If I am not mistaken, this list correlates reasonably well to the top schools when it comes to merchandise sales as well (not precisely, of course). Notre Dame is not first in that regard, but I believe it is probably top five, for example.

Nobody I know likes Ohio.

Amazing that no one you know likes Ohio considering it's likely a microcosm of college football fandom...

Shut your mouth RIGHT NOW. NOW.

...They're always going to be America's Team"
This horseshit assertion is one big reason why I've always hated Dallas and ND. The ego is just out of control.

The Dallas Cowboys are America's team because Jerry Jones markets them as such; at least with ND they have a pretty storied history and some cultural cache. The Cowboys are a very good football team, but I mean the NY Yankees have far more storied of a history across all sports, and in football I'd argue Pittsburgh and San Fran has been at least as successful for longer.

The Cowboys were labelled america's team back in the 70's with Roger Staubach at QB. Growing up a Rams fan I hated them. On a different note, it was tough to root for the Lions even back then...
Go Tigers!
Go Blue!

I would have thought mid-70s myself.

Adidas would disagree by paying out almost 20 million more to UM for sporting their gear. Most in the nation.

They have more random fans all over the country than any other team I've seen, save maybe Alabama. I rarely run into Michigan fans frankly

Baton Rouge or similar. I see Michigan gear all over the country.

Not only have I have seen it all over the country...but I have taken pictures of people that I have come across in my travels (all over the world) sporting M gear. I remember being in the airport in Caracas, Venezuela during the Fab Five era and they were selling M shirts and ball caps - they had a nice display at the front of the shop.

Spotted Michigan gear in Australia on a couple separate occasions. Boy do they enjoy sports down there.

I grew up in New England (the hot bed of college football!!!)...not Irish, but as a Catholic ND was our team. My spouse is an alum (UM) and so i switched my allegiance. It took a while, but I managed to convert my dad and brother (both of whom still lived in NE).

This is on WikiAnswers. I thought MNF was the first place I had heard the term, but they credit the NFL.
NFL Films was preparing the team's 1978 season recap and the producers found that the Cowboys had strong fan bases throughout the US; it was thus decided to title the 1978 season film America' Team. The name has stuck ever since.

a smiliar poll in the early 90's like this and the results were the same, shows tradition is worh alot of coin.

1) I would be interested in having the same poll ask "most hated" as well. The difference between loved and hated would be quite different I imagine. For example, I bet Wisky would be at the top, given all the hate for ND, UM, OSU, etc.
2) It's pretty impressive that UM and UT are so high given that 1/2 (40% at least) of their own state can't stand them.
