" which I also mockingly sang all day at the game too and Wisconsin fans did it with me... Good times!

It's impossible to get a bead on Wisconsin fans because there are three kinds. One is a student. These are usually pretty good. Another is like a conservative farmer sort. They love Wisconsin and will defend their Badgers to the death, but they're also quiet, cagey, and polite. They clap when Wisconsin gets first downs and don't make trouble.
The other type is from the Wisconsin fringes -- and if you give these ones too much booze they get awfully salty. Sort of like upers. These are probably the ones that were acting up at the game. A secret: they love pickled turkey gizzards, and if you give them a jar they'll quiet right down.

Wisconsin has had a reputation of having the classyist fans (in Madison or on the road) around, and my experiences correspond to that.
But I haven't witnessed the Wisconsin fan/pickled turkey gizzard thing. Thinking about that as a chaser to a gallon of beer and a tub of cheese, and my stomach, well skip it. I think I'll pass.

Two years ago, it was stories about the Wisconsin band (!) ganging up on Michigan fans on the street and trying to steal a piano from the school of music (incidentilly, I think this was also the same year that the band was put on probation for hazing or something), this year it's about disrespectful fans starting fights.
At the same time, I've heard of plenty of Badger fans complaining about Michigan fans. "Oh, they were so rude! They were actually carrying around stuffed Badgers in nooses on sticks!"
*shrug*

The worst fans at Saturday's game: Michigan fans.
While I agree with Chitownblue in that there are both good and bad fans from each school, the median fan at PSU is worse than the median fan at Wisconson. Minnisota and Iowa have noticibly good fans.
On the plus side for UofM fans, when sitting behind a group of big Iowa supporters two years ago, they all said that UofM Fans were the nicest of anywhere they'd been, and PSU had the worst.

As mentioned, the Wisconsin guys in our section were all fine. I had to restrain some old guy from telling some other old guy that Wisconsin sucked after the Thompson TD. I mean, seriously, both people in this situation looked like they could be stockbrokers. It was weird.
There was one guy who stood up excitedly every time Wisconsin did anything thrilling like roll Evridge out of the pocket. That was kind of annoying.

I learned this at the game: Drunken Wisconsin Sorority girls are equally as clueless as Drunken Michigan Sorority girls. Also, they seem not to understand the laws of physics, and tried to jam 10 girls into the equivalant of 3 seats. As an added bonus, they behave the same as well, and all left before halftime.
Also: Wisconsin fans, like fans from almost every other school are amazed when we let them tailgate and drink our alcohol without forcing them to pay money.

Also: Much fatter. Well, ALL of them were fat. Not just 70% of them like here.

all the wisconsin fans i came across were asses (except for a nice group of old mich/wisc fans tailgating next to us). ones in the student section were spitting on michigan flags and taunting as many people as would listen to them for most of the game. i made sure they got a piece of my mind when they all left early.
even ohio state last year people were generally sane. this was my worst experience with visiting fans by far
