USCHO article featuring some Hunwick praise

Submitted by lhglrkwg on

There's no Michigan hockey tonight so in order to get your hockey fix for the weekend try checking out this USCHO article which is supposed to be about multiple topics but Michigan is discussed thoroughly

He talks about Hunwick being one of the top 3 goalies in the country, talks extensively about Michigan v ND from last weekend and even mentions Bryan Hogan getting his first shutout in the CHL (Central Hockey League)

Moneyquote:

I’ve seen most if not all goalies this year in what is not a fantastic goaltending corps across the nation. My opinion, and it is just an opinion, is Hunwick is just better than everyone else out there.

Edit: Also, Hunwick is compared to Jeff Lerg but "[Hunwick] might just be a hair more athletic in the crease". Darn right

Awesome article. Also, I'll have a PWR update after the two Alaska games tonight. Some strange things right now:

MichiganHockey.net As of right now, NMU is 9th in the CCHA but 3rd in the updated Sioux Sports PairWise Rankings siouxsports.com/hockey/ranking… #assbackwards[/quote]

We have apparently jumped into #3 in the Pairwise while being 6th in the CCHA. Northern is tied with us for 3rd in the Pairwise and they are 9th(!) in the CCHA. Ohio State finally lost their 1-seed after losing another game, this time to Lake State

LSSU beats OSU 1-0, at the Sault, Ferris beats MSU 2-1 in Big Rapids, and Northern beats Miami 2-1 in Oxford (does the CCHA have anything resembling offense?!).  Not surprisingly, WMU rebounds from a sweep at Miami to beat BGSU 4-1 in Kalamazoo.  In a bit of a surprise, Alaska up 4-1 on Notre Dame in Fairbanks.

WMU becomes the team to beat, first place in the CCHA with one more point than the #2 Buckeyes (who are winless in 2012, 0-4-3, Ouch) and 2 points above #3 FSU.  With 2 games in hand on all the top 5 teams except Ferris.  4 points up with 1 game in hand on #6 Michigan.  WMU has a home and home with FSU the last week of the regular season, that could determine the CCHA champ.  Though with the standings as close as they are, the CCHA as deep as it is and 3-point games, everybody up to and including #9 NMU (8 points back tied in games played on WMU) has a shot at the regular season title and definitely a shot at the home-ice and/or first round bye, the top 4/5 finishers receive.  And with the CCHA the way it is, Michigan really would like the bye and home ice to continue it's streak of Joe Louis appearances.  Finish 5th and we could very well be playing a best of three in Oxford or Sault St. Marie.  Miami and LSSU wouldn't be easy at Yost, playing them away... Yikes!

Who would have thought that a walk-on (two if you count Janecyk's appearance this year) would have this much success at Michigan. We are typically known for our high profile goalies (ie. Montoya, Sauer, etc.) but the program is in the hands of a small time guy who's having lots of success.
