Oregon lost big and will fall way down. Sparty falls out of the Top 10. What to do with Cincinnati. What will the CFP committee do this week is the question.

I'm thinking #3 vs #5 for The Game.

It'll either be 3 vs 5 or 2 vs 5. Cincinnati plays ECU this week and it won't be a cakewalk for them.

I'm thinking the rankings will be

1. Georgia

2. Alabama(2 and 3 could switch)

3. OSU

4. Cincinnati

5. Michigan

6. ND

7. Okla St.

8. Ole Miss

9.Baylor

10. Oklahoma

It'll be really interesting to see where we are at this time next week. Auburn isn't a free win for Alabama. Cincinnati and ECU could be a tough game. Obviously OSU-UM. Oklahoma st and Oklahoma, and the winner of that could shoot up the rankings. Ole Miss is playing a GOOD MIssissippi State. It's going to be a great weekend of Football.

That there is the problem with Cincinnati being in the conversation.  They had one upper echelon game this season, @ND, two months ago.  Basically they get Big Ten and ACC non-conference warm up games all season and want to have their second true test be a playoff game. Say what you will about ND, but at least they play P5 teams.  Look at some of the great seasons Michigan, OSU, Bama, and others have had.  They may beat all their rivals, but they slip up against an Iowa, a Purdue, or a Texas A&M.  Cinci doesn't have to do that every year.  Hell they don't even play OSU every year, despite their proximity to one another.

That would be a fun 8 - or even 6 - team playoff.

8 team playoff would be:

  • 8 Ole Miss vs 1 UGA
  • 7 Okie St vs 2 Alabama
  • 6 notre dame vs 3 osu (meteor game, anyone?)
  • 5 Michigan vs 4 Cincinnati (high confidence in this game)

Next round would likely be:

  • UGA vs Michigan
  • Bama vs osu

A 6 team bracket would be just give UGA and Bama byes and play the existing 6-3 and 5-4 matchups above.

Staee #13 a spot behind Iowa.   If that holds with the committee it could cost StAEE a spot in the new year’s six bowls.    We must avoid a similar fate next week.

I think we jump Cincinnati in the playoff rankings. That way it will be a top four match up, the committee knows damn well the loser of that game will drop out and Cincinnati will jump back up.

It's all pretty irrelevant.  If we beat OSU and win the Big Ten Title game, we are for sure in.  If we lose either we are out.  Pretty simple.

I suppose there is some crazy scenario where we beat OSU, lose the Big Ten Title game by 2 points and somehow still sneak into the playoff, but I doubt it.

Notre Dame has 3 point wins over two teams with losing records (FSU, VT) and another 3 point win over 6 & 5 Toledo, and lost to Cincinnati 24-13 at home.   While college football is up and down, Notre Dame pretty overrated at No. 5 this late in season.  Agree not that relevant, though it is interesting.

Beat OSU.

I think that the Wolverines would beat Notre Dame and Cincinnati.

But rankings right now don't matter all that much.  All of it depends on the coming games.

If I was forced to bet the farm on the committee's ranking this week I would say #1 GA, #2 OSU, #3 AL and #4 MI. And contrary to popular belief, the final tally may have it just this way too. There has been nothing definitive to indicate that, at his time, these are not the four best teams in the country-and that is the committee's task. If Michigan and AL requite themselves well, even in a loss to their conference counterpart, the committee may decide that it is most unfair to have the top four teams eliminate each other from a shot at the NC before the CFP is even played. This is what you get with a four team playoff.

Folks can complain about the committee all they want but they are light years ahead of the people who vote in the AP and Coaches' polls.
