Updated: Stefon Diggs News (Not Good News)
Updated with Chris Balas tweet and Scout board link.
Stefon Diggs going to Michigan isn't going to happen.
First, here's what Diggs had to say:
“I was going to go to Michigan, but as of now, I’m not sure,” he said. “Maybe Auburn or Florida. I’ve got four left, so we’ll see how it goes.”
The deal breaker betweent the coaches and Diggs took place last weekend though. Apparently Diggs and the coaches had an arrangement for an in-home visit but Diggs took an official visit to Cal instead, without telling the coaches. So the coaches showed up while Diggs wasn't there.
This, something else, or maybe a combination have caused the coaches to make the decision to not continue recruiting Diggs. Again, it's by the choice of the coaches, not by Diggs, that he is no longer being recruited.
A lot of questions were getting asked in the other thread so I figured I'd make another thread to answer because it seems like the news would be of interest to a lot of people.
Update
A few people didn't believe me so here is what Chris Balas tweeted:

Don't expect WR Stefon Diggs at Michigan next year, but U-M will take another receiver in this class. Might find out who sooner than later.
And a link to a Scout board, skip the first one and the people fighting about spelling and you have multiple posters corroborating what I posted:

In my mind, it's different and we really don't know the story. With Brown, he was specifically told that he wasn't considered a commit if he were to visit somewhere. With Diggs, there easily could have been a mix-up. We dont know everything that happened.
December 8th, 2011 at 7:35 AM ^
just dropped him for no valid reason. I trust our coaches more than that. They haven't done anything to make me think they're unfair with kids. Quite the opposite.
December 7th, 2011 at 10:23 PM ^
On top of JR's comments, it was more than just taking a trip to Oregon. He was told that they wouldn't consider him a commit if he took trips, but if he told them that he wanted to see a few other schools and see what they had to say, then maybe the coaches would not have crossed him off completely but just considered him uncommitted. It was the underhand manner of trying to sneak a visit in against the coaches policy and now he has to deal with the consequences. If he had told Hoke, I think Hoke would have been fine, we will continue recruiting you and take your time, but no promises that a spot will be open if you decide you want to recommit. By the way, where were the parents on that one? Trying to sneak visits in? Why not just tell your kid to tell Hoke he wants to check out a few other options? Aw well.

I'm not saying these are terrible, terrible things. They are more like irresponsible teenage things, but the grades and the flakiness would give a perception of a higher-risk kid. He's probably a gamebreaker, but not worth the risk. Too many flameouts in the recent years ...

If we can't get him, and it appears that we won't, I hope he's the next Desean Jackson at Cal rather than OSU.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
If the story about him standing up our coaches on their visit is true, I think I'd like to seem him end up injecting cancer into the Ohio locker room.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:21 PM ^
Cancer? I don't think hes a cancer? He just left for his official visit. I'd like him to stay as far away as possible from Ohio.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:29 PM ^
He left for a visit when he had an in-home already scheduled with a different school without telling the people that were traveling to see him. That's problematic. Let Ohio take the guys without a general sense of responsibility, I don't care how much talent they have.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
You have Hoke on speed dial? You can't call him a cancer, if you dont know the whole story.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:53 PM ^
You must have missed the part where I said IF THE STORY WAS TRUE.
December 8th, 2011 at 7:38 AM ^
"Let Ohio take the guys without a general sense of responsibility, I don't care how much talent they have."
December 7th, 2011 at 9:45 PM ^
You scared bro?
December 7th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
I said this above, but I think its safe to assume that the visit mishap was more than a misunderstanding. If the coaches are willing to drop a kid like that off of their board after a non-visit, he definitely showed them up. If it was just a misunderstanding, they would apologize and keep recruiting him, given his talent.

I never got hope in for Diggs...I'd be cool with Chesson this year and Treadwell in 2013.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
I just hope to God that he isn't drawn in by the snake oil salesman that is Urban Meyer. I completely agree with the coaches though. If he doesn't take the time to make sure to meet with our coaches when they are in the area then he isn't interested
December 7th, 2011 at 7:09 PM ^
will paint him as the next Percy Harvin. Remember Diggs, Desmond Howard got all the hardware (Heisman, Bilitnikof, Super Bowl, SB MVP etc....) not Percy. Go Blue!!!!
December 7th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
if he were to land at tuos. Something just seems abrupt about this...similar to Dunn visiting their this weekend.
December 7th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
Fine with me, leaves us a spot open for Dorial Green-Beckham
December 7th, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
Or, "Megatron's Clone?" Let's get him! ;)
December 7th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
Thats fine by me. If he ends up at Ohio, then Yuri Wright will shut his ass down.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
I don't always talk about 17 year old boys, but when I do, I prefer michigan commits.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:58 PM ^
I was talking about Yuri Wright when he comes to mich. Im that confident he will go blue
December 7th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
You want strong character guys, and guys that want to be at Michigan. Honestly, if Diggs really wanted to be at Michigan, he could have easily given a verbal commitment already. Compromising your values to bring in a recruit because someone is a 4 or 5 star is short sighted, and simply doesn't pay off in the end. Exhibit A: TP & Ohio.
Not only am I not disappointed, I'm pleased that this came out now, and not later. Yes, Diggs is a High School student, and his head is spinning with the courting going on. But choices he makes now typically correlate and predict choices down the road. Having Michigan coaches show up and be told by someone else, "sorry, come back later, he's in California today" is absolutely inexcusable and a gross lack of respect. They wasted time and money that could have spent on another visit. If Diggs didn't appreciate that, it is his loss.
It is better to move on today than to have him accept an offer and cause problems down the road. Even worse, make a verbal commitment now and pull it on or around signing day. This is clearly a case where a "bird in the hand is worthy two in the bush." Specifically, I'd rather have Payton, or Chesson, or Madaris, or Powe, than hold out hope for Diggs and have him go down in flames.
This is Michigan, for God's sake. Some of these guys need to shit or get off the pot. Diggs will not make or break this class. We can take four more at most, and from the post with Recruit decision dates there are at least 11 solid recruits still in the mix, most ranked with 4 or 5 stars. It is getting to be the time to stop saving room on the bus. Hoke and Mattison know what they are doing, and this is shaping up as the greatest recruiting class in years.
December 7th, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
It takes more than being able to run fast, tackle, or jump high to be a Michigan Wolverine, and I want to see us keep it that way. Let's hope he learns a lesson from this, and let others see what we have done and know that we don't tolerate that kind of stuff. Let him go to the SEC!
December 7th, 2011 at 7:01 PM ^
Hoke, when asked the reason for the success of this year's team said: "They like each other."
Therefore, when a player displays a selfish lack of common courtesy---not showing for a prearranged and agreed-upon visit--that failure should raise questions about how much this players' teammates will like him. It should raise questions about whether the player will contribute to the common good of the team. No matter how many stars a player has, star ratings are unreliable, and, in the end, he may end up subtracting more than he adds to the team.
Hoke, as a disciple of Bo, certainly recognizes what is most important to success::
"The team. The team. The team."
December 7th, 2011 at 8:52 PM ^
that Richrod brought in some really solid guys, and kept some really solid Lloyd guys around. Not trying to start a Richrod discussion, just cool that the team seems so down to earth despite all the crap they've been through
December 7th, 2011 at 9:28 PM ^
He also brought in a bunch of guys who bailed on the program.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
Not trying to hijack, but with all the talk about Chesson committing soon, does that mean we've cooled on Payton?
December 7th, 2011 at 7:48 PM ^
He seems like he wants to take his time with his decision. I don't think that we have cooled on him, but the question is if there will be a spot once he does decide.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
We don't want Diggs anyways!
/reverse psychology.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
Actually, the pschology term "cognitive dissonance" is what you're going for here. Think of the fable of "sour grapes."

December 7th, 2011 at 7:24 PM ^
If you are interested in Michigan, you better walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Cliche, I know, but it's obviously the rule now based off this and Pharoh Brown's visit to Oregon.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:24 PM ^
Sucks. He would've been a Watkins like game changer, but with AD already in the fold and Chesson (a big target for odds are Gardner and then Morris) odds are coming in, I'm not too beat up about this.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:32 PM ^
I'm disappointed If we really don't have a chance anymore, no matter who's decision it is to end it.
December 7th, 2011 at 7:57 PM ^
how is it not Diggs' decision, when he knew the coaches were coming to his home, but decided to visit another school?
December 7th, 2011 at 8:07 PM ^
He blew it...
December 7th, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
I doubt he's losing any sleep over it. It's not like Michigan was one of his top three finalists. The kid still seems interested in a bunch of schools.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
Gives new meaning to the old adage "Those who stay will be champions..."
December 8th, 2011 at 8:00 AM ^
Like, "Those who show up to begin with..."
December 7th, 2011 at 8:19 PM ^
"As far as Michigan's interest, it's a business and they had some concerns about me academically," Diggs admitted.
I want to . . . make sure there are certain things in place for me to succeed in school. I like people staying on top of me and that kind of thing. I know it's college, but I need a little extra help sometimes here and there."

This was early in the recruiting process. Diggs had turned things around as the year went on.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:20 PM ^
Obviously he's a markie name, but if the ship has sailed in the fashion it has it makes sense to move on. Just don't go to Ohio!!!!!!FFS.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:33 PM ^
Odds are we'll never know about what happened with the coaches visit or that we'll ever know who cooled on who. By all accounts Diggs is supposed to be a good kid, which is probably at least in some small part why we were interested.
If it hasn't or doesn't work out, it's okay. We'll pick up another recruit. This recruit may not be as highly ranked. This recruit may turn out to be a first rounder at some point. This recruit might not pan out...........we don't know.
For now, I'll keep trusting the coaches and wish young Mr. Diggs all the best with his future.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:43 PM ^
I'm kind of embarrassed by the kid's flaking out on the coaches if that's true.
December 7th, 2011 at 8:53 PM ^
To answer all the #Michigan fans about Diggs, they are still in it, he hasn't really eliminated any of his 9 or so yet
December 7th, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
It seems logical that someone from the Michigan football dept. would have made contact with Diggs in the week prior to confirm the visit at his house. It would be surprising if that confirmation was not made in a short advance, and if so, then its a pretty big diss to go on a visit without telling who you know is coming in.

December 7th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
We don't know if this is 100% true. I'm not going to crucify this kid without knowing for sure.

To me, it sure seems like they're trying to fill spots ASAP and looking for recruits who aren't looking to take visits/decide closer to signing day.

They were all about McNamara, he didn't come right away so they were on the PA tight end. He didn't come, so they offered Grant from Kalis' school.

Personally, I'd like to see a fight for some top guys until the end with these last 4 spots. This is Michigan, we can get a Big East bound 3* TE whenever we want.
December 7th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
on this site, at least. We're classy!
