Update: New Red Wings arena to be called Little Caesars Arena

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

In a shocker, the new Red Wings arena will be called Little Caesars Arena. I don't think anyone saw that coming.

Now it needs a nickname - Pizzarena? You heard it here first. TM/Copyright/Patent Ypsituckyboy 2016.

Not surprising. The days of pro venues being anything but named after corporations are long gone. Once The Palace goes, I'd expect the pistons to move to this place.

This arena will host NCAA First & Second Round games in 2018.

You can probably chalk it up for a Sweet Sixteen/Elite Eight some day since they moved those regional finals back into arenas.

The Frozen Four will no doubt be there some day.

NHL ASG, NHL draft, etc..

Thought I just heard somewhere that Madison Square Garden is the only NHL arena without a corporate sponsor.  Just a fact of where we are today.  Build a stadium, it gets sponsored.

No way they'd leave an already paid for arena.  But expect a 10-15 game swap with the Wings though.  DRW will play 10-15 games at the Palace and the Pistons will play 10-15 games at LCA.  All home playoff games will stay at their regular venue.

Also -- If the Gores/Gilbert soccer arena happens, don't be surprised if the Pistons and Cavs play an outdoor game there, or indoor if they add a retractable roof.

The Wings will never play at the Palace especially not with a brand new arena where Ilitch controls 100% of the profits (don't forget all the parking revenues). They have season ticket holders from Windsor who will never drive all the way up there. When the new arena was in the planning stages, Olympia sent out a survey asking people if they would attend Wings games at the Palace (this was when Ilitch was thinking about buying the Pistons) and a strong majority said no.

Should name it Palatine Hill. The center hill of the 7 hills of Rome where the ceasars resided.

Worst part is the LED roof originally planned for the arena is now scrapped, to be replaced with "the world's largest Little Caesars image."

Yep. The roof will be a Little Caesars logo.

I can't even.

"Besides unveiling the name for the arena, Ilitch also unveiled a new logo, a swirling circular image that will adorn the roof of the new arena as well as all marketing materials."

Also, apparently the LED technology would have been prohibitively heavy to go on the roof? Still incredibly stupid they're going with the United Center route and putting the freaking company logo on the roof.

They're now called "College Hockey at the Joe".

"College Hockey at the..."   How to you shorten Little Caesar's to one syllable?

Hey All,

Had to start up my account just to post this out here:  I've always found the increasing corporate presence in pro sports to be sad and dehumanizing. Especially when teams are given substantial public funds for the purpose of private profit, it grates me that our meeting places have names like "Little Caesar's Arena" instead of something representing the spirit of the community. To that end, I've started a petition with the goal of having Olympia Entertainment reconsider the name of this stadium.

If you feel like I do, please sign the linked petition and SHARE with those who might be interested.

Thanks, and Go Blue!

There is a really easy solution for everyone complaining about this. Become a billionaire, buy your own franchise (or two), and name your stadium whatever you want. Illitch is doing the opposite of selling out. Instead of selling the naming rights to the highest bidder, he's using his own brand. I see nothing wrong with it.
