UM/PSU NOT a Night Game

The gentleman that covers Iowa football for The Athletic just tweeted that no B1G games on Nov 13 are scheduled to air in primetime, networks and times are still up in the air, but no night games that weekend.

But for some reason Michigan/Indiana had to be a night game. Which, speaking of, heard Seth say at the end of the podcast that he was getting cc'd in several emails to the athletic department about that game. Does that mean the masses are sending their displeasure about the start time? That's what I took it as.

I think both teams have to agree to do a night game at this point in the season in the B1G, and there's zero chance of Michigan agreeing to a White Out game on purpose. Similarly I assume Minnesota got asked about playing a night game at Kinnick and said "no, are you kidding even asking that question?"

Good. Now why tf is UM/IU a night game? On FOX too. If you did sit-ups during every commercial break during one of their telecasts, you'd have a six-pack by the 3rd quarter.

Michigan fans are part of the problem of the football program.

One of my good buddies works for Notre Dame.  They had a night game last week against a completely average UNC team and he said the place was bumping.  Fans were excited for the atmosphere and it showed on the field.

Meanwhile, Michigan fans are writing to the AD because they want a noon game so they can get home early and what, nap?  Why are you a fan if you can tailgate a go to a night game!?  Are all Michigan fans 60 and older?

If you have a problem with a night game, send tickets my way.

Yes, I am older than 60.  I have had my season tickets since I was a freshman in 1970.  That does not mean I am a cripple, or obsolete or unworthy of consideration.

Are you going to the game?  I would guess not.  Night games are a wonderful atmosphere for big games, the place was rocking for Washington.  Of course that was the second Saturday in September.

But after the game is a royal pain in the ass.  I live in the north side of Ann Arbor, less than 8 miles away, it took me 90 minutes to drive home!  For the Washington game it was probably worth it.  For 2-6 Indiana it is definitely not.  The high on Saturday is 49, the low is 31.  It's going to be cold sitting there for 4+ hours while Fox runs more ads.

I am furious about the outcome of the Staee game, but I am even madder that there are putting this nothing game at night.

Agreed, I don't understand the aversion to night games.

Tailgating for night games is fantastic, the atmosphere is through the roof, it's always great for recruiting, and in this case I think it helps avoid the let down by providing a big game feel.

In terms of what's best for the Michigan Football program, I don't really see a downside.

The TV networks put every single conference game on a 6-day hold in terms of their start time.

Every.  Single.  Conference.  Game.

Just ridiculous.  I mean, U-M @ PSU, fine, that game will at least get some ratings.  But they also did it for the likes of Rutgers @ Indiana and Northwestern @ Wisconsin.

About as fan-unfriendly as it gets.

On another board, a guy who's knowledgeable about TV contracts explained that the deadline for the networks to impose a night game without consent of both teams is now the end of Daylight Saving Time.  Hence, this weekend was the last chance for the networks to impose a night game on U-M.

I have no way of verifying this guy's knowledge, but he has been right in the past.

JagsFan93 (if we're talking about the same board) is a legend in his own mind.  But I think he's also right on this one.

On another topic, since this is THE weekend, I wish we could reform daylight savings time, so only the western portions of a time zone went back to Standard Time for the November-February period.  I'm not looking forward to the imminent 4:30 PM sunsets of eastern Colorado.  Yeesh.

  • Young players get psyched for night games. They're young, most of them played HS football at night.
  • Fans love or hate them depending on where they live and are staying, drinking and tailgating preferences, and weather probably most of all.
  • Coaches hate them because you've got a whole day of expending nervous energy waiting for the game to begin, not much you can do because it's too late to add anything; then you don't get home till late. They love noon games, because it means they can spend a few hours with family or friends or relax and then maybe even get a head start on the next game.

Considering that the last time Michigan won a football game at Penn State (2015) it was a day game, I fully endorse this development.

In the meantime, Go Terps.

I will be interested to see the game time.  The basketball team has a game that night in DC, which I was considering attending since that is nearby for me.  It doesn't look like that many tickets have been sold.  I suspect that there would be more local alum attending the basketball game if not for this potential conflict with the football game.
